  1. no less an authority thanTeddy Wilson told the pianist Dick Katz, when he was studying with Wilson back in the 1940s, to listen to Monk because he was "a rhythm master" -
  2. wait - now I think we're confusing him with Huckleberry Hound -
  3. yes, everybody knows that Chuck Berry played GUITAR on those sides with Billie -
  4. absolute best, if you can find it, for sound, is the old Herwin LP, mastered by Nick Perls - amazing -
  5. Actually, Barry Harris can do Monk so well it's scary - Barry lived with Monk at Nica's house for the last years of Monk's life, and told me how strange and catatonic Monk had become - the night after Monk died, Barry played at the Angry Squire, a club in NYC, and did nothing but Monk tunes, nailing the voicings, the touch, the lines, everything - wow!
  6. I'm not trying to frighten you, but before you start classes you might want to watch the film Blackboard Jungle - just as a precaution -
  7. I played in a tribute concert to Monk about 20 years ago, and instead of Monk tunes - which I don't feel I do really well - I played standards that I;d heard him perform and that influenced me in the listening: Just You Just Me, You Are too Beautiful, Tea For Two (all on one Riverside, as I recall) - this was much more manageable for me, in trying to channel the feeling I got from listening to him -
  8. nice guys, well meaning (I did some of a blues series for them) but not real adventurous or cutting edge - I would also be nervous as a lot of the older jazz they re-mastered for Rhino was over-procesed and full of audible noise reduction distortion -
  9. I found Paudras's book annoying sycophantic - it's too bad, as I spent a day with him in NYC in 1980, and he was a truly nice guy with good intentions, who was quite knowledgeable about Bud in both personal and musical ways -
  10. do not as agee about Byas, as here was a guy who was as competetive as they come, and who went to the trouble to show up - I will repeat my earlier assertion that he was seriously upstaged, and, as I mentioned, this is supported by what musicians who were actually playing at the time reported as the contemporarty response from other musicians - and Chuck's point about the use of the word "context" is right on the money-
  11. not Mobley psychodrama - just a guy who realized he was significanly upstaged -
  12. exactly, and ironically so, as, at least where I work, older workers have less absences and stay longer in their jobs -
  13. I agree with Francis, as I understand his point - as a matter of fact, clearly Byas agreed as well, as his stage departure was surprising and unannounced. Yes, he was part of the pre-history of bop, but his playing, great as it was, was briefly swept aside in the bop whirlwind - to understand this is to understand the CONTEMPORARY response to the new bebop boys - Joe Albany once pointed this out to me, saying, yes, guys like Hawkins and Lester Young (his examples) were still great players, but in the very immediate flash of the new style, before the dust settled, their playing suddenly seemed very out of date. Of course, as perspective was gained that changed - and much as I l love Sid Catlett, on this date, Max sweeps him away, as well -
  14. thank you for today's non-sequitor -
  15. just glad I could help -
  16. Jim - not a big problem in the scheme of things, I just get distracted here by some of the random nastiness, and than somewhat bothered if I am singled out for doing something that has been done in other threads and places - and note 7/4's very nasty original comment here, his fear of being like me at age 47 - mild, but a nasty little dig just the same - and he advises ME to get a grip. That's a classic tactic, attack the person, and than accuse them of being crazy when they react defensively - I believe, 7/4, that it's called passive/aggressive -
  17. no, I'm 51 not 47 - and are you going to be what? Articulate and well-reasoned? Able to write and speak a complete sentence? Well, no , it's unlikely if you can't do that now -
  18. Jim - we'll have to agree to disagree, but you are completely incorrect that I continued to post garbage after it was clear that it was not spam - as a matter of fact I wrote an email to the creater of the thread apologizing, and than I participated in the discission - the fact that you did not notice this indicates to me that you really did not read the thread close enough -
  19. well, James Brown did say in his first aubiography that he does not like the blues, and that his favorite singer was Bing Crosby -
  20. and furthermore - this thread was essentially hijacked in post 4, not much later than my post in that other thread - further illustrating my point -
  21. and by the way I've tried to hunt down that thread for relevant quotes, but can't seem to locate it in the data base -
  22. Jim, you did say in that thread that only YOU should be the determinant of what is spam - when in earlier threads I had seen other posters here who felt ok in making that judgement - and I absolutely did not get snippy except in response to personal attacks - there really is a cliquish sense around here about what is accepted from some posters and not the others - and this thread was quite clearly hijacked - with plenty of "jabber" that is as irrelevant as what I posted on that other thread - so I think this proves my point - -
  23. and those of us who paid for the first batch should get a discount (actually I got 'em free as review copies) -
  24. Dan - the thread I was referring to was the one about putting LPS onto DVD - but anyway, I was just pointing out an inconsistency, and it is something I see here, for better or for worse. I mean, I was treated as an internet leper, as in how dare I hijack the thread? At any rate I think this is an appropriate place to ask these questions, as many of us are past the middle-aged mark - and thanks, Jazzbo, interesting stuff - how about if I ID you in the book as "Jazzbo, USA" (just kidding) -
  25. I want to add something very interseting here - I love this site but do feel it's cliquish and has many instances of a double standard - and what has happened to THIS thread is a perfect example, as it is now unrecognizeable from my original post and topic - when I did a similar thing to another thread, and completely changed the topic, I was vilified and criticized for daring to do so by even the head honcho on this board - funny how nobody seems to object now, since you guys are all pals. Now, that other thread had slightly different circumstances, but even those exhibited the double standard - I had seen several previous instances when posters here attacked someone's thread as indicaing spam. I did so on that other thread, though I later apologized for being incorrect. But I was attacked not just for being wrong, but for even trying to make that judgement - interesting place this is -
