ghost of miles Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Bought yesterday and today: Woody Shaw, MASTER OF THE ART. Don Ellis, TEARS OF JOY. Also the all-jazz issue of Wax Poetics, which I heartily recommend--esp. to those who dig CTI sides at all (good piece on Creed Taylor in there). Quote

jeffcrom Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 I'm in my favorite city, so I went to the Louisiana Music Factory yesterday and spent a couple of hours going through their 78s. The real finds where three unreissued records (two Charlie Thompsons and a Wooden Joe Nicholas) on Bill Russell's American Music label. (Well, the Wooden Joe did come out on a bootleg album.) Quote
Jimmer Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 (edited) A couple of days ago I bought a new copy of Stitt's Givin' Away The Store from my local, independent music store and ordered more Stitt - Stitt Meets Brother Jack - and an Ammons - Funky. Edited April 11, 2009 by Jimmer Quote

This is a fantastic sax trio live recording featuring Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass and John Betsch on drums. They were at the top of their game. BruceH Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 The Very Best of Booker T. & the MG's (Rhino CD) Was going to get that 3-CD set from Newbury for $13.99 when I read a customer review that said the version of "Time Is Tight" on there was a very different alternate. Saw this at Amoeba for less and realized it has all the tracks I really want or need by them. Quote

BruceH Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 The Exciters---Tell Him (Collectables) A rather unfairly overlooked girl group. The lead singer, Brenda Reid, has a huge voice and sings her ass off. Also, their version of "Do-Wah-Diddy" (which predates the Manfred Mann) is fantastic. Quote
