Hey, that's seriously nice stuff! Loads I've never heard of in there, too. Who WERE all these other bands?

The Mar-Keys simply were Booker T. & The MG's combined with the Memphis Horns.

The Bar-Kays were Otis Redding's backing band.

The others probably used different combinations of the Mar-Keys musicians I know that Albert King did for his lone Stax LP.

09 KNUCKLEHEAD – THE BAR –KAYS

Wasn't SOUL FINGER by the BAR-KAYS, too? At least I have a single of this. When I bought the Bar-Kays lone Volt LP later I noticed that the LP had a different take of KNUCKLEHEAD!

The original Mar-Keys had a different organist. Difficult to identify who was, in fact, on all the Mar-Keys records because the personnel was whoever was hanging around the studio on the day. The CD issue of the 2 LPs "Last night" and "Do the Popeye with the Mar-keys" has what info there is on the early Mar-key's sessions, but it is, I think, from the memories of some of the musicians involved - no records.

I was wondering who bands/musicians such as The Triumphs, Eddie Kirk, Billy & the King Bees, the Vardells, the Cobras, the Baracudas, Sir Isaac & the Doo Dads (obviously Hayes but plus who?) all were. I've never come across any of them in my extensive purchases of Stax singles in the '60s.

Actually, Soul Finger was done by the Bar-Kays (written by James Alexander)

Vol 1 - Disc 7 - Track 20 from the boxset and, so, that's a misprint methinks.

Rob Bowman's book is essential for nearly all things Stax/Volt.

The boxsets have nice thick booklets too

with all kinds of details and stories.

Got 18 of the 28 discs loaded up.

Goin to bed...tomorrow morn: the last 10 discs. ;)

How many Stax 1960's singles do you own?

Not nearly as many as I've bought. When my mother ran away to sea in '67, I had to move into a bedsit and there was no room for my singles, so I gave maybe more than a thousand away! I guess I must have about 20-30, without going through them. I have 33 albums.

i'm kicking myself in the ass for missing out on the 2nd and 3rd Stax box sets over on Emusic during their unlimited phase

i can't see myself spending almost $50 per set on DownLoads when the sets are not that much more
