John+Coltrane+Giant+Steps+-+60th+Anniver

:tup I remember buying it on release in 1960 when I was 20: my first Coltrane album.

:tup The Coltrane quartet appeared in London just before the release of this album and the new music was a great surprise. I missed the London trip, but a friend who didn't described the new music to me - very accurately as it turned out, once I could hear it on record.

Revisiting an old favorite in a favorite version.

Duke Ellington "Jazz Party in Stereo" Mobile Fidelity gold cd

1601402099_01.jpg

Engineering and artistry meet in an epic encounter.

I saw that very edition for a bargain price and suggested to my hephew that he'd like it. I wish that I had purchased it instead.

This recording was my introduction to Duke Ellington.

One question: Is the applause present, as the Columbia reissue omits it, even though the performances are identical. Either there were mikes in the hallway outside the studio, or it was dubbed in later.

The applause IS present on this one. I believe that the applause is dubbed in and this one uses the LP master tape. The Columbia cds seem to use a pre-dubbed master tape.

No release of this I have heard, LP or cd, sounds less than really good. This one has just a touch more "dimensionality" to it to my ears.

Amazing music.
