Aaahhh ... different "strokes" indeed, then.  And me was thinking that all these "different" comparisons might just as much sum up the differences in approach by the Ellington band vs the Basie band.

Pity this name did not come up many years ago here. It might have been interesting to see if Chris Albertson might have had something to say about a comparison between Fred Guy and Elmer Snowden.

Recent events have directed me back into (very) early Ellington. The way that Fred Guy hooks up with Wellman Braud and Sonny Greer is damn near rambunctious!

I'm also imagining how people (civilians and showgirls alike) would be dancing to this, and that really brings the rambunctiousness into a more vivid relief.

Will have to dig out certain LPs from my stack of early Ellingtons, I guess ... (Upo to ca. 1930 they are filed in the "Classic Jazz" corner).

I got hooked on the Ellington In Order (via Spotify) and finally bought the 3 CD Decca set.

Maybe I'm just in the mood for it now, but these things are really tickling my fancy as far as feeling movement.  Love it when that happens!

In his autobiography Barney Bigard explained that during his time with the Ellington organization he listened to the Fred Guy rather than Duke as Duke would utilize notes that would confuse Mr. Bigard.

Mr. Guy had great time, razor sharp. Seems he never recorded outside the world of Ellingtonia.
