I probably rate Open Sesame and Ready for Freddie as Hubbard's best work but would definitely include Blue Spirits is his top five. IMHO

Bol, Sent you a pm on: Lee Morgan, “The Rajah” (BN) oop

Absolutely! This is great, great stuff. I have suspected that this one may receive the double RVG treatment. BN seems to like to include a double set with each announcement. This would be a good one to bring back if it is OOP.

Thanks guys. I knew I would get some good info. and recommendations from the group. I will have to check out that Hank Jones recommendation. Looks pretty tasty. Brad, thanks for the tip. If you find out which Lee Morgan albums he was on let me know. I seem to be a fan of both..... Thanks again.

I recently purchased an Ike Quebec, Soul Samba, mostly to fill some holes in my collection. Much to my surprise I have been enjoying this one more than I anticipated. I think Ike's playing is soulful as always, but I have really enjoyed the sidemen on this one. Kenny Burrell is outstanding but I have been fascinated with the bassist Wendell Marshall. The guy is very creative and has a really nice touch. I am not familiar with him. Looked him up on AMG(yes the NEW version, only took a week!) and saw that he was in the Ellington band. Did he ever record with smaller groups? Are there any sessions that anyone would recommend? Thanks for the help.

Do you buy music faster than you listen to it?
Morganized replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I probably fit into this category. This Board doesn't help. I like to have the title available in order to understand the insightful comments made by the members of the Board. Even though I may not feel that I can contribute to the discussion about some titles, I always enjoy the comments made by others, especially when I am listening to the title as I read the thread!!!! Unfortunately there are too many obscure titiles that are discussed. I sometimes feel it is a competition as to who has the most obscure titles rather than a discussiorn about the artist' contribution and performance. Keeps me looking however. -
I tend to agree with many of your comments. I think she has excellent phrasing and style although not tremendous range. I think she has been good for jazz overall weighing all the pros and cons. If you want to hear her at her best IMHO, try this one:

Nice!

Couldn't agree more with Rooster. I think Speak Like a Child is one of Herbie's best. I look forward to the extra tracks. What a great list. I already have most of these in one form or another but all of these titiles live up to the RVG moniker. IMHO

Will The Site Crash Again This Weekend?
Morganized replied to Soulstation1's topic in Forums Discussion
Anyone notice that this has been happening much more often since Jim went with the revolving billboard.......??? Don't know a thing about programing but it is an interesting coincidence. -
Well personally I would agree about Shorter, but not Hill, and I'm a huge Hill fan. Hill's output for BN was fascinating and reached some true pinnacles but I find it to be far more inconsistent, with less full realization of his vision on certain of the (mostly later period) recordings, than either McLean's or Shorter's BN output. You know, brilliant ideas with merely good execution some times. One other piece of food for thought - McLean made a lot more recordings as a leader for BN than Shorter, so to me that's impressive too, that he was able to keep up the quality control over such a long time and over so many dates. The flip of that is Shorter was cranking out true genius writing and playing for Miles concurrently during his BN run - a really staggering feat - so it's not like he was exactly slacking! I agree with the good Doctor on this one. I think Mclean's consistently high output is truly remarkable. I cannot think of anyone's whose continued growth is better documented than McLean. To me, it is mind blowing to listen to McLean's BN output in sequence and listen to how he progresses. Shorter shares the same qualities but as the Dr. has pointed out, you have to factor in his work with Miles to get a real sense of his direction and even then you wonder how much influence Miles was having on his work. I love Shorter, don't get me wrong. I think his work is equally fascinating to ponder. His growth is equally as fascinating as McLean's even if it is a little more difficult to sequence. Excellent post Doc!

Conn. I really am not looking for a tit for tat but when I am being mocked I feel the need to respond. I think your comments presuppose that the only way to trade is 1 for 1. I'll give you 1 of mine for 1 of yours. As I indicated above, I have found that the Board Members are very astute as to the relative worth of the CD's that they own. Accordingly, you might have a trade offer that offers 2 of mine for 1 of yours; or 2 of yours for 1 of mine. Or you may have an offer that offers 1 of mine plus cash, for 1 of yours; or 1 of yours plus cash for 1 of mine....... And that is just the start. There are a number of different possibilities but if a deal is struck, it is a deal that works for both parties. This is not The Art of the Deal, but your comments suggest a level of sophistication that is not shared by everyone on this Board. You do not have to be stupid to work a trade, creative maybe, but not stupid. If you choose to sell at retail and buy at retail that is up to you and you are certainly free to pursue that route. There are a number of dealers on ebay who you can join. In the meantime I will continue to try to get hard to find cd's into the hands of people here who may be looking for them. If I can expand my collection at the same time, I will attempt to do so. I do not intend to offend anyone. Fortunately there are a number of nice folks who I have met here that seem to be trying to do the same thing. Good luck

Conn 500, As many folks on this Board already know, I am not a dealer. With that said it is not my goal to end up on the "best" side of the deal nor the "worst" side of the deal. I am simply trying to add to my collection and I always try to see if anyone in need of a disc has something that I may be looking for. If I can find a trade that works for both of us then I consider that a win, win. I can assure you that the Board Members here are pretty astute when it comes to relative worth. When I spot a disc that I think board members may want, I try to let people know. If no trade deals show up, I usually pick the disc up for the first person that ask me to buy it. I sell it to them for what it cost me to buy, package and ship it. There are a number of Board Members who have received discs from me like this. I think most consider this very fair. As difficult as it may be to believe, there are a lot of Board Members who are interested in the music, not how much it will bring on ebay. I have been fortunate enough to meet many of them. I would like to think that I have helped them out on occasion, I know there are many who have helped me out as well. I certainly did not intend to offend anyone's sensibilities with my list. That just seems to be what I am looking for at the moment. I think Common Touch is a pretty good soul jazz session and is one that I do not see around here very often. I do know that certain titles seem to show up in certain parts of the country more often than other parts for some reason. Thanks for providing me the opportunity to clear all that up!!
-
Thanks Jazzbo, Underground for the clarification. You are absolutely correct. I should have said Blue Note,TOCJ JRVG, RVG, Rare Groove, etc. etc. etc...........

Common Touch Stanley Turrentine/Shirley Scott I spotted the above CD in excellent condition at a local shop I frequent. Anyone interested? As always I would prefer to trade. These are the ones I am looking for. I passed on this one several years ago only to regret it. I have not seen it again in decent shape. From what I have I would say:

Same here. The rhythm section catches fire, Jackie is rawer than fresh meat, and Ornette's trumpet playing sounds like he shedded for the gig. OK, OK.....I'm pulling it out again right now to see what I'm missing. And thanks Free for All. Looks like there are equally strong opinions on the other side. That's what I love about this board!
-
Gee Rooster, Last time I checked I think my ears were pretty "open minded" but guess I'll have to check it out again just to make sure. I love most of Jackie's work and always find him pushing the boundry of creativity. I think this was just such an attempt. Unfortunately for me, I just don't think it seems to work. Compared to some of his other work there seems to be a little tentativeness in his and Ornette's exchange. Just my opinion. I will listen again with those "open minded" ears and see if I hear anything different!
-
Does anyone here besides me find Jackie McLean's New and Old Gospel a big disappointment. In this instance we not only get a less than stellar performance from Jackie, we get one from Ornette as well....IMHO Frankly, I think Tippin the Scales has more going for it and everyone around here seems to hate that one. What's the verdict on this one. Dud or Not?
