What are you doing with your records?
AllenLowe replied to blind-blake's topic in Miscellaneous Music
if you can find a reputable dealer they'll usually tell you what it's worth - the best in that respect is our own Stereo Jack, whom I've been dealing with for 20 years or so - Jack is great not only because he's so honest, but he's neither crazy/expensive nor untrustworthily cheap- he knows what stuff is worth and he is completely fair. I've had a local dealer, whom I like personally, just offer me cash for a whole bunch of stuff, thinking I wouldn't do the math; when I did it came out absurdly low, for stuff that was mint, and relatively rare. -

I'm fine, thanks. Just shows the eternal circle of life: sweet basil-maine-Philadelphia Museum of Art-Ron S. kinda cosmic, in that Sun Ra/Philly way -

that is truly one of the most offensive songs written ever. One of the things he "points out" is that Gallo, allegedly because of his progressive views, befriended black prisoners - well, it turns out that he was recruiting them as hit men. It was a black guy who shot Joe Gambino (at Gallo's behest) and it was remarked, at the time, how unusual this was for a mob hit. Basically it gave Gallo deniability. I lost a lot of respect for Dylan after that one - and then of course, after Hurricane Carter was re-convicted in a new trial (that was horribly biased; same judge, same tainted evidence) Dylan, like a lot of other celebs, didn't have the guts to stand by him (though he was later released). I find all of this to be the worst kind of political dilettantism.

well, strange coincidence du jour - on another thread here, about professionalism in musicians, I JUST posted about a semi-well known pianist who stood me up for a Sweet Basil gig in NYC about 17-18 years ago. Well, Philly residents, said pianist is playing TONIGHT at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. If you attend, please tell him that I am still waiting for a call -

Professionalism among sidemen. Passe?
AllenLowe replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Musician's Forum
musicians often have no sense in this way - I got stood up years ago by a pianist I had booked to work a Saturday afternoon at Sweet Basil - certainly a good and high-visibility gig that paid fairly. No show, no call. This same guy, who is semi-well known, was the kind of guy who was always protesting in interviews that he couldn't get any recognition, and whose career has definitely been less than what it should have been, given his talent. Well, now I know why. -

how is that book? Haven't heard of it before. -
the Gate was a great place - I saw the original National Lampoon Show there with Belushi, and Phineas Newborne's last public appearance.

I recommend, to everyone here, to wipe everything you own and re-format it with Vista.************* *******disclaimer: person making this suggestion has been running a fever for 4 days and cannot be held responsible for any remarks posted while under the influence of various pharmaceuticals -
there apparently exists a 1970s radio interview that she gave - I have been unable to locate it. Anybody have a source, by any chance?

Swine Flu. Anyone here come down with it?
AllenLowe replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
well, I just asked the doctor to phone me in some codeine - gotta get more than 3-4 hours sleep at a time. plus, I figure I can make some extra cash selling it at the local schoolyard. -
I don't have the book, but I should grab it, as I remember pretty well what the place looked like.

listen to the suites on the OJC - he plays great; also, in the later years, on tenor, he had almost a Rollins-ish sound.

well, feeling MUCH better - actually slept for 6 straight hours, though the wife slept in another room so my coughing wouldn't keep her awake (at least that's what she told me) - the cough is better but persistent, arrghghghghgh! -

yes, the cough - -
well good, that makes three. What I like about these is that she seems a little less mannered than on her early stuff.

she is one of my favorites - I was astounded to learn that she lived in NYC until her death in 1985 - and damn, she sounds absolutely great on these - better than in the '30s, IMHO -

I actually do remember paying an entree fee, circa 1969 (I was seriously underage - 15). A few years later, in college, I actually ran into one of the guys who ran the door and he was quite funny about listening to Mingus' rants: "He kept telling us it was our fault that we were white."

"On 2 seconds reflection, do not contact Allen Lowe." hmmm.... not sure what THAT meant. Still, you have company with this problem. Strange thing is, when I deal with musicians who are MUCH busier than the local guys (Matt Shipp, Ros Rudd) and who are 300 miles away, I know I can always count on them to keep the date, or let me know as soon as there's a problem. (Shipp, by the way, indicated that he has experienced similar things). I have been rehearsing a band for about 2 months with some moderate success - they love the music, and they seem surprised that you can actually play creative music in this part of the world. Truly, I'm not optimistic that we'll hold it together, but I've got nothing else to do.
