To my ears the sound on the TOCJs is better than the Mosaic (in comparison), but that doesn't mean the sound on the latter is not acceptable, given the quality (or lack thereof) of the recordings.
-
Hard to argue with that. I've heard a lot of complaints about the sound vis a vis the TOCJs (which I don't have). Is that true? ← Yes, the sound on the TOCJs is definitely better.

Yes, David, thank you. As you probably know Mosaic's overseas shipping rates are very high; my "all-in European price" is lower, so this might be of interest to European members - that's why I posted it here. ← And there is no risk of having to pay customs tax. ← Exactly.

The next Mosaic to go is the Lee Morgan 1950s Blue Note set, but that one'll go straight to eBay.

FS: Japanese Chet Baker & Crew mini-LP CD
J.A.W. replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Offering and Looking For...
The CD is gone. -
Thanks for the info, Hans! I assume that disc was filled with the session that is part of the Select? Or with at least those three cuts Lion/Cuscuna had plans on releasing? ← The latter - the other three tracks on Easy Living, with Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and Bennie Green on trombone, are: See See Rider Congo Lament Que's Pill
-
Got your e-mail, Flurin, thanks. The Quebec quartet-only tracks were issued on Easy Living, Blue Note ST-84103/Toshiba TOCJ-4103; recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio on January 20, 1962 personnel: Ike Quebec - tenor saxophone Sonny Clark - piano Milt Hinton - bass Art Blakey - drums Tracks: I've Got a Crush on You Nancy Easy Living

Listening to my Sony CFD-6 boom box right now...

To my ears, yesterday, what you describe was a good thing! In a way, this disc reminds me of an old-fashioned blowing / cutting session: a big group of horn players all trying to out-blow each other on consecutive solos. This album is sort of the european free improv version of Johnny Griffin's A Blowing Session. Definitely not what I always what I want to hear but, when I am in the mood for it, it really hits the spot. ← Same here; Tony's comment sounded like a positive review to me... ← Except for the thumbs down comment, I guess John's comment pretty much described how I used to feel about most of Brötzmann's albums, but they're increasingly boring me now and they'll probably end up in my sale thread elsewhere on this board...
-
I had this set back in my vinyl days, and as far as I can remember it's not bad. I'd get it if I were you, especially if you can get it at a good price. ← Errr... No guarantees, of course

You've described exactly how I'm feeling about most of Brötzmann's outings nowadays... Thank you!

That has become very evident from your posts...

I don't copy mine. I'm selling CDs because I don't want them anymore.

question about the Sonny Stitt set
J.A.W. replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I agree that the sound on this Mosaic could have been tamed a little, though to my ears the overall mastering is good. On the other hand, taming Stitt's sometimes piercing sound might not have done it justice; I don't know, I've never heard him live either.
