same old same old... I have most or all of this on various boots on Charly, Jazz Unlimited (I know I know... but their having the Newport gig out that's now "never before released" on one of those new boxes is a bit weird, no?) and other labels, partly even on LP... and the Birth of the Cool stuff has been out on the non-RVG "Complete Birth of the Cool" - stellar stuff, by the way!

As usual, I'd say get the few things that were put out by reputable labels in a store, and get the rest by doing some trades... don't pay the bootleggers! (On the other hand, before I got into trading/bit-torrent circles, I'd have been oh so very glad to lay my hands on something like this...)

Yo, Flurin, I don't disagree with ya. . . but the Newport stuff put out by Columbia is just the one (big moment) track. Then again there was that "Newport and Miscellaneous" release that had all the Newport material on it before, likely the source for the tracks in this box set.

I've decided to translate "Never on cd before" as usually meaning "we've never put this out before. . . or have we?"

United Archives is a French label that takes advantage of the EU 50-year copyright laws! Another one!

Beside the Miles Davis box, they have issued 'Sarah Vaughan - 'The Columbia Years', 'Charlie Parker - 'The Last Years 1953-1954', 'Louis Armstrong - 'The Nice & Philadelphia Concerts 1948-1949' and probably others.

Nothing new under the sun.

Have not checked any of these sets.

I didn't get the 2CD "Round About Midnight" reissue... yes, now I remember one reason why being that it only contained that one big moment track... I never really got that anyway... there's plenty of Miles from 1954 that is better, but the public probably hadn't noticed by then, I assume...

The "Miscellaneous Miles" CD is a good one to have, but I way overpayed it and in the meantime got all the stuff in various forms...

I am sure it's great, but I had the old CD and then got the 6CD Miles/Trane box and don't feel like buying it a third time... I assume the other, longer live date may sound quite a bit better than the version(s) I have, but still... I'd prefer seing them having some real jazz reissue programme, instead of just periodically re-re-reissuing their best selling albums (Miles, Weather Report, Mahavishnu...). At least they got Monk right (great, in my opinion), but then they can't even get Duke right...

Hey, I take what I can get. . . . My expectations of jazz reissue programs diminish as time goes by. The majors are all about the money. They have bigger needs as bigger beasts and overlook the 1% of buyers that we are. The copyright laws. . . well with floods of classic stuff coming in from Europe, we'll hardly see many of these titles from the majors that hold the best sources.

Ah well.

Yes, rebuying is silly. I do it for the stuff I really like, like RAM. . . . I have 99% of the Columbia/Sony Duke (gaps filled in nicely by Chronogical Classics and CSB France) so. . . I'll rebuy it when they get around to it. (The 200th birthday? I'm planning on being around, bionic parts and all.)

That's an interesting package. I don't mind if the title is not correct, as long as the sessions themselves are as complete as the previous official releases.

The box is slightly cheaper at Amazon.fr: http://www.amazon.fr/Complete-Live-Recordi.../dp/B000IXZ7GG/

BTW, "United Archives" is quite an ironic name for a company that simply copies the music from other labels CDs without asking. No need to feel guilty about that though, after the UK Treasury has said the current copyright duration in the EU is appropriate.

  • 1 month later...

Couldn't find this thread in my search, so created a new one needlessly.......anyhow, I'm porting over my comments from that thread about the apparent high quality master material dubbed and taken either with or without Sony France's blessing by a former high level Sony producer would indicate that these aren't just another typical series of bootlegs. The classical sets in the series are from materials that could not be simply cloned from existing releases. So this may be an ethical quandry of some sorts, but I'd be highly curious to get hands on reports about the quality of these sets, since Sony themselves seems unlikely to be issuing this stuff.

There is some good stuff on this box. Some of those Tadd Dameron sessions with Miles were including as filler material on the Bird's Eyes series. Often they ended up being the highlight of the discs. We don't have enough Tadd Dameron on wax.

The Complete Live Recordings 1948 - 1955

This great, low priced 10 CD box of United Archives is very nice designed and has a complete discographical information inside. I will be clear, that the sound quality of the rare live recordings ( some were cut from private tapes, others from airshots) is not always from the same high standards as we like to have today, but I think this set is a must for everybody who wants to study Miles carreer from day to day.

Miles Davis live at the Paris Jazz Festival of 1949

Keep swinging

I agree. Although not complete and having a mediocre to poor sonic quality, the historical significance of the music outweighs the latter....IMO.

I'd be interested to hear whether they did anything notable to the sound quality of the Paris material, as I've made a start on this myself with what I felt was quite reasonable results given the quality of the source:

Before - After - Before (MP3 sample)

It's still some way away, but heading in the right direction. If anyone's heard this set, is it worth continuing on the Paris recordings or have they managed something with it?
