  1. How did he die? I did not know he was unwell.
  2. ok... Well, whatever. Make that Walt's choice of harpist as well then.
  3. Alice Coltrane's harp adds a nice touch to anything she played on. Too bad John checked out so soon. I've imagined a band including both Walt Dickerson and Alice Coltrane (mostly on harp) with Walt's choice of bassist(s) and drummer(s). I wonder if anyone else would be interested! I'm still hoping Walt starts playing out again. This collaboration with Alice is definitely a pipe dream!
  4. Start circulating live recordings. That is what I would suggest. Post your stuff on oink or dime. Tour Tour Tour. Let people record, etc. I really don't know how a band becomes "qualified".
  5. I was actually thinking the same thing about Oysterhead. I wonder what they'll be doing. Hopefully all Primus songs. That could be good. I haven't seen Widespread Panic in years. Well before Houser died. Still, one of my favorite rock albums. In my opinion, they didn't get better than this.
  6. Has Oysterhead been working on new material? By the way, I am not implying that the jam scene is over. Superfly has many spin-offs from the Bonnaroo festival. I'd still love to see Organissimo on the list.
  7. Wow. Great thread! Lots to check out. I've always imagined harp and vibraphone making a nice jazz recording. I'll have to find that Lytle recording!
  8. Give that kid a pair of sticks!
  9. Give that kid a pair of sticks!
  10. If you do a search, there was a good deal of discussion on Albert Stinson inside a thread on OBLIQUE.
  11. Just glance at the list for this summer. Is enough enough? Can we lay the jam band era to rest? Looking at the previously jam-centric festival Bonnaroo playlist, it looks to me like the end is near. Since the fall of Phish, it seems that the jam band audience has actually ventured out from under the shadow of the great flying hotdog. In turn, concert promoters are following suit. The "kids" may actually be interested in music after all. Now, in tradition of keeping the hipster pissing contest alive, I am sure we will hear from those that were buying Sun City Girls 7" since they were ten years old, or hanging out with Sunburned Hand since the late eighties, that this lineup has seen its day, or never actually made any worthwhile music in the first place, that the lineup still includes the barnacles of the jam band scene. The truth is, the vast majority of this summer's Bonnaroo ticket holders have been introduced to a much wider variety of music than I would have previously expected to see at a festival like this, and this seems to be an ongoing and postive trend for musicians and fans thereof the world over. I probably won't be making it this year, or any year for that matter since I scratched standing in the middle of a field in Tennessee in the sweltering heat off of my list of things to do in the summertime a few years ago. I am encouraged, though, that the promoters have really expanded their horizons. Hell, for all I know, they may just be meeting demand, that the scene does change, that I've been out of touch with all of this for long enough that I don't know what the "kids" like anymore after all. When did Devandra "break out"? Bonnaroo 2006
  12. Talk about it.
  13. I was sort of afraid of legal issues. Ghost, is this cool?
  14. I've really enjoyed listening to On The Beach since it was re-issued. One of the Neil Young albums that I had somehow never listened to until recently. Everything everyone has said already, for sure. He's for real.
  15. Yeah, you think?
  16. I cannot get it to load. My connection keeps timing out.
  17. Thanks for the news! I have to admit, when I saw that this thread had been revived, I was REALLY hoping that Walt Dickerson had been booked to perform again. Would you mind copy/pasting the interview here. I don't think Dmitry even has a copy anymore. For whatever reason, I can't get the page to load. Thanks again!
  18. I have SEMI-FORMAL. The fact that they included the voice mail from Drew Gress is hilarious. I haven't heard I, CLAUDIA. I can't imagine this band selling enough to be in the top 15 jazz records... I like it, sometimes a lot, but I can't imagine that many people would! As the NY Times stated recently: "...if the music were a little bit dumber, it would resemble the music of the rock band Tortoise. No disrespect to Tortoise." Not sure I understand that frame of reference. Tortoise is the last thing that would have come to my mind. The music is complex, not even deceptively so. I'll listen again tomorrow. Thanks for bringing this up.
  19. Would you consider adding Formanek to that list? It seems he is pretty much capable of anything he is feeling, and I've heard quite a spectrum of emotion from his bass. He doesn't get much mention around here. Is he not cool I wonder?
  20. Thanks for posting this. I didn't realize he was working on a book.
  21. I think the only Nathan Davis I have here is with Dolphy. One disc is called Naima, the other Last Recordings. I've always enjoyed his soloing on these two.
  22. Yeah, I was expecting some hardcore story similar to the Dimebag Darryl deal.
  23. I'm not doubting speakeasy. Glad to see they have a network. I was in a Tier 2 market and never came across anyone who was using their service, other than the speedtest they offer. That certainly doesn't mean anything. DSL is a distance-sensitive technology. The further you are from the co-lo, the less bandwidth you will be capable of receiving. Rostasi-you have good speeds at a good price. I wouldn't change anything. What have you heard about Verizon backing off of the build-out? Just curious. I moved and decided against working for Time Warner's business division.
  24. I have sold for both CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier, which I would assume Speakeasy is unless they have deeep pockets and somehow built out their own infrastructure, though it could be metropolitan only) and a facilities-based provider (Cox Business Services). If you can download another file at 7M, aside from the one on the speed test, I'd love to know about it. I've never done it. Then again, I don't really know of many sources that are allowing 7M of upload to any number of users, let alone a single user. The upload speeds have increased in the past year, but 384K is really going to be the best you are going to see. YMMV, as always with this stuff. We are sipping on Miller High Life here if you know what I mean. Data transmission over fiberoptic cable is an entirely different story. This is the direction that Verizon is moving in. Fiber to the premise. Pretty amazing $$$ they are laying down in order to deliver "content" to the household. re: speakeasy. I don't know anything about them. Chances are Speakeasy is reselling Verizon's signal, or whichever LEC (Local Exchange Carrier - Verizon, Bell South, SBC, etc) is in your area. There really isn't much they can do to improve the facilities. The FCC allows them to buy "at bulk" and sell at a discount. They aren't required to lay out any dough for a network. They co-locate at the LEC switch, work side by side with the LEC guys, etc. blah blah blah telecom Just like telephone numbers, there are only so many IP addresses to go around. Certain providers "own" certain ranges of IP addresses. One thing that I've noticed that triggers a change is power surge. It doesn't have to be a power outage... this will bump you as well though. I use DHCP settings and haven't really had any issues. I've had to contact the cable company here (TW) twice to reset my IP. Usually a power cycle will do. First thing everytime... unplug the modem and the router. Stretch, try to sightread a new tune, sit back down, plug it all in and the lights are blinking again. Is curling on?
