"I would avoid it if you absolutely hate smoking hot salsa infused rock, and hearing (whenever you feel like it) perhaps one of the defining performances of the era/genre." that's EXACTLY why I'm avoiding it -

Operation Homecoming; The Old, Weird America
AllenLowe replied to Adam's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
sorry, Adam, if I'd known this was your project I would have watched it - gotta admit that I find the whole domestic/war situation so depressing that I don't know if I can watch anything about it - it flashes back to the Vietnam war and the lemming-like willingness of Americans to let their sons become cannon fodder. Where I live 2 soldiers have been lost in the last month or so - South Portland, Maine - and I see the flags waving and the funeral processions and I say to myself, they never learn; give them another war and they'll send the next generation to die for nothing (though they'll never get my son, who just turned 19; we've already gotten a few calls from recruiters whom I've yelled at); even worse, of course, is the situation for Iraquis and their children, about whom nobody seems to care - (by the way, this is not by ANY means a criticism of your documentary subject; there's plenty of victims to go around here) - so I apologize as, politically, I'm in something of a hibernation mode. -
it was Billy Mitchell - never mind -

hey Dan, I haven't gotten my CDs yet - hey, maybe that's because I didn't order any -
-
that definition makes sense - on the other hand the image I have is of chords played with intervals that are not "exact," so to speak, in which the sound of the chord is given implicity with somewhat disordered intervals -

am I confusing Franks even more, or didn't he make a few albums for Xanadu? Great player, if that's the one, now dead, I believe, and was widely considered to be very difficult personally - unless of course I am thinking of a different Frank altogether (Barney Franks? Frank Sinatra? Frankie Lymon?)

jewel boxes for $1? what do you think we are, millionaires? hey everybody, I'll sell them to you for 99 cents -
-
he MIGHT mean that they are not exact triads, maybe odd inversions - I'm actually not sure, but I can email Loren to ask him - though I'm not sure if I can do it for a week or so, as I'm going out of town soon - can you give me the full paragraph?

Metheny-Mehldau in the NYTimes
AllenLowe replied to 7/4's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
jim - it's the tube amp but not just the tube amp - add the the volume boost in front of the amp, the mulitple gain stages, the use of master volumes - and tube-screamer like distortion pedals so they can distort at low volumes - the results are glossy all-sound-the-same tones caused by bad conversions from analog to digital and back again, not to mention bad new production vacuume tubes that are harsh and and have too much gain - -

well, I don't think any jazz guitarists use real distortion - more likley digitally modeled distortion - and this is one of my biggest complaints about jazz guitar in general, but not just jazz guitar, also most rock guitar as well - players have lost the direct sonic connection between string pressure, pickups, tube compression, and speaker, have lost that wonderfully varied sound of people like Pat Hare and Junior Barnard. It just ain't the same thing anymore, unless you are me and - sorry no freebies you'll haved to buy the cd - and recording with nice low powered tube amp circuits - -

Taiyo Yudens and Taiyo Yudens only - lowest error rate, and I have burned literally thousands with nary a glitch - I used to make a living at it, and they were the ones I used. No discounted CDR is worth it - and the Taiyo Yudes are cheoap on the spindle from NRS in NYC -

New book by Lorraine Gordon
AllenLowe replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
"Also, Lorraine was a pretty hot lady IMO or as far as I can tell" ahh, I don't know if you remember a little anecdote I posted a few years back, though I probably should not have, Larry; I'll shoot you a private email about it. Quite funny stuff, based on a story I was told by Curley Russell. I'd post it here again, but it's probably not a good idea, though it may be in the archives. I got to know Lorraine a little bit in the late 1970s when she was booking Jabbo Smith and used to come with him and to hear him at the West End Cafe. We had some mutual friends, and I loved Jabbo (who had the most beautiful singing voice I have ever heard, I kid you not; a pity that he was never really recorded appropriately in this way; also, on a good night he could play some nice chord changes, though his range was limited) - she was/is a character, and we always wondered what was going on between her and Jabbo, who was around 75 at the time. A friend of mine (a pretty female) went over to Jabbo's apartment one day to help him clean; when Lorraine found out, she got very upset and territorial, and made sure that friend never got near Jabbo again. I liked her and I liked Max's book on the Vanguard; will have to check this one out - -

actually, I have 750 copies of the Dave Schildkraut CD- and about 1,00 copies of my own - -
absolutely - and he walked that fine line expertly - I have a phrase that I repeat too often, which is that there is a difference between mannerism and style - and I think Shavers is a good example of the difficulty, sometimes, presented to the critic and listener in distinguishing the two -

I wouldn't worry about a Mingus threat, as apparently he threatend to kill everyone at one time or another -
-
I love Shavers, but watrching some of these clips I do think that there is a stylistic confusion in his playing which is sometimes appropriate, sometimes not - he was certainly entitled to throw in a little Dizzy, a little Roy and a little Louis, beause he knew how to do it well - but there are times I want him to settle on something - the mix of styles can work, a la Jaki Byard, but sometimes it becomes just a mix and not a whole - on the other hand, as Larry has pointed out, the Hawk track is great; and as soon as I go home tonight I'll check out that Dorsey clip -

"On the other hand, the 'Warne Marsh Lee Konitz Quintet: Live at the Montmarte: Storyville' is gone, on its way to Madrid with three more, right?" actually, I have a little Producer's scam going on - going to sell each CD 3 or 4 times - -

also this one is back: Lee Konitz meets Jimmy Giuffre. 2 CD, Verve. This one's got scuffs but is pretty rare. $25. -
what confused me was remembering Dan Morgenstern remarking that because of the proximity of the two deaths, Shavers got virtually no attention -

here's what's here: Barry Harris live in Concert - French CD reissue of Xanadu LP; lots of scuffs but plays fine - $6 Tim Berne: Caos Totale: JMT - scuffed, plays well: $6 Warne Marsh Lee Konitz Quintet: Live at the Montmarte: Storyville. Not too badly scuffed. Plays great. $8 Gunther Schuller: Jumpin in the FUture. GM Scuffed, plays good. $5. -
forgot about the Hawk session, which is great - I believe Shavers died on the same day as Louis Armstrong, which was unfortunate in more ways than one - correct me if I am wrong -
