  1. At the moment I have my jazz LP’s loosely sorted alphabetically by artist. I have also been thinking of separating label outputs. As I pick up more LPs from the Hat Hut, Hat Art, Black Saint/Soul Note, Horo, Sackville, Nessa catalogs, I will slowly begin file them together by label – though I am having a hard time finding any Hat Art/Hut records out here in the Pacific Northwest. Anywho, it is interesting to have the varied and sometimes challenging music released on these labels together in one place for easy access. As for classical or misc type LPs, those are pretty much still stored pell-mell.
  2. This is just another good reason to take more trips to Chicago and Madison. You think finding jazz recordings in Milwaukee is difficult try finding anything besides Wynton M or Kenny G in Oshkosh, WI. When I visited Milwaukee last year I also had a hard time finding decent CD/LP stores that carried jazz titles. Isn’t there a store near the Oriental that has a pretty good jazz LP selection? Have you been to Mad City Music on Williamson in Madsion? They used to have some good finds. There is also an okay CD shop on Monroe St. again in Madison, about six blocks south of Regent. There is also another cool little shop on the 700 block of E. Johnson next to the Caribou Tavern. Last time I was there I found some gems on the Eremite label and Mulgrew Miller’s The Countdown on LP.
  3. Dave I just sent you an e-mail with a possible lead for Roland Kirk box. Good luck! Alejandro
  4. Almost broke 1000! The severed head of the penguin kept hitting those mines. Good way to get the frustrations out while looking for work!
  5. Andrew Hill followed by the Sam Rivers and Woody Shaw sets. Still my three favorites!
  6. I just picked this one up last weekend. Great music but what were those LP cover designers thinking? Ranks up there with Chick Corea’s smurf-themed Friends album.
  7. Hilarious! This brings back bad memories of boring meetings about leveraging this or deploying that. I really hate when someone asks me if I have enough bandwith.
  8. These discs have gone for more than $75 US on ebay in the past. Anyways, $39 US is better than $75 US in my opinion. Also, the licensing agreements on many Mosaic sets run out well before they sell the pre-determined limited edition run. An example of this is the Woody Shaw set. So, while it would be nice for Mosaic if they sold 5,000 or 10,000 copies of each set, this doesn’t necessarily determine what they release.
  9. Great news! I just received a response from Mosaic, and it looks like this material will be issued as a Mosaic Select in late 2004. $39 US sure beats the hell out of $300 US on ebay–and the money goes straight to Mosaic.
  10. No news yet, but I would be very happy if this became a reality. Didn’t Blue Note/EMI originally release the concerts on three cds? This would make an excellent Mosaic Select! I just sent Mosaic an e-mail regarding this issue--hope to hear back form them soon.
  11. I am really glad that Criterion decided to re-release those Tati movies. Down by Law is one of my favorite movies and the Criterion two-disc set is well worth the $39.95 price tag—as are most dvds they put out. Here are a few other films from the Criterion Collection well worth checking out if you haven’t already:
  12. I am eagerly awaiting this release:
  13. Hello Vibes, I just sent you a PM regarding the Louis Bellson disc. Send me an e-mail if you’re interested.
  14. I’ll have to second and third The Band’s Music From Big Pink. I just love the putting the needle down and hearing the opening chords to Tears of Rage. I also really enjoy listening to my LP copy of Van Morrison’s Hard Nose the Highway. Now, all I need is to upgrade to a Rega P3 and I would be a very happy man. Well, there are a lot of other things I would like, but for now this will do.
  15. Are you talking about those Jewel Box Begone space saving sleeves? If so, I recently purchased a bunch from the Jazz Loft—great service by the way—and have mixed feelings about them. While they do save a lot of space on the cd rack, it’s often hard to read the cd spines. Call me crazy, but there is something comforting about seeing all those great label and artist names printed on the cd spines, lined up in a row on ye ole cd shelfe. If you move a lot they are a good investment due to their compactness, but if you have a house or have the space you might want to stick with the jewel case. I think that once my wife and I purchase a house, I will be transferring a lot of my jazz cds from space saving sleeves back into jewel cases. Those sleeves from Red Trumpet also sound very interesting.
  16. Hello EKE BBB, Djangos.com currently has one of these title in stock: Fats Waller & His Rhythm: Fats Waller and His Rhythm: The Middle Years, Part 1 (1936-1938) http://www.djangomusic.com/item_music.asp?id=R+++158517&dt=0 They are a used record chain out of Portland, OR and overall a pretty good online source for used music. Over the years I have managed to snag Mobley's <I>A Slice Off The Top</I> and Bergonzi's<I>Standard Gonz</I> for good prices. Though, like a lot of stores, they sometimes charge a bit too much for certain cds. They do ship internationally. Check this link for more info and prices: http://www.djangomusic.com/faq.asp#shipping2 Alejandro
  17. Here are a few radio stations that stream non-elevator type jazz on the Web at various times throughout the day. KBCS out of Bellevue, WA plays jazz most weekday mornings until 12:00 PST. WKCR out of New York plays a lot of jazz and experimental music throughout the day. You can also access their birthday marathon archives. Check out WFMU’s schedule for jazz line up. They have a great soul music show on Fridays nights. I listen to WKCR the most. They have a lot of extremely knowledgeable DJs. Some DJs like Phil Schaap know a little bit too much and let you, and the musicians they are interviewing, know it. 18. Thanks for the heads up! Listening to this concert made working on this gray and rainy morning more bearable.
