I loved Koufax, used to go see him every time he pitched against the Mets, which for him was like shooting fish in a barrel - instant death for the opposition. He also came from the same part of Brooklyn as my mother, Bensonhurst.
-
same thing basically happened to the Dodgers in '62 after Koufax went out on injury. That year was HELL for a Dodger fan. '63, however, redeemed them for eternity.

well, the CIA IS a terrorist organization, from Guatemala to Chile to Cuba - so maybe he was a bit worried about visibility. Who knows? there is a jazz record guy who worked for the CIA - isn't it the guy from from Chiascouro? Or some label like that (however it's spelled) - I think Jazz Wax interviewed him at some point. look, I used to be in the PTA, but I try not to let it get around.

Jackie was a good guy, though his career got torpedoed due to bad management. I spent some time with him when I did a series of gigs with Walter Bishop in Hartford, as Jackie came by every night. I always felt that he was scandalously under-eulogized when he died, but too many people just never saw him play. most interesting thing he ever told me was that, in the 1950s when he was strung out, Cecil Taylor came knocking on his door and wanted to work together. "I sent him away because I felt so lousy, and it was the biggest mistake I ever made. I should have remembered what Bird told me, which was that you listen to everybody."

Distortion: why do some believe this to be aesthetic?
AllenLowe replied to michel devos's topic in General Discussion
I'd have to hear it - I love edgy tube distortion, the sag of that rectifier - but solid state distortion just clips and is ugly. -
What if the first music you heard was Duke Ellington?

I actually think Mercer was the talented one - and Irving Mills. -
these remind of that Warhol film where, the longer you stayed, the lower the price of admission. It's kind of an endurance contest for these, too: 2 CDs by Cale: 1)Sun Blindness Music 2) Eat/Kiss Music for the Films of Andy Warhol $5 each, both for $8 shipping on one is $3, both for $4 shipping paypal - alowe5@maine.rr.com

no problem - will hold one for you. -
two copies of volume 1, were promos that got returned to me; so they are no longer sealed - however, everything is intact, CDs are mint. 9 CDs, $40 each plus $5 shipping CONUS. Will ship to Europe (current flat rate boxes are $15) paypal preferred, alowe5@maine.rr.com

I bought an extra copy of this as a present for somebody who already had it - so it's still sealed. $36 plus shipping CONUS (I figure 6 bucks) - paypal is preferred, alowe5@maine.rr.com

is this tube distortion or solid state? -
my only advice is to do a straight, flat transfer - and then send it to me - there's a lot of ways to improve the sound on these things, just be careful with your average de-noise software. Once it's (badly) processed, you can never get back the original sound without doing the whole original transfer again. Also, good external A to D converters make a major difference.

"The Great Paris Concert" great record, great Ray Nance - and if you know anyone who (still) thinks that Duke doesn't swing, play him this concert version of Rockin in Rhythm/Kinda Dukish. -
What if the first music you heard was Duke Ellington?
AllenLowe replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I was VERY slow to get to Duke - I started listening to jazz in 1968 at age 14, but did not become a Duke fanatic until about 1973 - at first I was all Bird and Sonny Rollins, Ornette and Dolphy - pre bop just did not get to me. Didn't like swing saxophone, etc. Too languid and vibrato-y for me. And THEN - and then I saw Lester Young play his solo on The Sound of Jazz and I got it, the most beautiful solo I ever heard, which opened up that whole era of music for me. One listen to Koko (Duke's) and Blue Serge and I was hooked.
