  1. Any chance you caught the Brotzmann Tentet show in Austin in April 2004? Vandermark used MacArthur grant dollars to cover band expenses for that tour. I can't imagine they would have made it to Texas otherwise and for that I am most thankful.
  2. Since the French RCA Jazz Tribune sets are 2 discs each for a total of 6 discs (though I've never actually seen vol. 5/6) is the 3 CD box mentioned at the top of this thread a subset of that same material?
  3. The fruit juice company also produced that last Atlantic recording, too, didn't they? The one recorded in Jamaica, where I'm sure a high time was enjoyed by all. Yes, Grape Escape and Odwalla Theme were on Coming Home Jamaica. The liner notes elaborate on the Odwalla connection I believe... it's been a while and can't recall the specific content. Oh, and Strawberry Mango too!

  5. Looking for the version that fits standard jewel cases (as opposed to the mini-LP variety). I use them to protect digipacks. I used to get these from Red Trumpet but they appear defunct (news to me) and the company that took over doesn't appear to carry them. Any leads would be appreciated.
  6. On a related note and perhaps for help in gauging market value for Nessa LPs, Reckless Records in Chicago has a used copy of Mitchell's L-R-G/The Maze/S II Examples (2 LPs) described as in "Near Mint Condition" for $49.99.
  7. For the Piano Concertos I recommend this one: Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos 1-4 / Ashkenazy, Previn
  8. Spaceways Incorporated and Zu deserve mention.
  9. One note though, make sure to check each of the CDs. There was some sort of production flaw. And several of the sets had CDs with a "film" on the music side that looked faintly like the cover art - as if the CDs were stacked before the graphics were "dry". Anyway, the CDs wouldn't play all the way through. They skipped around like they were scratched. I bought this set new shortly after it had gone OOP first from B&N... and then from Amazon. I returned about 5 copies - a couple to each vendor - before I got a good one.
  10. Another hearty endorsement for this set - especially at that price!

Shandars... Is that the Fondation Maeght material? I've listened to a handful of the shows from that European tour with Rivers and really enjoyed them. It'd be nice to see some of that released on (legit) CD.

Setting aside the question whether you get anything out of Cecil in general, my own take on this is that it is overlong and rambles. The CD version has introductory solos and duets which (to me) are tedious and get me bored before I have properly got started - I generally skip them. There *are* passages that appeal to me, but the general length of the venture is just too taxing and I can never remember where are the bits I like. I don't like the sound much either. I can see why this is collectable but maybe it is one of those holy grail recordings that doesn't quite warrant the ebay price? (OK for sure next time I play this I'll regret every word I just wrote...) I think the reputation this set has garnered due to it's spotty availability created some undue expectations. I suspect if the recent reissue were it's initial release it would win album of the year in many circles and be discussed in a similar manner as the recent Monk/Coltrane release.
  13. I picked up the CD the other day. After having listened to about half of it I'm pretty disappointed in the quality of the performances. Talib Kweli in particular sounds pretty bad.

I like this set too. I also think highly of the duo with Tatsi Aoki recently released on Southside. The Pi discs are OK, I much prefer Mitchell's non-AEoC work these days. (And my opinions are in no way influenced by where I think they stand in comparison to Sound.)
  15. I'm out. Regretfully. My wife has family in town from India. If I were to come to Chicago this weekend rumors would be circulated (in India) that my wife wasn't really married or that we were having "problems". Gossipy folks those Indians. ;-)
  16. Great stuff as usual Mark! I am going to miss that wallpaper.
  17. Mark, how was the show. Go ahead, make me regret not being able to attend.

    Tim Green

He's absolutely killin' on Robert Walter's "Super Heavy Organ". I can not stop listening to that session. Addiction. The other stuff I have someone sent me in the mail and I don't even know what it is. But I've ordered some CDs .... so I'll let you know. I highly recommend Tim on Dennis Gonzalez' Old Time Revival. It's a limited edition release and I bet there are not many copies left. You can order directly from Dennis. Dennis Gonzalez

    Tim Green

Yes. Tim Green played on DG's Old Time Revival and Home. Great player. I think Dennis told me year or so ago that Tim's been playing with Cyril Neville pretty much full-time post Katrina. That he was on the road a bunch playing many of the gig opportunities that opened up for New Orleans-based musicians after Katrina. I can ask Dennis for an update if you would like. Or you could wander over to the Jazzcorner forum and inquire yourself. Dennis has his own thread there in the "ask the musicians" section. I would guess a search of that thread would pull up additional info on Tim. The way Dennis has spoken of him I'd say they are pretty close.

I really like Winged Serpents (Sliding Quadrants). I've heard some unreleased live recordings of this Orchestra of Two Continents that are equally interesting and powerful - what a great band. CT hasn't done too many large ensemble projects and this one might be my favorite. I think this may have been the last CT release with Jimmy Lyons on it. He passed away soon after. Rashied Bakr and Andre Martinez were the drummers. Bakr was also the drummer in Other Dimensions In Music with William Parker, Roy Campbell, Matt Shipp and Daniel Carter. That band was very influenced by CT. Bakr has recorded with William Parker quite a bit I think. Andre's latest project is called Earth People. It's more of a collective than a band and has included Sabir Mateen, Daniel Carter and Karen Borca among others. The music is a jazz-fusion based gumbo of sorts with stylistic influences from all over the planet. Samples and CDs are at CD Baby. Earth People

I have this one. It's an EP, just 10 minutes long and a rehearsal piece. I haven't listened to it in a while but I recall it being rather straight ahead to begin with. And that the improvisations that follow pretty much leave the context of Miles' Mode in the dust...exactly what you would expect from these guys.

    Anthony Braxton

Mark S., does this show coincide with your trip to NYC? If yes, you have to attend and photograph it.
