B. Goren.
The Malcolm X Jazz Suite is one of the best CDs I've recently bought. The main reason is of course the beautiful music composed and played by Terence Blanchard. I came to a conclusion that Blanchard is one of the players that I should pay more attention to. But not only Blanchard: the whole quintet is doing a perfect job and specially Tarus Mateen on bass and Bruce Bath on the piano. Four and a half stars on the AMG and I'll add another half of my own to complete the rating to five stars. Absolutely deserves it. The Malcolm X Jazz Suite Edited August 10, 2004 by B. Goren. jazzbo
Hope it's better than "Bounce!"

jazzbo
I don't know what to say. . . "Bounce" bounced in to my player and then out. . . just sort of a "nothing to distinguish it" date for me.
ghost of miles
Didn't Anthony Davis do a jazz opera about Malcolm X?
sal
Tell me about "Bounce!" "Bounce" took some getting used to for me. I honestly didn't like it for a long time, but after hearing one praise after another, I kept giving it more chances. And it paid off. I quite enjoy it now. I find it to be very innovative, and the musicianship is first rate. I wouldn't say it's Blanchard's best, but its definitely a good one that I'd recommend. B. Goren.
Didn't Anthony Davis do a jazz opera about Malcolm X? I'm not sure about Anthony Davis but Archie Shepp recorded a Poem for Malcolm.

ghost of miles
Yes, Anthony Davis DID do an opera about Malcolm. I'd like to hear it some day. Found this web-page about it: LifeandTimesofMalcolmX I think Joe Milazzo once mentioned it to me... does it qualify as "Third Stream"? From the description, sounds as if it does. Michael Fitzgerald
Absolutely I would say it is Third Stream, in fact, it's one of the BEST - most successful at the integration of the jazz and classical elements. No way can you decide which place to file this one. Mike
Alexander Hawkins
I think Howard Mandel talks about the Anthony Davis piece for a few pages in his 'Future Jazz' book (Oxford University Press: New York).
relyles
Malcolm X Jazz Suite may be my favorite Blanchard recording.
Spontooneous
My favorite Terence disc too. Played it again recently, after not hearing it for years, and found it to be even better than I remembered. There's a typo in the credits on the cover. The pianist is Bruce Barth.
