  1. you might consider resisting the temptation to accent the beginning of every eight phrase. just a little friendly advise from an old drummer. best of luck! Everybody is a critic..
  2. These are the guys I played in Spain with in February. This quartet is now my favorite project. We are also the backup band for Claudia Schmidt, a Joni Mitchell style singer/song writer. I'm excited about the potential with this ensemble! Check out the video and help us come up with a name.. ;-)
  3. Not long now before we hit the million mark! Let's get busy folks..
  4. Great! Hope you enjoy and share the music with many Deutschlanders
  5. Rest assured we're not parting ways. Typically in this business tour offers and other music projects occasionally come along and are going to keep some of us busy from now until the fall months..
  6. Randy's killin it on the whole disc! Awesome mix and sound for a live disc, great job all around. Muchas gracias..
  7. Studio sessions seldom if ever capture the fire and spontaneity of the music. I've always looked at studio recordings basically as a necessary demo, a way for the artists or bands to get their music out for exposure, sale, and airplay, but mainly as a means to get gigs at live music venues and festivals. The live performance is where the musicians really get inside the tunes and is when solos really develop and stretch.. It's always interesting to go back to the studio versions and listen to all the changes.
  8. Miles Davis believed that the best recordings were the ones where you wrote the music, played it in clubs and concerts for awhile, then after playing the tunes like wearing shoes until they're broken in, you go into the studio and record it. Too often music gets written and is recorded before it has a chance to really be learned and developed. My 2 favorite albums are our first one and this live one because the spontaneity is there. The tunes we recorded on Waiting For The Boogaloo Sisters was almost for me like playing live because we had played regularly at Founders and other places, and had developed the material. Decoder is still my best solo work on our albums.
  9. Yeah Terri! By the way, Bud Spangler says "Hi".. He's a dear old friend..
  10. Most likely will be dining with the production folks and almost all locals and of course the band mates.. Plan to wander a little by myself.. What's the crime situation there? Pick pockets and scammers a problem?
  11. Thanks for all the info BW.. All expenses are covered by the festival..
  12. I'm going to be there February 2nd through the 14th for a classic films festival actually starting Feb 5th - 13th and will be playing a tribute of 18 uniquely arranged tunes from films of the 30's and 40's along with cued scenes on a big screen above and behind us from Bogart films such as Night In Casablanca, Key Largo, African Queen, as well as other known classics like the Thief Of Baghdad. The band, "Retroback Sextet" (and all good jazz players) is guitar, mandolin, acoustic bass, cello, myself on drums & harmonica, and a killin' vocalist from Florence, Italy who's really into Johnny Hartman and Tom Waits.. If you live near Granada or have been there I'd like to get a beforehand idea of what it's like and what you think I should check out while I'm there. Food and restaurants? Climate in February? Places of interest?
  13. Here's an article explaining the event. Juniper Bear was a cutting edge fusion band in the mid-70's around Grand Rapids and Turning Point was a band I played in during the early to mid- 80's.. Show is at Wealthy Theater this Saturday starting at 7 pm.. If you're in the West Michigan area this weekend try and make it.. Gonna be BIG FUN! http://www.mlive.com/entertainment/grand-r..._point_reu.html
