yes, exactly - at that time the 802 book had a lot of phone nmbers of people who were otherwise impossible to find - I think, since than, they've stopped publishing a lot of the numbers. That was also how I got Dizzy's number in New Jersey. He did not ask me, however, how I got it, and was actually willing to talk once he found out I knew Dave and Al Haig - -

it was a funny conversation - I was working on a magazine article about Schildkraut, and I had heard that Getz admired him; I got Getz's number out of the Union book and called him - and that's how the conversation went: "Dave could play - how did you get my number?" "He was great - how did you get my number?" "oh, he was one of the best saxophonists I ever heard - how did you get my number?" -
after Bird, that is - and it's not just my opinion: Dizzy Gillespie: "Dave Schildkraut was the only saxophonist to capture the rhythmic essence of Bird." Bill Evans: "There were only two saxophonists who came out of the bebop era who didn't copy Bird: Lee Konitz and Dave Schildkraut. Dave was incredible." Jackie McLean: "Dave Schildkraut was one of my favorite people on and off the bandstand." Stan Getz: "Dave Schildkraut was one of the greatest saxophonists I ever heard...how did you get my phone number?" (from an actual conversation) hear Dave's last recording, "live" in 1978 with BIll Triglia, piano (of Mingus's Tijuana Moods; also worked with Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, Bird, many others), Jeff Fuller, bass (worked with Lou Donaldson for many years), and Frank Bennett, drums (Frank is now a studio drummer in California and can be heard on The Simpsons): Dave Schildkraut: Last Date for the month of April I will sell this one for $4 shipped, first class in a plastic sleeve - paypal only - paypal address is alowe@maine.rr.com email me at that address. I have plenty of copies.

trying to find a cartoonist

still flexible - no response yet - -
My Space has beome so sleazy - full of hookers and sex ads - that I've banned my daughter from it. I do find it particularly amusing that the sleaziest sites and publications (like the Post) are always owned by family values Republicans - and I figure Berigan owns stock with Murdich -

did AM used to sound better back in the day?
AllenLowe replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Audio Talk
"Tubes were only a small part of the equation" gotta disagree - because what I think you are hearing on those old braodcasts is, very specifically, a warmth that pervades even their lo-fi sound - and this, from my experience, corresponds very directly to the use of tubes in the signal path. -
I just enrolled at Network Solutions at someone's suggestion, but have no idea how good it is - anyone else?

trying to find a cartoonist

not bad - I have sent an email to Deep Fried - smart guy, funny stuff. I am looking for someone with a nice sense of noir-ish realism, I would say, but I am not wedded to that concept - if there's anyone I should contact, you can tell me at my email (alowe@maine.rr.com) - or feel free to give anyone my email. Thanks for all the suggestions - -
actually, I think my offer is theologically sound. I had a dream last night in which Berigan came to me and said: "Allen you are the chosen one. Weizen and I view your posts as holy. Go forth unto the mighty Organissimo boards and spread the word of eternal life through the purchase of used compact discs. Ye shall be baptized through the Rovian philosophy of personal profit and Republican economics, the supply side of life. Ye shall be the Berigan-Weizian messenger of paypal righteousness, accounting deviance, and empty promises." and when I woke up, my bedside box of Trojans was gone, someone had drooled on my pillow, and my urine sample was missing from the refrigerator. If those aren't signs of a visit from a Republican/Berigan/Weizian god, I don't know what is. make of this what you will, but I was very shaken by the experience. And even more so, now that I've found out that Larry Kart had the SAME exact dream last month -

well, to paraphrase Jimmy Swaggart, I am glad I am not alone. The jazz thing is funny; I've met a lot of great musicians over the years, and when I truly found them un-likeable it made it very difficult to listen to their music objectively. The other way around, too - if I meet a muscian whose playing I did not previously like, but like that musician personally, I often lose objectivity. of course, the most evil musician I ever met was Sonny Stitt; I still like his playing, but that may be because his craziness was non-personal, he was just crazy - after all, I still listen to my Jeffrey Dahmer records -
