    Funny Rat

I guess I own fewer Aylers than the rest of you. I ordered: Henry Grimes John Stevens Electrics Firehouse SURD Janson / Kullhammar / Nilssen-Love I was really disappointed to see that the Howard is OOP. I really wanted that one. I'm tempted to place another order. Does anyone want to share their opinions on... Mongezi Feza (I really like his work with the Blue Notes) Anders Gahnold Trio Hamid Drake / Assif Tsahar - Soul Bodies 2 The Dynamic Duo Bayashi
  2. I just noticed Dust-To-Digital has released the complete Fonotone catalog as a 5-disc box set - Fonotone Records (1956-1969). It's the first time any of this material has been issued on CD. I'm intrigued by the Blind Thomas (aka John Fahey) recordings. Can anyone comment on the rest of the catalog?
  3. Very useful thread. I'll be in San Francisco (downtown) on business a couple of times during last two weeks of February. I'd appreciate recommendations for: 1. Alternative/Rock/Pop venues along the lines of Bottom Of The Hill 2. Used CD shops (in the event Amoeba doesn't provide enough of a fix) Thanks in advance.
  4. It sounded better, the biggest improvement was bass frequency focus, with my previous stuff, Audio Reaserch LS22 and Mark Levinson 29. Considering the cost and the results, I wouldn't buy it again, expecially with Linn gears. I think that Linn's power supply (switching mode) is quite indifferent to power conditioner, at least to my ears. I have a Linn Classik that I've paired with a Monster power conditioner for years. When I was living in apartments I think it helped. But now that I'm in a house I'd have to agree - I don't notice much difference. It's proven to be an excellent surge protector however.
  5. I'm envious too - I've yet to see CT live. I'm efforting to conjure up a work-related excuse to be in NYC on the 8th but chances appear remote. Here are the details: Cecil Taylor with Albey Balgochian and Jackson Krall ("Cecil Taylor + 2: 3 Aha") Tuesday & Wednesday, February 7th & 8th, 2OO6 The Blue Note 131 West 3rd St. near 6th Ave., Manhattan 212-475-8592 8 & 1O:3O p.m. sets $35 cover at tables, $2O at bar Produced by Jill Newman Productions. The Blue Note - Event Calendar
  6. Yes, we're guilty. And now the rest of you can join in - Sal is on the fence about buying the Dolphy Prestige recordings box. Mark and I think he should take the plunge. What do you think?
  7. There's not much for me to add beyond Mark and Sal's contributions which are spot on. Meeting the two of them in person was pleasure. We must have looked silly constantly checking out the door for walk-ins. Dawkins and Bankhead showed, we got excited, and they didn't play. But we were most hopeful for Hamid since Fred told us he'd have to pull his horn back out if he showed up. Alas, our visions of a Fred, Hamid, Harrison Bankhead trio never materialized. Mark is right, they were just a tad bit unorganized but it was good fun nonetheless. If any of you plan to attend the upcoming shows I'd advise you to get there by 8:00 sharp. Oh, and plan on eating at the Star of Siam next door to the JRM - good Thai food and cheap!
  8. I bought "VOLUME 2" at the show...haven't had time to play it yet. I'll chime back in when I've had the chance.
  9. I believe the Jazz Record Mart has some King Jazz titles available.
  10. I have the first 5 volumes. I'm sure Brownie can tell us how many, if not all, of the 27 were issued.
  11. That was exactly my thought... Commit the crime and if you happen to get caught simply give the money back and it's resolved. Not much of a deterent. Is this an agreement between the two parties - they won't press charges if the debt is repaid? Or is this actually English law?
  12. Is this the same session that's (at least partially) spread out over the first 2-3 volumes of the Brownie's Eyes series on Philology?
  13. Good point. Fent99 asked in a previous post and I'll ask again - Does anyone have any thoughts/comments on Moholo's Viva-La-Black work? I'm not familiar with any of it.
  14. Up with the news that Ogun has recently released Louis Moholo's Spirits Rejoice! (1978) on CD for the first time. Finally! Drums - Louis Moholo Piano - Keith Tippett Tenor Sax - Evan Parker Bass - Harry Miller, Johnny Dyani Trombone - Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti Trumpet - Kenny Wheeler The music blends British improv and beautiful South African-influenced themes in a manner that's been well articulated throughout this thread. Both parts are strong, neither overpowering the other. It's IMHO perhaps the best example of such a blending on Ogun or otherwise. The release is a 2-disc set with the 2nd disc being a septet recording called Bra Louis - Bra Tebs that's not been previously released - "new recording, recorded 1995 being the last recording of Viva-La-Black" per the Cadillac Jazz website.
  15. Wasn't Aida just reissued on CD about a year (or less) ago? If so, I guess they went quick.
  16. Can you give some more details of the recording please. Recorded 1979 and originally released by Interplay. Tapscott - Piano Art Davis - Bass Roy Haynes - Drums I agree, it is a good one.
  17. So called "son of Miles" and I have a close mutual friend. We've met a handful of times - his house is a trip in that it's full of some pretty amazing memorabilia. When I get a chance, I'll inquire about the release delay.
  18. Blake, come on the 9th instead!!! The 10th-15th is Joe's regular weekly shows.....in any event, I will be there on Monday the 9th! How about the other Chicago guys.......JazzyPaul, Larry Kart???? m~ Oops... I goofed on the date. I meant the 9th! :-)
  19. I'll be making the trip in from Dallas for the show on the 10th.

    Ginger Baker

I believe Baker was deported shortly after 9/11 as a result of tightened visa requirements. My recollection is foggy but I seem to recall he either left voluntarily or would not cooperate with US Immigration in taking the necessary steps that would have enabled him to stay.
