  1. I don't think I'd be exaggerating if I thought that the majority of my age group has that Nirvana Unplugged session imprinted forever in their memory. It was certainly a strong performance.
  2. Thelonious Monk Plays Ping Pong
  3. Mulgrew Miller plays Andre Previn
  4. Notice the guy in the bottom left corner with the helmet on! I haven't ever seen Nirvana, I haven't ever stage dived, and I haven't ever worn a helmet to a show. Still, those lyrics are not written by Cobain. I'm just saying... www.nirvanafreak.net article on In The Pines
  5. What is ghost percussion?
  6. Nice! They have some more big gigs on the horizon, including Lincoln Center this summer. Looks like they'll be in Ontario, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio soon as well.
  7. You do realize that you picked non-Cobain lyrics, no? Can you pronounce Leadbelly? Seriously, even the Grateful Dead was covering this in their early years. edit: I see Noj picked up on this already...
  8. I realize I have started a few threads announcing shows up and down the East Coast, but I thought I'd start a thread of its own. Seems like there are a good amount of people on the board that would like this band. My brother has been playing bass with these guys for the past few years. If they are in your area, go check them out. A bona fide hard working salsa band. I haven't checked the website in a while, but it looks like they just did an EP with John Fausty, plus photos from their recent trip to Puerto Rico. Who knows, maybe Clem was down there and had the TV on when they played: www.bioritmo.com
  9. Great recommendation. x2
  10. Good call! I'll be pulling that one out soon. Has it been remastered recently? Blues & Roots.
  11. If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading that he was actually the leader on that date. Sort of a Somethin' Else kind of thing. Thanks for the list though. The type of music he is playing on Davis Cup, or Cool Struttin' is a long way from Evolution and even the later Lee Morgan dates.
  12. Yes! Very much like Dolphy. I think a lot of the "speech-like" qualities that people attribute to Dolphy's improvising come directly out of this attempt to play phrases that muscle memory almost prohibits. I hear the same effort in Jackie McLean's improvising more than every once in a while.
  13. This has become a recent favorite of mine. I only first heard it within the last year, so the music is still pretty new to me. Fantastic music. I agree. Elmo Hope is definitely up there with Bud Powell, Herbie Nichols, Thelonious Monk, and another recent discovery for me, Horace Silver Trio. I just can't enough of these guys' music.

  15. You mean Randissimo?
  16. What I have noticed most this week when listening to this, and Action for that matter, is that it sounds like Jackie is really taking some chances on some of his phrases. More than a few times, I feel like he suddenly finds himself playing something entirely spontaneous, really reaching past his own memory. Some of the "licks" that he throws out there are so soulful and personal that I feel like I can hear his vulnerabilty for a split second, in the waiver of a note, or a slight rest to accent the note that follows. Incredible stuff, and not something I notice everyday.
  17. Sinking feeling. I don't have the history with McLean's music that a lot of you have. I can remember reading some pretty incredible accounts here about hearing his albums on the day they were released, seeing him in his youth, etc. I was fortunate enough to see him play in NYC a couple of years back with Grachan and Hutch, and it was a phenomenal experience. I will always remember that night. There was something about Jackie's showmanship, a certain respect that he had earned over the years, and the way he handled himself, his band, the audience in that room that I really appreciated as much as anything. He was just being himself. Thanks to David's Record of the Week, I have been spinning Destination Out!, Action, and A Fickle Sonance a lot this week.
  18. This does look promising. Do you have many others from 577?
  19. Hamilton Burger Burger King BB King King Missile King Crimson Crispin Glover
  20. Yeah Jim, I liked the sound of it. I will certainly buy a copy of your album. FYI, CDU shows this selection as backordered... that's a good thing right?!
  21. I have the four disc Rhino Otis box set, which I absolutely love. Great for hot summer nights. Thanks for the Stax Box recommendation. I should save up to get that before this summer.
  22. I think its high time I dig down into the Stax/Volt material. Keep the recommendations coming!
  23. Note to self: When topic is titled "Possibly the Worst Thing I've Ever Read", DO NOT OPEN.
  24. Paul, Did you mean RAW BLUES by Johnnie Taylor? 1969, with BT & the MGs?
  25. Trader Joe's is a grocery store, isn't it? I know they're in Boston. Kind of like a Whole Foods? Looks like that's been covered already. Sorry 'bout that. Two Buck Chuck! Ha. I forgot about that. I can't believe there are still bottles out there. Must have been a pretty big batch!
