AfricaBrass Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 I just received my first Mosaic sets after a two year hiatus. Wow, I forgot how much fun these things are! The excited feeling when the box arrives, the fun of opening it up, pulling out the bubble wrap, opening the set, checking the booklet for the number, putting the first disc on, reading the notes. I think I'd rather skip buying individual CDs and just put my money into the box sets. Argh! I'm hooked. I need to find a Mosaic 12-step group. Quote
wesbed Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 What's the old saying? The best remedy for a hangover is more alcohol? Forget the 12-step program. Buy more Mosaics! Quote
Eric Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 Funny, I just went through a similar experience. Just received the Mulligan and Elvin Jones sets after going a few years without. They really are a treat. For me, these two sets were a bit of a gamble, but as usual, the Mosaic guys know quality stuff and I am loving them. I've been buying about one a year since 1985 ... once an addict, always an addict Eric Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 26, 2004 Author Report Posted March 26, 2004 Life's too short to be on the wagon anyway. Quote
mgraham333 Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 ...Just received the Mulligan and Elvin Jones sets after going a few years without... Eric: I'd really love to hear your take on the Elvin Jones set. That's one of the bigger sets I've been thinking about for a while. I've probably listened to the song samples on the Mosaic site (especially For All The Other Times) a hundred times. Quote
BruceH Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 (edited) What sets did you get Africa? Edited March 29, 2004 by BruceH Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 29, 2004 Author Report Posted March 29, 2004 Bruce, thanks for asking! I picked up the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh and the Capitol set. I ordered them Monday and they arrived on Thursday. I spent the whole weekend listening to them. I then lost control and on Friday, ordered the New Orleans and the HRS sets. I also ordered my first Selects: Carmell Jones, Curtis Amy, Randy Weston, and Bob Brookmeyer. I really am done for a while. Quote
couw Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 ouch! have fun Jeff, welcome back in spending land... Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 29, 2004 Author Report Posted March 29, 2004 Thanks John! More like, welcome back to debt land. It's funny, I had almost talked myself out of being a jazz fanatic. I got so tired of always trying to dig up cash to buy more, that it lost the fun. So, I've tried not to listen to much jazz and put my focus elsewhere. But as soon as I put some Lee Konitz on, I remembered why I used to spend all my extra money on jazz. Last night, I was listening to the Andrew Hill Mosaic set and I just re-fell in love with the music. Quote

So... by not purchasing so much jazz, you were able to save money... errr... which is now burning a hole in your bank account till you buy some more jazz? Just keep buying the jazz, you actually stay ahead that way... uhhh, somehow... maybe. Quote
BruceH Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Hoo-boy! Good choices, man!! It must be a listenin' festival at your house! I think you're gonna like those Selects. Quote
vajerzy Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 The Capitol set is one of my favorites! After buying that one- the others don't look so expensive..... Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 29, 2004 Author Report Posted March 29, 2004 Thanks Bruce! It was great this weekend. My son and I had a great time listening to these sets. vajerzy, That Capitol set does make the other sets seem cheap! I think I was blinded by that. I almost ordered the Stitt set too. Quote
Sundog Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 I was blinded by that. I almost ordered the Stitt set too. Go for it! His take on Harlem Nocturne is alone worth the price of this wonderful set. Quote
BruceH Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 Let us know what you think of the Brookmeyer! (Been thinking of pulling the trigger on that.) Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 30, 2004 Author Report Posted March 30, 2004 Let us know what you think of the Brookmeyer! (Been thinking of pulling the trigger on that.) I'll do that. I wish I could have gone for the Stitt, Sundog. It will be mine! Muhaha!!! Quote
