Rabshakeh Posted July 29, 2022 Report Posted July 29, 2022 (edited) Anteloper – Pink Dolphins (International Anthem, 2022) I liked Anteloper's first record better than this, and Jaimie Branch's own stuff more. Feels like International Anthem is putting out too many weak or mediocre records nowadays, after such a strong start. It doesn't help that I have just been listening to this classic: Ray Bryant – Alone With The Blues (New Jazz, 1959) Now on to this recent release: Moor Mother - Jazz Codes (Anti, 2022) I think this one was summed up in my eyes by the review in the Guardian, which called it "essential", before going on to give it a generous, but not very "essential"-looking, four stars out of five. Nothing here that wasn't already making the rounds among smug grad student hip hop listeners back in the early 00s, and not even really up to that low bar. It seems squarely aimed at desperate relevance-hungry middle aged critics, rather than any demographic of listeners. Edited July 29, 2022 by Rabshakeh Quote
jazzbo Posted July 29, 2022 Report Posted July 29, 2022 I keep coming back to this one, my favorite Wilkins so far. Wilkins continues to impress me with his writing and arranging and I love the general sound he gets from his alto. I wish him continued and long success. Immanuel Wilkins "Omega" Blue Note cd Quote

JSngry Posted July 29, 2022 Author Report Posted July 29, 2022 from 1960. interesting...this guy was picking up on Coltrane (or Wayne...), like, right away...or trying to....either way, interesting. Quote
Joe Posted July 29, 2022 Report Posted July 29, 2022 Sam Sam Gendel, SUPERSTORE https://samgendel.bandcamp.com/album/superstore-2 Interesting miniatures built around Gendel's (often electronically modified) saxophone when not built on (usually J Dilla-esque) beats Quote

jazzbo Posted July 29, 2022 Report Posted July 29, 2022 Chrissie Hynde "Standing in the Doorway--Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan" LP I kept hesitating picking this one up. I love Chrissie. . . I love Bob. . . but I rarely like "Sings Bob Dylan" type releases. Amazon had this ridiculously priced for the LP so I went for it, I mean 10 dollars including shipping (Prime). . . made it hard to resist. Well. . . I like Chrissie's singing here for the most part and for the most part her interpretations of the songs. But it was literally recorded on iPhones, and I suspect in several different reverberant bathrooms--the sound is a soup of mud she sings over for the most part. I think I might like it a bit better on cd, and I'll give the LP another spin sometime soon to see if I warm up to it. Just as something completely different to move me in another direction for possibly my last spin of the day/week, Shabaka and the Ancestors "We are Sent Here by History" Impulse cd. I LOVE this one. Even more than their first, which I really love. Quote

JSngry Posted July 29, 2022 Author Report Posted July 29, 2022 One of those jazz-flamenco things that is neither fish nor fowl - and is exponentially better because of it! Check it out, it's a pretty good record. Quote
