  1. shrugs, Sent you a pm about the Tina Brooks and the Louis Smith. Thanks
  2. Very Good.......Very Good....LOL
  3. Jazzbo, Went to this one last night and enjoyed it very much. I had read the book a number of years ago and felt the book, unlike the movie, emphasized his journey home as much as the love story. Still I thought the movie was very well done. I really liked Rene Zellwenger. Thought she did a wounderful job. She may have been a little over the top, but overall I think it is one of the best things I have seen her in, including Chicago. The acting in the movie was wonderful. Nicole Kidman has become the standard bearer of her generation. She is spctacular. Her ability to convey emotions is unmatched. IMHO. I can't recall the name of the actor who played the sinful preacher, but he is THE new character actor of his generation. I have been impressed by his talents in everything I have seen him in. He is almost always in the supporting role, but he is really strong in those rolls. Jude Law was slightly disappointing I thought. His performance was nonetheless excellent in its own regard. IMO he was slightly outmatched by the other actors in the movie, but that is only because the other actors were so good. I would be interested to hear what others thought about this one.
  4. Sometimes regular rubbing alcohol will work. If not, lighter fluid on cotton cloth usually does the trick. May leave a slight residue. Remove the remainder with soap and water or the alcohol. Good luck
  5. My Webpage Just think, the Seller is one of our very own!!! Go gregpuck In all fairness, I think he offered it here first for considerably less. I know because I missed it. Still do not know what to think about the sound on this one. Many differing opinions.........
  6. Welcome agriffith, Great to have you aboard! I remember your contribution to the old BNBB. I look forward to your input on this board. I really cannot add to your list . I would definitly second A.T., Louis Hayes, Joe Chambers, and Albert "Tootie" Heath. Some of my favorites.
  7. I wouldn't think of getting in the middle of this one But there is a wide variance in what people think of the Grachen Select. I have almost purchased this a couple of times, but everytime I get ready to I read another thread about the sound quality of the Select. How about other folks who have purchased this set. Any comments? And don't be shy, we have sent Stefan and Claude to their respective corners to cool down! We jazz fans sure do take this stuff seriously............
  8. Have to agree with Upright Bill. I have a preference for the upright bass. I understand the use of the electric, which I can tolerate as long as the player can refrain from(which few can) slapping the strings and adding funk into the solo. Just ruins it for me. Even if it is but a note or two, it just seems so out of place. He might as well misplaced the note altogether. My two cents FWIW.
  9. I agree with Claude about Jackie McLean on this one. In some ways it is almost his session. In fact I recently picked this one up myself. In the $8 range. I had been looking for it for a long time. After a number of listens, I got in the mood for some more Jackie and picked up New Soil. New Soil was recorded in May 1959 and Fuego in Oct. 1959. Byrd and Mclean are featured on both. I was thinking at the time that maybe they should have made Byrd leader on New Soil and Mclean leader on Fuego. Byrd has a solo on tract 3, Greasy, on New Soil that is just incredible. As has been previouly mentioned, Jackie plays wonderfully throughout Fuego. Many similarities on these two. I think $20 bucks may be a little much for this one but it is a good session. If you like early Byrd I think you will like this one. It is similar to his early stuff and I have the domestic release and do not find the sound bad at all. Whatever you do you will enjoy this one whenever you get it.
  10. I felt the same way when I first got this CD. Now it's one of my favorites... go figure. AfricaBrass, That happens to me alot. I pick up a disc which at first I don't really like, and 6-8 months later I give it another try and bam, I think it is great. In fact, I don't think I will give a cd that I really dislike, even though there may be several. May have to eat my words, sooner rather than later!
  11. Dave, Not unless you want your best customers to quit shopping with you. There is a used shop around here where I used to go and find things on a regular basis. Now I think they put everything hard to find on ebay. I would pick up not only the hard to find but other discs as well. Now I seldom go by. You have to offer the treasures to keep them coming back. And in this instance I would say the folks in Chicago are lucky.
  12. While looking over the list I can't help but notice how many of these were very early RVG's..... You don't think BN may be thinking about letting these go OOP, do you???
  13. Jazz Groove, I spotted both of these used at a shop today. Send me a pm if you would like to try to work out a trade or something.
