    Ralph Towner

i like towner with clive stevens best and next best would be with horacee arnold.
  2. "they're going at it as hard as they caaaannnn...."
  3. a duo of getz and jones? that expands my prostate in excitement almost as much as finding tapes of the dave burrell/sam woodyard duos which happened in france in the late-ish 70s.
  4. only a pedant would not want to shit their ears all over this. though these are pretty boring tunes.
  5. stan turrentine-another story (is he getting a bit heated?) sonny stitt-goin down slow (the first tune on the second side...awesome drum break!) is this george duvivier on bass again? he is the bassist on my favorite "straight" album (eddie davis-the heavy hitter).
  6. these albums from dusty groove are in crappy shape! i am now listening to willis jackson "nothin' butt" and this one is fine but previously don patterson "mellow soul' and "satisfaction!" were debacles for VG, as was jimmy mcgriff's "something to comy by". i am angry. i was also rocking to groove holmes "onsaya joy" and that album is awesome. so glad i finally own it. though the condition and price from dusty groove was more than the local record store with poorer condition taboot. also listened to mickey tucker's "triplicity' which was pretty cool. giant steps on organ. and another johnny lytle muse album with a cheesy cover and john patton on keyboards and some nice george duvivier. and by keyboards i do not mean organ but i also do not mean moog. nothing too exciting.
  7. rube, i kind of like concrete jungle. how many albums in 1978 had a woody shaw and a bob marley cover?!?!? actually i guess the cover says mccoy tyner composed "blues for ball" but i thought it was shaw. anyway, my point is made. starts off terrible but improves. i will certainly look for the album you are hyping. mr. fathead does suck.
  8. yeah you should definitely remove that link. jim won't like it and it is bad for that site.
  9. and then fischer and newman would triumphantly reunite for....concrete jungle!
  10. gene ammons/sonny stitt-together again for the last time pretty good. terrible name for the album. morbid.
  11. cal tjader-putting it together? is that what this one is called? $3 but not in great shape. jeez, dick berk was a big man. starts a bit mellow but picks up. glad to own it.
  12. paul jeffrey-watershed (w. richard davis, jack wilkins, ts monk)...ok. not awesome. fine. i like jeffrey as a saxman. i can see why he would have been good with monk sr. gene ammons-free again not feeling it! you might be going in the sell pile, gene. i am sorry to say. charles earland-smokin' more late 70s muse entertainment. i like walter perkins on this kind of stuff. these albums all have interesting casts...schitter, george coleman, perkins, bobby durham, etc....though earland can lean on a chord more than i like every now and then. one could start a library of swinging yet interesting stuff all with $3-$6 muse albums....and then change their name to magnificent goldberg!
  13. a lot of eddie harris albums i was high on got old quick because they were inconsistent but come on down is bad assteroid killing the mammoths and saurian lizards. donald dunn on bass, cornell dupree on guitar, ira sullivan on trumpet, etc.
  14. does anyone here use the site who's name you would use a bow for to shoot it and it would then fly quickly? someone just showed it to me. if i had the energy i would look up and download some exciting sounding shows. but i don't have energy for that. glad to know it is there though.
  15. charles earland-mama roots see i don't know if i would buy this on CD but as a $5 record it is awesome!
  16. dave pike-time out of mind. also put on willis jackson-bar wars for a bit. very nice. only knew the CD cover but the LP cover is much better.
  17. johnny lytle-fast hands this album has a weird fusion vibe. very subtle. maybe because mervin bronson is on bass. something about the chord progressions maybe and the rhythms don't say jazz to me though it is not really rock. interesting for a later muse album-idris muhammed, mickey tucker are along for the ride.
  18. eddie harris-come on down sealed, only six bucks...i like it so far. more um consistent than much of harris' atlantic output in that there is one band/one sound to the album.
  19. maynard parker-midnight rider probably not worth the purchase but sealed and looked intriguing. sounds ok so far.
  20. ramsey lewis-them changes. why was this 5 bucks in nice condition? i guess i am listening to this in tribute to buddy miles. good phil upchurch on this one. stepping out of the studio...this is live in minnesotta.
  21. groove holmes: x-77...just opened a sealed copy. i was expecting something more exciting.
  22. wow what a shitting coincidence. i have been down on dead for a while as i said maybe above (can still put on my favorites, but no first sets and nothing outside of '68-'79) but 7/19/74 has always been a personal favorite and i recently put it on and it is still great. probably the only US blues i will willingly listen to (well also i think there is one from 6/74 out of something good in boston or providence which i would do again). but this show is great. or at least the second set is. don't listen to the first. but i would say this is an underrated set and one of the band's best ever for good improvising. everything is really well extended. i was actually in a small trendy womens clothing boutique with my ex-girlfriend the other day, a japanese place, and the hip japanese dude working the store had on a trippy truckin'. not even a studio version. a flat out either '73 or '74 truckin' which was going into an other one it sounded like as we left but it was rocking trippy for a good fifteen minutes as my ex tried on boots. was surprised to find that in an east village hip boutique.
  23. junior mance-live at the top. nice atlantic album from '69. fathead newman will supposedly sit in but i haven't heard him yet. just bought a bunch of records the last few days. sold a keyboard, got some cash, the cash is now vinyl.
  24. gabor szabo-rambler...don't really know wolfgang melz but he is pretty good at bass. and writing the kind of song that should appear on the gabor szabo album rambler. also of course i am enjoying the pete turner cover photo work.
