    Nina Simone

I really would like to know what Mingus said about Simone. Anyone else out there know?
  5. actually, the latest offer is: Buy One, Steal One, Get Off With Time Served
  6. Somewhere, overweight people, Just like me, Must have someplace where folks don't count every calorie. Somewhere, over the rainbow, Way up tall, There's a land where they've never heard of cholesterol. Where folks can eat just what they want And still be trim and slim and gaunt, You'll find me- Where every little thing I taste Won't wind up showing on my waist, Or worse-behind me. Somewhere, overindulging is divine. If their waistlines aren't bulging, Why then, oh why does mine? If bluebirds weighed as much as I You'd see some big fat bluebirds in the sky
  7. Will is great, and there was a recent interview with him on Jazz Wax.
  8. I prefer Haagen Dazs.
  9. if I was a promoter in a situation like that, and if it was NOT in the contract, I woulda told him to take a walk - there's too many enablers in the world. on the other hand, the piano thing was probably in the contract.

    Bird's nest

beautiful story, especially about the guy who fell down and started to cry.... makes me think about a conversation I had with Al Haig in the '70s - Al thought, first of all, that no one really understood Bird, and that, at the root of his being, he wanted most to just be a family man, but he couldn't make it. Schildkraut told me of conversations he had with Bird in which Parker was envious of Dave's whole family setup, implying that he just wanted to settle down. Never happened, if course, because of too many habits. fascinating stuff. Wish I had that apartment.
  12. turns out that number I found is the 802 Long Island office number, but never fear, I just left him a voice mail -
  13. Cranshaw used to live out near Farmindale, NY (years ago a friend of mine worked at a car rental place he used regularly). So he might be in the book; give him a call. Part 2: I'm pretty sure this is him: Bob Cranshaw 54 Sunnyside Blvd, Ste K Plainview, NY 11803-1517 (516) 576-9436
  14. Monterey Blues
  15. ahhhh. damn, so sorry, so sorry.....
  16. hmmmm....an AA Meeting
  17. thanks, Chris, it's on the way (still loving my MAC, by the way).
  18. what I mean is that the freebie I use - Express Burn - doesn't save a playlist so one can go back and burn the same CD later. I've been dealing with this by saving the CD comps in individual folders, and then dragging them into Express Burn when necessary, which is ok, but more work. Luckily, I found a copy of Toast on Ebay that was un-boxed, for $25 - will see when I get it how well it does, though I have a feeling for what I need it'll be fine (most of the reported problems I see have to do with more complicated applications than the ones I will be using) - I also have Amadeus Pro, which I used for editing - but once again, it does not save playlists, as far as I can tell -
  19. don't know if anybody remembers, but in Ken Burns' Jazz they were showing one of the live films of Louis' Danish concert - I think it was Dinah, and Louis is going along; I say to my wife "wait until you hear this trumpet solo," and JUST as Armstrong starts to put the trumpet to his lips - THEY FLASH TO STANLEY CROUCH SAYING HOW GREAT ARMSTRONG IS! NO SOLO! I almost kicked my TV set, and I would have, if the Three Stooges Marathon wasn't coming up on Turner Classics.
  20. tried I Tunes; too many problems, refuses to burn sometimes. Don't ask me why.....
  21. of course, my favorite advice about playing jazz came from Von Freeman: "Learn your chords and suffer."
  22. I would find a good teacher and learn the classical literature. If I'm hearing correctly, that's one of the reasons Bud Powell's whole conception is so complete and all-encompassing. one you have that down (could take at least a few days) get some good lead sheets and look at how jazz players harmonize tunes. then you're on your own.
  23. anybody else use this? I need something for Mac that will save playlists and burn them to CD. I currently use a freebie shareware but it won't save compilations. I've hear about some problems with Toast.
