  1. I found his autobiographical volumes, Little Wilson and Big God and You've Had your Time fascinating. Of course, the fact that he was from Manchester was of special interest to me - he had the "look" of people from round here. Saw him once arriving in a limo with his exotic Italian wife for a book signing.
  2. How about "stercoraceous"? "The stable yields a stercoraceous heap" (William Cowper, The Task 1785)

  8. Yes, Shorty's on record as having Sweets as an idol in his youth, and he certainly engaged him often enough for his sessions. I think there's some Dizzy in there, too, despite the cool timbre you note. Shorty played far too many notes to be significantly a Miles follower, though "Birth of the Cool" was a huge influence on his arranging, of course.

  10. Another vote for this one; the most interesting of his big band dates (at least as far as I have heard). Fine album, but not to be compared with Cool 'n Crazy or the Herman and Kenton orchs playing Rogers charts IMHO.
  11. Like it or not, the weather in Britain has become a big political issue. It's the politicians who have done this. That said, it's quite nice here today. Not too cold, not too windy, a hint of rain - and a hint of sunshine!
