John Tapscott Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 I just received the new Jim Rotondi "The Pleasure Dome" CD on Sharp Nine. This is a very nice CD, beautifully played and recorded, and it's only my second CD on this label (the other being The Classic Trio Meets Eric Alexander). I'm very impressed with what I've heard so far and want to check out some more Cd's on this label. What are some of your favorites? Quote
marcoliv Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 John, i have already mentioned this label as one of my favorites nowadays my recs: Louis Hayes - Louis At Large David Hazeltine - The Classic Trio Buddy Montgomery - Here Again Ray Appleton - Killer Ray Rides Again One For All releases Marcus Oliveira Quote
Uncle Skid Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Enthusiastic second for Hazeltine's "The Classic Trio"; also, I really enjoy "Manhattan Autumn", which also features Eric Alexander. Quote
Eric Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 There are really no turds in the bowl ... although there is nothing too adventurous either. Just like they say (I think) "straight ahead and in the pocket". Eric Quote
jlhoots Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Don't overlook Brian Lynch. The new one with Charlap is very nice Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Speaking of Lynch, Tribute to the Trumpet Masters is very nice. Quote
GA Russell Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 I like Dena DeRose's first album for them, which I think was called Introducing... (I'll have to look it up!). Quote
Bright Moments Posted January 21, 2006 Report Posted January 21, 2006 (edited) I like Dena DeRose's first album for them, which I think was called Introducing... (I'll have to look it up!). it is this one and i really enjoyed it as well! Edited January 21, 2006 by Bright Moments Quote
montg Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 (edited) I've also been interested in some things on this label, though I haven't picked any up yet. The samples I've heard from the Anthony Wonsey (The Thang), Eddie Henderson (Reemergence), and Julius Tolentino CDs ("Just the Beginning") all sound promising. Any comments on those? John Tapscott Posted January 26, 2006 Author Report Posted January 26, 2006 I just got "The Thang" and I think it's a really fine CD, one of the best Sharp 9's I have. A little better, I think, than the earlier Wonsey Sharp 9 CD (which is pretty good, though). I also have the Tolentino - it 's a fine CD, too. I think you'd be pleased with that one. I don't have the Henderson, but Sharp 9 releases are quite consistently good. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 I heard the clips from "The Thang" and thought they sounded pretty good, too. Thanks for the nudge, John. Quote
montg Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 (edited) Thanks John. The band on the Tolentino CD looks really good--Jeremy Pelt, Vincente Archer, Willie Jones etc..that's the first thing that caught my eye. Edited January 26, 2006 by montg Quote
