  1. Hahahahaha! I think I'll take my "Buddha and Bennie" over "Bubbas and Wayne." Maybe the band was caught off guard too?
  2. I remember the days when there were no commercials - when it was known as "Educational TV."
  3. I think I did too - and that's what I mean! (and it wasn't this):
  4. This was Maurice White's band! Great stuff! Jim, are you raiding someone's funk crate lately with Cymande and this?
  5. ...and the pictures are where?
  6. Let's have Christiern comment on the PBS jazz program he was responsible for over 30 years ago. I will remember that series until the day I die - absolutely incredible! - Maybe today it may not have the same impact, but, especially for a youngster interested in the creative arts, it left a big imprint... BUT we have nothing like that now - no creative music programming that anyone can turn the TV on and see. Now, we find delight in seeing a cattle call of performers whereby the really most interesting things to see are the amazing quickness of the stagehands trying desperately to meet the 5 minute deadlines. If only Chris' series were available on DVD - hell, I'd take VHS, kinetoscope...
  7. I started somewhere in the middle. I'm sorry that I missed Herbie (and did Sonny really play?) Tried to stay with as much as I could, but I was having a hard time staying awake. Dull-dull-dull, but glorious in it's dullness! First time I've heard Wynton in many years and I'm just amazed at how awful he was - after all of these years and still some kind of jazz icon? I applaud the relief effort, but how about putting his horn down and start picking up a pen and start writing his jazz history that he seems to want to perpetuate (or maybe a series of pedantic lesson books). Tavis Smiley is talking to Cowboy Carl now. I think it's time to go to bed.
  8. NONE...unless you only like listening to André Rieu...
  9. Wow! So he hates all three of those type people. Doesn't leave much room for anyone else.
  10. Yeah, that Harley was a gas! but I'm telling you that hum-a-zoo that Bennie Maupin plays really WORKS during Hornets.
  11. So Thom Jurek was right?
  12. I think David's a Crowleyist.
  13. I didn't know I missed 377777. Damm. ← Your post was ##413131. Does that make up for it?
  14. Buster Williams/Bennie Maupin
  15. I think Facing You would be a favorite for me too, but I'll take Cecil or Mischa when it comes to solo outings.
  16. Gotta check the frequent flyers for this one!
  17. Yeah, Common Mama!
  18. No doubt funky! His work with Miles! BUT, we all know his attitude about that side of his playing! Too bad really. I have to say that I still L-O-V-E the Fender Rhodes, but Jarrett is not the first person I reach for when it comes to that - mellow or funky.
  19. After "Facing You" and the Bremen/Lausanne concerts, my mom bought this for me back in high-school days. It seemed to complete the triad, but I got real tired of him afterwards - it seemed to go downhill from there. It became "fashionable" to own this recording - kinda like having John Klemmer's "Touch" LP. After that sonic organ mess that came out a couple of years later, I was expecting him to start oozing over any keyboard-based instrument he could (or couldn't) handle. Got yerself a harmonium? A hurdy-gurdy? A clavichord? (Alas, the clavinet was too funky for him tho). Well, Keith would be knockin' on yer door soon! In '78, when the maintenance man at my apartment complex broke into my apartment and stole my turntable (among other things), I was blessed that "Hymns/Spheres" was still on it.
  20. I know the feeling. The coupon was the only reason I went yesterday.
  21. After that 5 Disc Bluebird set, I'm wondering if I should get this Rounder collection...hmmm...
  22. Oh, man Dan. Don't get bummed about 40! Forty is that great time when you have that perfect combination of young at heart without a great abundance of naiveté. (tho, you still need some... ) Most of the people that I've grown up respecting did their best work after they had 40 years to formulate them. Yeah, we had some great musicians who did great work before dying at an early age, but I can't help but think what Trane, for instance, might've accomplished if he continued his growth long after 40. Or Brownie, etc... Forty, in many ways, is a great time to start from zero using the ideas that you've formed up to that time. I think that when you hit 50, that's the time to reassess what you've done the previous 10 and see how you feel about how your life's going. Forty was a great "cleansing" time for me. I was actually looking forward to it and have made the most of my forties creatively ever since. Forty's the best! (50 is second best - )
  23. I'm with vibes on this - If I'm gonna use these coupons, I have to find something or a place better than what I've already seen. The boxsets are locked up behind a window - can't touch them - can't see the prices on many of them...sheesh... It's funny that the 30% coupon says "void if copied" The 25% one adds "Any other use constitutes fraud" if you go beyond one per day. What? Will you get stopped by the "Border(s) Patrol"?
  24. The very same! Xmas three months early!
