I did countless membership rounds with them and BMG in both my vinyl and CD days.  You could do well as long as you sent back your selection cards and you quit as soon as you fulfilled your obligation, then start all over again once they had enough new titles of interest.  There was a good Coen Brothers movie, A Serious Man (one of their best), which had a hilarious subplot about Columbia House.

I never partook (I did the Jazz Heritage club for a time though). Definitely surprised that they existed this long.

I joined in 1959.  Amongst the first records I got were KOB, Ellington Indigos and JJ Johnson's Blue Trombone none of which I would have known about otherwise.

I also got KOB through Columbia House -- but it was about 30 years later and the format was CD rather than vinyl.    

I also got Ellington at Newport and Erroll Garner's Concert by the Sea -- along with some others that I don't remember.

I joined right after my 21st birthday, because my parents bought me a CD player.
