  1. I was in Kürten, Germany when this thread was active and I'm sorry that I missed it - didn't seem to generate a whole lot of response - but I love(d) this album. I went thru many copies. Yes, No Motion Picture was definitely the standout track. The quick repeating bassline with that water-like sound of drops - absolutely mesmerizing piece of composition. two cents worth...
  2. Mark? I think you read my post wrong - try it again. Bey is definitely a jazz vocalist!
  3. Same here. I have to concentrate to hear vocals in any kind of music. I actually have a preference for vocal music in another language, as to not be distracted by the words. I know that may seem silly, but that is how it is. I just find it easier to attach to the emotion purely as sound. ← Not silly. I'll take great "sounding" vocals in another language or even "nonsense"/experimental vocals over most bland English language ballads.
  4. Oh yeah... Kinda like going swimming with a paralyzed fish... ← HAHAHAHAHA! I'm still more of a "sound" guy - I like unique sounding voices...like Dakota Staton or Andy Bey and, yes, he's not "jazz", but I love Kevin Ayers' voice too. I melt into a pool of goo when I hear Sarah Vaughan - I cannot do anything else when her voice comes out of the speakers - life goes into suspension. I adore her. Strong vocal dislikes: Sheila Jordan... and this annoying trend that's been going for a coupla decades of singing like one's in a heroin-induced stupor - a la Rickie Lee Jones.
  5. I have to agree - the Columbia LPs just didn't live up to the A&M stuff.
  6. Lee Michaels "greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeazzzy"? Uh, no. ← OK, so we come full circle!
  7. Absolutely incredible! I even have some of these albums!, but never made the connection - even here in Texas!
  8. WOW! Thanks for that! I had no idea he was still around! It probably came up in conversation one time around the late 80's and I don't remember the source who said he had died as a result of his weight... Anyway, I gotta look at his site some more! thanks!
  9. With a name like Bartholomew Frost Smith, I think I'd go with "Frosty" too. Found him on a Butch Hancock album too, but don't know if it's the same "Frosty" I don't know if there's really a "story" - just a damn good drummer (who just happened to be huge). I used to practice "that" drum solo over and over - it sounded so "composed" and very well thought out, but still motivated by a funk/rock sensibility. Kinda hard to describe really. Those were my favorite solos in those days - ones that didn't give the apperance of showing off - well, too much anyway... but it's kinda hard to explain how I could fit him in with Bennink and Altschul way back then, but it seems that my drum teachers were OK with it anyway...
  10. So, are we calling this greeeeeazzzy or not?
  11. Wow! Thanks for that! Whattaguy!
  12. Ha! Yes, I remember hearing about this collection coming out. About 10 years ago, One Way Records put out his first 7 albums and I suppose that they just didn't sell enough or maybe the label is gone... don't know, will probably go check this now. The medley would be great to have, but I still have a soft spot for the drum solo (that, apparently, was just too "70's" to leave intact). I think Frosty's dead - he really was a huge guy!
  13. We're on the same page THERE! I don't think it's on CD, but there's a Lee Michaels collection that has "Tell Me How Do You Feel" on it - worth it, I'm sure. ← I think Stormy Monday and Heighty-Hi were the "hits", but I just loved the first side with the very subdued (sub-dude?) drum solo from "Frosty"! (On Amazon, there's a copy for $100 - )
  14. Wow, forgot about them! I'm gonna have to refresh...
  15. I remember really liking this album when it came out:
  16. Yeah, exactly!! I wondered about that too! If I were paying that price, I'd want to be able to frame that cover!
  17. Agreed! This reminds me of people who spend a thousand dollars on a fountain pen or some such thing that you could easily buy for almost a hundredth of that cost...cRaZy I suppose it's good if you're the seller tho!
  18. Yup, a bit steep but I think if the fear of recording live gigs dies down some, then we may see more of these pop up at more reasonable prices. The M3 has a built-in mic that I use for environmental recording (@128 kbps) and imputs that are great for off-board stuff (328kbps or WAV). With a 40 GB HD, it's amazing how much stuff you can fit. After recording many hours daily for a full month in July/Aug, I had only used 3.5 GB of space. It's also a kind of alternative to the iPod and has a built in radio for use worldwide. Heard good things about the new iAudio X5 too! Amazon seems to be out but there's nice reviews: Cowan iAudio M3
  19. SECOND! Good for you. ← Thanks! When the wife would leave town, I'd immediately start driving hers and my '93 Corolla would sit in the garage. So, at 3:30 today I pick up the second Prius and we'll try to find a good home for the Corolla - probably a student who wants a "well taken care of" car with a major sound system -
  20. Just a mention (with some comments) - not a review: MicroTrack used to be called the Flash Tracker: Flash Tracker
  21. Yeah, battery life is definitely a consideration. Overseas trips have me away from recharging for many hours at a time. My M3 gets 16 hours and the M3L is supposed to get 35 hours, but I've heard that 28 is more accurate. Still like the preamp idea. I mentioned earlier a great site for reviewing these DAPs - excellent, essential site: DAPreview
  22. They're certainly moving in the right direction with this. I've had my iAudio M3 for a couple of years now and even tho it's been tremendous when it comes to recording quality, I've wished for a built-in preamp which this MicroTrack seems to have. Not sure if I like the external storage idea, but anyway... Thanks for this link. I'll explore the specs carefully.
