  1. I also wonder if aging increases sensitivity - about a year ago I had four teeth pulled and was given a lot of novocaine, and I felt drugged for a few days - at one point I woke up in the middle of the night, went toward the bathroom, and passed out - fortunately my wife was there and caught me - not to worry, however - as long as I know that Dan Gould wants me dead, I will continue to live, just for spite -
  2. yes I agree with you - my pharmacist is a neighbor and always has good info on drugs, though I didn't ask him on this one - I always think of that Woody Allen movie where he's in prison and agrees to take part in a drug experiment; the only side effect is that he turns into a Hasidic rabbi for 24 hours -
  3. back to the subject - though doctors really deny it, the most accurate info I have ever gotten in regard to drug reactions is the anectdotal stuff on the net - my son has been through a million different things for various conditions, and the doctor always says - "that can't be related" but sure enough I find someone on some bulletin board recounting the exact same experience - I also found one web site this morning with recountings of really horrendous physical reactions to protonix -
  4. Mike - about the Real Book - I understand the problems with it, but I think it's a good thing - personally I learned the idea of chord changes from going through it, generally for the better. As a self-taught harmonist, it taught me how to use the piano to approach "standard" or triadic changes as a complicated but related sequence; it was always useful to compare its changes to original lead-sheet changes. It also gave me good ideas on how to use intervals to re-harmonize (eg. looking at a "G" as many things: the top of an AbMaj7 or as the 6th of a Bb chord or as the 9th of an f chord) - all things which allow huge amounts of harmonic and improviser freedom. I know that there are probably better ways to learn this, but it worked well for me, or at least within my own self-contained system (enough so to receive compliments from both Julius Hemphill and Randy Sandke, so I always felt I was doing something right - and the Real Book was a big push in the right direction) -
  5. by the way, I think part of Flanagan's noncholance was a bit of professional jealousy or, really, pride - as in, 'hey it wasn;t just Coltrane on that record, I'm an important guy too." Tommy was a gentle guy, but he understood his own abilities -
  6. oh, I'm NEVER taking this stuff again - not sure what they will suggest next, but I will call the doctor next week -
  7. always good to see a Larry Kart piece I had not seen before - thanks Larry - vis a ve Giant Steps, I should tell you Jim, about my meeting with Tommy Flanagan about 30 years ago - I said to him, "what was it like playing on Giant Steps?" thinking he would report some great musical epiphany - he said, "it was just a set of chord changes."
  8. slurred speech, chest pains, almost passed out, nauseated, severe leg pain - courtesy, it turns out, of the drug Protonix, which my doctor just gave me for reflux - got back to sleep after a while, but been reading on the net this morning about how bad this thing is for some people - one guy said his symptoms were so bad he started going to a shrink, only to have also his symptoms disappear as soon as he stopped taking Protonix - hope he got his money back (from the shrink, I mean) - anybody here had similar fun with this drug?
  9. don't forget "The Big Heat" (while we're on movies with the word "Big" in the title) -
  10. of course there's the old Sam Goldwyn-ism: "an oral agreement isn't worth the paper it's printed on."
  11. listen to all the "minor complexes" - jazz nirvana -
  12. listen to all the "minor complexes" - jazz nirvana -
  13. I had the pleasure of meeting two Organissimo-ites in person this last weekend - it was definitely better than a sharp stick in the eye - depends, of course, on how sharp the stick is - but I thankLarry Kart, who mentioned this place a few years ago to me - and who has probably been cursing himself out ever since -
  14. GOTTA HEAR THOSE STORIES! she's great in the movie Loving You (atarring The King) -
  15. I refuse to play Monk tunes - too personal - years ago I appeared in a Monk tribute concert and I just played standards that I'd heard him do and which effected me greatly - Just You Just Me, You Are Too Beautiful, Tea for Two, It Don't Mean A Thing, More Than You Know - made more sense to me - I have co-sponsored legislation to prevent people from performing Monk's compositions -
  16. somewhere there's probably a Martial Solal version - densely re-harmonized -
  17. I can offer any volume of Devilin Tune, 1-4, for $40 shipped, this month - unfortunately all the super-cheapos are gone, but I have a few at slightly older prices I can move - unlike the oil companies, when I get a price increase I don't apply it to older supplies bought at lower prices - prefer paypal, my paypal address is alowe5@maine.rr.com
  18. actually I don't think that and I heartily agree - this is about the only place on the net that I go to the trouble to keep up with any more -
  19. I still think he's laughing at us -
  20. are you making fun of us?
  21. at least Miles didn't try to put his name on Round Midnight -
  22. fun? where's the fun?
  23. seriously, ask Barry Harris - he always used to say that everybody played the whole tune incorrectly -
  24. MAC users need a prophylactic for that Trojan -
