Thoughts on the Ahmad Jamal Mosaic?
Justin V replied to Justin V's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The set (well, the 2/3 of the set) arrived today. I am looking forward to diving in. -
I miss Toots. I'm glad that I caught him once, in a duo with Kenny Werner. He's one of those musicians who seems to be universally appreciated.
-
From regular checks of Wayne's Facebook page, it appears he hasn't been touring this year, and his only scheduled date is in January. I hope that he adds some dates to promote the release.
-
Joe Henderson's Our Thing and Benny Golson's That's Funky are both MIA here.
-
That is literally the reaction I get. Here he is with his best friend.

Backers of the Namuth Kickstarter project received a download of bonus material as well. IIRC, it ends up being about 100 minutes of material. I need to pull that one out soon. Through the magic of the internet, I was surprisingly able to track down Purnell Rice's widow so she could receive royalties from the Namuth release. Rice was the fine drummer who also played on those excellent Leo Parker Blue Notes. I have never heard a Left Bank release I didn't like, so it'd be a shame if some of the tantalizing shows that took place never see the light of day.

Ah, then it was you. I still haven't met one yet. I have a Treeing Walker Coonhound mix, and most people have never heard of the breed around here. Anyway, I'm glad that your Weimaraner has found the right food and has a buddy.
-
For some reason I thought that you had gotten some kind of rare breed. Well, someone here did, I guess. The Weimaraners I've met are fun. The ones that come into the shelter I volunteer at tend to get snapped up quickly.

Nice pics! The only time I saw Big George was with the similar lineup of Mike LeDonne on organ, Peter Bernstein, George Jr. and Daniel Sadownick, also at the Jazz Standard. Besides being lucky enough to see Big George in the flesh, the food was also excellent.

Ugh. Pet allergies are rough. If you are ineligible for another Prime trial, you should have a friend or family member buy you a bag and see whether it agrees with your dog. If it does, paying for a Prime membership and taking advantage of free shipping might beat having to go to the store and schlep food home. A lot of people in my neighborhood use chewy.com for their pet needs, but I don't know about their prices and shipping rates.

I've sat against the wall right next to the piano the two times I've been to the Village Vanguard (to see Harold Mabern and Tom Harrell). It would've been something sitting there for Barry, too. I'm glad to know he is healthy enough to be out there performing still.

Prime Day sounds like it is pretty much Prime's yearly members' appreciation day. To label that extortion is just silly. Here is the link to more Prime benefits that are being unjustly withheld from you.

Thoughts on the Ahmad Jamal Mosaic?
Justin V replied to Justin V's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Many sets are available through Amazon, Google, etc. as The Capitol Vaults Jazz Series. Some other ones that are available, but not under that series name, are the Johnny Hodges, Oliver Nelson, Gerald Wilson and Gerry Mulligan sets. One way to find them is to search under a particular artist's name and then sort the albums by price from high to low. -
I searched and found a couple of threads about the Ahmad Jamal Mosaic when it was still in the works, but I didn't find a thread dicussing it after its release. Being as I like Jamal and enjoyed seeing him twice but don't have much of his work, I jumped on a partial Mosaic I found on eBay (6/9 discs for 35 bucks). I didn't realize that the set was available for download for a relatively low price, but I should be able to recoup my 35 bucks if I decide to go the download route later. So, what does everyone think of the Jamal Mosaic?
-
The X-75 material from the Henry Threadgill Mosaic. I already had two of the Columbias and couldn't justify buying the entire box, but I at least had the good sense to order the X-75 disc from Mosaic.

I have to chime in with my love for Bossa Nova Bacchanal; Rouse shines in what is (for me, at least) an unobvious context. It is also fun hearing Kenny Burrell alongside Rouse. Burrell and the relatively obscure Chauncey Westbrook, whose solos make me lament his slim discography, work well together. I'm glad that Blue Note got around to reissuing it as a Conn.

Women Feeds Shark, Gets Dragged In

This reminds me of a passage from a textbook on critical thinking. The book would have short examples of lapses in critical thinking. One read something like, 'Having encountered a bear in the national park, a woman smeared honey on her child's hand in order to take a picture of the bear licking the child. Failing to understand this, the bear ate the child's hand.' The story still saddens and horrifies me 15 years later. -
Ugh. That isn't a very flattering portrayal of the board, as it makes the average Organissimo member sound like a close-minded old fart who is out of touch with the current scene. It's an odd approach to post in the thread in March only to pop back in 4 months later to try to direct people to such a blog post.

I thought for some reason that he was 10-15 years younger. I unfortunately missed seeing him in Pittsburgh four years ago. I'll have to listen to Coronary Trombossa! soon and check out more of his music. Thank you, Mr. Watrous, and rest in peace.

$100 OR BEST OFFER - SAM RIVERS MOSAIC BOXSET
Justin V replied to tjluke68's topic in Offering and Looking For...
That is a steal of a price on that Bunny Berigan set. If anyone has been at all curious about the set or Berigan, you can't go wrong for $85. -
I missed the news of his death. RIP.

It may be innocently intended as an homage to Verve, but I remember thinking the same thing when I first heard of the group years ago. I think that it'd be best for them to operate under a different name instead of one that benefits from the Verve name, which just comes across as a bit dishonest. Of course, there is the Blue Note in New York (and other locales) which has released albums under the Half Note label, while not being affiliated with either Blue Note Records or the old Half Note club, so . Then again, Vandermark has the Resonance Ensemble, which no one would mistake for a Resonance Records house ensemble...

FS: Herbie Hancock Ticket (6/27 in Grand Rapids)

I am bumping this up and am asking $50 now. -
I haven't read his books or seen his more popular shows, but I did enjoy The Taste, which had teams comprised of professional chefs and home cooks being mentored by the likes of Bourdain and other respected chefs. He seemed to enjoy life so much, so his suicide comes as a shock. Rest in peace, Mr. Bourdain.
