Hardbopjazz Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 Which Jazz artists that have had success crossing over? It think it would have to be George Benson. Any others come to mind? Quote
jazzbo Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 I'll start off with Nat Cole and Stan Getz. Quote

PHILLYQ Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 Oddly,as I remember it, Cannonball had a top forty hit with 'Mercy,Mercy Mercy' Quote
BruceH Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 That "Bob Edwards" guy has put a whole new spin on the term. Quote
Pete C Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Oddly,as I remember it, Cannonball had a top forty hit with 'Mercy,Mercy Mercy' Absoulutely. Eddie Harris's "Exodus" was a hit single, but I don't know if it made top 40. Hugh Masakela's "Grazin' in the Grass" certainly did. But by crossing over do we mean changing general direction, as with Benson & Cole, or just having jazz hits? I think it's a different thing with singers, but sarah Vaughan & Dinah Washington were always simultaneously doing jazz and pop sides. Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 John Scofield has successfully crossed over in recent years, as has Karl Denson. Not into the wild world of Pop 40, but popularity beyond jazz. Quote