  14. Aggie, IMO Unit Structures is a reach. I am about where you seem to be with Cecil Taylor. Have Love for Sale, Unit Structures, Coltrane Time and one that I would reccomend, Jazz Advance. Much more accessible than Unit Structures IMO. Taylor is a challenge. Please let us know where you go from here and how it turns out!! B) B)
  15. West Coast Jazz.... Amy, Andrezza, Baker, Mulligan, Desmond Sonny Criss...big time
  16. What does 'OBI' stand for? Seriously, I don't know. I've always been too embarrassed to ask. Additionally, what is the point of having the strip on the Japanese releases? The US RVGs don't have the strip. I'll take a stab at this one... I believe obi is a Japanese word for the sash that goes around a kimono (robe). But please, someone tell me is this is incorrect. As far as the purpose? That's pretty subjective. One cool thing it can offer is to have the barcode on the obi, and not on the artwork itself, like on the JRVG series of mini-lps. Of course, some fans as well like to roll up an obi, and smoke them... B) I always figured it was an acronym for "Outer Box Insert" or something as profane as that. I kinda like the kimono-sash idea. Much more alluring. Would it still work for the OBI on the domestic Conn.'s.?
  17. Kevin, Glad to see you posting again. Missed your input.
  18. With modern forms of just in time inventory controls, I suspect it has more to do with the marketing of the product than it does the distribution. That said, I am sure there has to be some minimum below which it is not cost effective to manufacture. Don't know if that is 100, 1000, or 10000. Maybe Chuck could enlighten us all!

Good things come to those who wait!!!!........... huh Street Singer...............
  20. I just noticed this one one the Dustygoove site today. I wondered what the Spanish versions sound like. I also wondered if its release to the Spanish audience forbode it re-release in the States. It sure seems about time.
  21. Do not know how I missed this thread originally. I had occasion to A/B The Ultimate Blue Train and Blue Train RVG recently at the record shop. I was determined to see if I could hear any improvement. The conditions were very good. Identical CD players, headphones etc. I must adimit that I agree with what many on the board have previously said about the remastering. The RVG sounded "bright" but not in a necessarily improved way. In the end I determined that Ultimate BT was the more natural sounding of the two. My criteria was to try to determine which of the two recordings sounded more lifelike. I think the RVG sound was over produced to the point where it did not sound like you would expect to hear in a live performance. Just my opinion. I do not know what the SCAD sounds like but I am glad that it is nto something Blue Note is going to pursue at this time. It is for anti-copying purposes in my book and has little to do with significant improvement in sound quality. A long time ago I read where the record companies had learned to add a second layer of the exact same recorded material on top of the original but slow it done a fraction of a second. It supposedly resulted in a fuller sound but the real beauty was that it could not easily be duplicated. The original research had nothing to do with improved sound. I suspect that SACD is the resulting technology from that early research with maybe some extra tweaks. The couple of SACD's that I have heard do not have a fuller sound, but a slightly muddied sound, IMHO. I am sure there are folks on this board that know more about this than I do and I am not trying to pick a fight with Greg or anyone else over this hotly debated format. But everyone has a right to an opinion and in my opinion Blue Note is making the right decision.
  22. I happen to like Jack Wilson a lot.Been listening to the Curtis Amy, Katanga, a lot lately(thanks jazzkrow) I have been trying to find Easterly Winds for some time but have not run across that one yet. I spotted a used copy of Something Personal the other day. If someone would like me to pick it up just send me a pm. Maybe we could work out a trade or something.
  23. Interesting notion indeed, Soulstream. This is why I enjoy this board. I plan to dig both of these out and give them a listen. I love to compare how players incorporated new ideas into their own work. Thanks Soulstream.
  24. I really don't have a lot of Reece but I have both Flight to Jordan and Comin On. I think both of these are great. In fact, Flight to Jordan is one of my favorites. It is a very sophisticated piece of work to me. You begin to get hints of where the music was going. These players were extending the traditional in very unique, adventurous but subtle way. If you can't tell, I really like this one. Put up an extra copy of this one for trade not long ago and was surprised when no one jumped all over it. I guess everyone on this board either has it or doesn't know what they are missing. It is a very enjoyable piece. This is another instance where I wish BN would keep stuff available a little longer.
