BillF Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I bought Battle Stations and Zoot Sims And The Gershwin Brothers today. I've been wanting to explore "Jaws" and Zoot, and these sounded excellent from the samples I've heard. I'm expecting that these will help put my vacation into full swing! Fine albums both! Money well spent! Quote

BillF Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) Eastern Rebellion 2 (Timeless) Cedar Walton, Bob Berg, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins in 1977. Edited July 6, 2009 by BillF Quote
sidewinder Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Eastern Rebellion 2 (Timeless) Cedar Walton, Bob Berg, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins in 1977. Yeah - great band. I saw them around the time that 'EB II' came out - Berg had just replaced George Coleman on tenor. Vol 3 is the only one I am missing on vinyl. Anyone got a spare Timeless pressing? Quote

Bought (and still have, of course) the first vol after Humphrey Lyttelton played a track from what was then a newly released LP on his Monday evening show. Only came to hear some of Vol 2 recently, courtesy last.fm. Now quite an obscure item, search engines tending to say "Do you mean Easter Rebellion?" First tried to buy the CD via US amazon, but the supplier canceled as unobtainable. Finally got it (quite cheaply, actually) from a Swiss supplier, via the French site priceminister. Now playing: great stuff - worth all the hassle! Quote

That I don't recall, but Lyttelton also featured at about that time a track from George Coleman's Amsterdam After Dark, also on Timeless, which sent me out to buy another album which I still enjoy. Yeah, I saw George's band on the tour when that one came out too - with Hilton Ruiz on piano, Herbie lewis on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Bought the LP pronto after hearing them. George was in magnificent form that tour. The next visit he did to Scotts, he brought his Octet ! Quote

Once again, it was Lyttelton's selection of a track from the Octet's album Big George (Affinity) that led me to put it on my wants list, where it remained for many years until I found a discarded record library copy fairly recently in Manchester's Vinyl Exchange. Looking forward to hearing them. Did you have any trouble adding to your order? No, I had no problems finding additional CDs to add to my order! Actually, I placed my initial order online July 5th. On the morning of the 7th I called customer service directly to see if I could add to my initial order. I thought I'd give it a shot but I had already resigned myself to placing a 2nd order if they said no. The call was kind of weird. At first the rep shot me down saying it couldn't be done because I placed the initial order online and now I was calling in. I said, "OK" and then she told me to wait while she checked on something. She then shot me down again saying it wasn't in a place where she could add on to it. I said, "OK" and then she asked me to wait again while she checked on something. She then came back on and said that she would be able to add onto the order. I gave her the titles, she confirmed what I gave her, she gave me a new total and said it would be under the same order number. Now I'll have to wait and see what happens because orders that are called in apparently don't show online. I don't see that they've charged my bank card anything yet and the site shows my order is still processing. Quote
papsrus Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 (edited) A Pete La Roca rec from save, and also, I really dug Elmo Hope's Trio and Quintet, so I went noodling around for a couple of the sidemen, searched the recs threads here, and came up with a couple of discs featuring Harold Land that I'm pretty excited about. Pete La Roca -- "Basra" Harold Land -- "The Fox" Curtis Counce -- "Complete Studio Recordings: The Master Takes" Edited July 12, 2009 by papsrus Quote

The Fox is a masterpiece, of course. All you need now is Harold in the Land of Jazz! The "Complete" is a Gambit. I was originally looking at "Carl's Blues" (ojc) but "Complete" included the tracks on that title, and I wanted to cut a fairly wide swath as a way of introduction. I have put "In the Land of Jazz" on my save-for-later list, thanks. imho the next elmo hope you need is home-coming (which is also on the all-star sessions twofer but without alternate takes and with one master take exchanged for a slightly shorter alternate... excellent cd anyway) Thank you for recommending that one! king ubu Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Spent the past two weeks in Budapest - great city! Not much jazz though, and CDs as overprized as elsewhere in ole yurp (that is, in the real, offline, world). Scored lucky though and found the Ellington 40CD box for roughly 65€ (new and sealed): Also picked up these three: Attila Zoller - The Horizon Beyond (w/Don Friedman, Barre Philips, Daniel Humair - Act CD reissue, rather pricey...) Ted Curson - Plenty of Horn (Fresh Sound) Bobby Hutcherson - Montara (Blue Note) Quote
