Yes, let's just lock everything up
AllenLowe replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
finally, Weizen, you're making some sense. of course, being in Maine, where every other sentence is in a foreign language, I understand. My biggest job these days is getting my 17 year old daughter to talk like a New Yorker ("it's not WOTTER that we drink, it's WORTER"). of course, last time I was visited in the night by some Texans, THIS happened: -
everybody should move to Maine - I mean, why should I suffer alone?
-
actually the first time I was in Amsterdam was in 1970 and the place was crawling with hippies and drugs - not that that's a bad thing - and than 1973 and 1988 and again maybe 2004 - radical changes, probably not unlike NYC with gentrification. Lost a lot of its charm. never been to Belgium, but I've seen enough Austin Powers movies to know that I need to avoid the place -

yes, personal attack, intended as such. (he said, patting himself on the back for his honesty) let the moderators delete it as such, as long as they go through the entire realm of such things on this site. (he said, offering up a challenge that none dare accept) as for getting over one's self, Jim, after 34,000 posts of self-contemplation you may want to move out of that glass house you've been living in for some time. -
interesting what Larry says about Amsterdam, which became my favorite city after visits in the 1970s and 1980s but which, at last visit, seemed cold and corporate. as for those Belgians - well, everybody knows how damned evil they are.

aggie, that's a real shitty thing to do - read the rest of the sentence as I actually wrote it - once again, and I don't know if this is a language issue - since you are from Texas, and Jsngry has the same problem - but provocation in and of itself is NOT THE SAME THING AS PROVOKING FOR THE SAKE OF PROVOKING. As I said, I have strong opinions - and they provoke people because they are strong opinions. Not the same thing as yelling "theater" in a crowded fire. -
ah, I had the right idea - but the wrong woman - Larry just sent me an email with her picture:
-
anybody know if Larry's ok? I just did a search and discovered he has not posted in the last week. I assume he's lolling on a beach somewhere with that woman he met in the "I'm hot for jazz critics" chat room.

lost in all of this, of course, was the fact that Kate Smith was a good singer before she became a symbol. -

GoodSpeak made more sense here than 10 Weizens - especially as Aggie87 said, inaccurately as usual, "Allen's comment about him willfully being a provocateur." I never said any such thing. I merely said that, in my case, provocation comes about because I give my opinions strongly - and people respond in like manner, as is their right. End of story - or it would be if people understood that their own anger is often provoked by strong disagreement, not inappropriate comment. My posting of that pic on the Kate Smith was intended purely as humor - I had not a clue, given what I see around here, that it would be cut or cause trouble. And I was not, as I will say for the 87th time, upset so much by the deletion as by the commentary on the reason for deletion. -
I'm so attached to my dog (the one in my pic), and I understand your pain, Berigan. Just gotta, as I'm sure you know, understand that he lived a great and happy life.

"I see no point in being a provocateur for the sake of provoking either. Yawn." ahh, there you go - the strategic 'yawn' becomes the means of slight (and thus deniable) nastiness. And once again you respond to my post without actually having read it. And by citing something which has not actually been said here. -

well, in that case they should call him the extreme-erator. just to add, I actually am in somewhat of an agreement with Aggie 87 about the sexist stuff that shows up here on some threads - however, I need to ALSO add that the picture I posted was not at all sexist. Sexual, but not sexist - there is a difference. -
1) sorry, will have to listen again to Royal Palm - 2) there were two Stovepipes, and truthfully I get very confused telling them apart - though one was named, I think, Sam Jones, and was from the Cincinnatti area (anybody know how to spell Cincy?). The later one actually lived into the 1960s; there's a silent film clip of him playing in what was called Jew Town, the part of Chicago where there were lots of Jewish merchants as well as blues guys playing the streets. as for Dranes, I mentioned this elsewhere, but she was one of the pioneers of the two-fisted boogie piano style; the line goes from her, with some Sanctified detours, to Jerry Lee Lewis.

well, as I said, it wasn't that the picture was deleted, it was the way the deletion was labeled. As for being a provocateur, I plead guilty with several explanations - because truly anyone here with strong opinions knows they are open-season for disagreement (a reasonable and expected thing) and personal attacks - still expected but much less reasonable. A good moderator leaves his personal feelings at the door, like a judge. -

well, these threads, like my old high school chemistry teacher, are like Zombies - you kill 'em and they just come back to life. this one may require a cross, two stakes through the heart, and a gypsy curse to get to sleep. -

I'm feeling good. The weather is nice. The dog is wagging his tail. This is the time of year that I actually like living in Maine. -
interesting, Jim, that you say I was comparing myself to an ILLEGAL immigrant - I simply said immigrant. Thanks for proving my point in this thread; hope you enjoy living in Arizona. as for going public with this - JAW made this public my publicly calling me a pornographer instead of simply deleting my post - so why should I protect his impropriety?
-
sorry, bad advice, Jim. Sorta like telling an immigrant in Arizona to stop complaining and go see Mr. President.

(Racist statement removed)**** please note; I am not calling the poster a Racist. believe me, you would be plenty upset of it happened to you - and it's not the first time, as I posted before, that a similar thing has happened to me on this site. Fine, remove the image - but do not label me in such a way - and yes, maybe things would have just disappeared if I hadn't made an issue of it - but I felt it was too important and potentially destructive to let pass.

that's good, Weizen - your lips moved but JAW was talking - 1) Sexual imagery is forbidden, Dave? where have you been? Ever seen the Sexy Album Cover thread? 2) glad you can make the distinction, Weizen, between JAW saying I posted a pornographic image and calling me a pornographer - so I guess if he posts that I committed a murder, he's not NECESSARILY calling me a murderer -

"Never a great soloist, he idolised Earle Warren" let me just add that Earle was actually a terrific alto soloist - I heard him on many occasions in NYC in the late 1970s and felt he was far superior as a jazz player to Benny Carter - more kick. Unfortunately I've never heard a recording that does him justice.

Chuck Israels Interview
AllenLowe replied to paul secor's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
well, the music needs a kick in the ass, periodically - I understand Israel's position, but the problem is not necesarily that jazz has run its course but that it's a much different animal than it used to be - and those innovations and changes will be coming from, let us say, new directions. Because in a way it's not enough to play well and learn your instrument - that's fine for a specific musician, but the broader requirements of the music are, I think, more complex.
