  1. I went to a library sale in my hometown and returned home to find a battered Disc 1 from this compilation jammed into the booklet to the Dizzy disc I bought. I'll eventually have to buy the whole set.
  2. With that lineup being so heavy on beboppers, it is kind of surprising that Cecil Payne wasn't on bari.
  3. Paul Wertico's Mid-East/Mid-West Alliance - Impressions of a City
  4. I am all tapped out anyway, but it hurt to see that Venuti/Lang set for sale and not grab it. I found 5 stray discs in a store for $10 a pop and ended up picking up one disc to try it out. The disc was excellent and the remastering was amazing for a recording of that vintage. I'll track the set down eventually, but someone here made a smart purchase.
  5. That is a great one. Jerome Richardson had TONE for days. I found a used copy a few years ago and discovered that he had signed it and given it to a friend, so that was a nice surprise.
  6. Miles Davis - The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions: I have owned the original CD issue of Workin' for years, but I held off on buying the other albums due to there being this (formerly expensive) box and the RVG reissues. I remember seeing this box in Borders (*sigh*) when it was released for around $50, IIRC. I found it on eBay yesterday for $5.99, including shipping, which is a crazy bargain.
  7. I once asked Steve Davis (a really nice guy, by the way) about Hotep Idris Galeta and he enthusiastically sat down at the piano and played a tune or two of Galeta's. I like Galeta's playing on McLean's live album and Dynasty. Has anyone ever heard Saudade, the Moacir Santos album from this upcoming reissue series? I have been a sucker for his song 'Kathy' since hearing the Horace Silver version on In Pursuit of the 27th Man.
  8. Luiz Bonfa - Solo in Rio 1959: I need to adjust my listening to include regular spins of this. It is flawless.
  9. I am a fan of this album. I remember finding a vinyl copy at a library sale early in my jazz explorations and it indeed making for great 'after hours' listening. I later found it on CD, which doesn't have any personnel listed. However, I found the recording dates of: A1, A5: June 1, 1951 /A2: March 19, 1952 / A3: July 7, 1949 A4, A6: December 21, 1949 / B1: January 10, 1949/ B2: July 27, 1950 B3: September 28, 1949 /B4: September 5, 1950/ B5: April 4, 1951 B6: July 7, 1949 from this review, which you can look up in the Sarah Vaughan discography.
  10. I decided to spin this as well. Now I need to rip Luiz Bonfa's Solo in Rio 1959 so that it is in my Google library.
  11. That is a good one. With Jones, Blythe, Maceo, Smith, Lonnie Plaxico and Idris Muhammad, it is as funky as one would expect. Now playing:
  12. I haven't heard it, but it is limited to 500 copies. I don't think you could go wrong by picking it up, though.
  13. That performance ended up getting cancelled due to weather. I couldn't stay in Detroit for that day of music, but I had planned on watching it via the DJF streaming app. I also was unfortunately only able to catch part of Wayne's quartet (via streaming) on the opening night due to ridiculous seating. Fortunately, however, I did get to see Wayne in person with Leo Genovese (filling in for the late Geri Allen), Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington, which was a fun set.
  14. Marker - Roadwork 2: Atlanta: I am feeling this. The crazy thing about this one is that it probably sold out before its official release date of July 16th, as there were only 40 copies left between sets when Marker played Cleveland on the 9th. I'm glad I snagged a physical copy, but $20 for the download is still a steal for anyone interested in some prime Vandermark.
  15. You guys have reminded me that I should probably get a physical. With 40 a few short years away and my last physical having occurred an embarrassingly long time in the past, I should make an appointment.
  16. Muhal Richard Abrams - Blu Blu Blu
  17. Ornette Coleman - New Vocabulary
  18. Joey Baron - Down Home: This one makes me want to listen to the Frisell/Carter/Motian album, which I haven't listened to in a few years. I wonder if Frisell is still selling the previously unreleased tracks from that session. Edit: The bonus tracks are still available and I finally purchased them.
  19. Congratulations to Ron McMaster on a fine career. Here's to a happy retirement.
  20. Hank Crawford - Wildflower: The baby was being cranky and Hank sung her to sleep. Everyone loves Hank Crawford.
  21. Fabian Almazan & Rhizome: Alcanza: I bought this after an Almazan show last year and the CD-sized download card ended up on a shelf. I finally downloaded the FLAC of it and am enjoying it. He had Linda May Han Oh and Henry Cole with him that day.
  22. Their polls jumped the shark for me when Wynton Marsalis made the Hall of Fame before the likes of Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath and literally dozens of others (like Mobley) who actually deserve it.
  23. Marker - Roadwork 1: New Orleans: I went from Al Haig to this to likely close out the night. This is Vandermark's exciting, young group. With two guitars, violin or keyboard and Vandermark's assorted reeds, the group covers a lot of ground stylistically. I picked up this limited-edition (of only 140) box the other day after catching Marker live. It was on the verge of selling out, but it can still be obtained in download form through Catalytic Sound. They were already performing material that Vandermark had just written the week before and will be returning to the studio today. Vandermark doesn't gather any moss, that's for sure. Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing the whole box set and checking out their future work.
