I'm also glad to see them back off the Cora trade. I like AC a lot -- does the little things. On paper, it's got a lot of upside for Boston, but paper be damned -- I keep Cora. Now... can we pry Atlanta's cold, dead hands off of Gonzalez to help our pen?

Nice to have a witness. Saw him at the 1369 when I was about 13-14 with my Dad. He went in in front of me and they almost didn't let me in. Rhythm section didn't bring much that night, but then, Griff rarely needed help.

JG at Regattabar: "That was called JAMF's Blues, JAMF's Blues... you know what a JAMF is? It's a Jive-Ass Motherfucker... look like we got some in the house tonight." For that alone, a special spot in my heart.

Brett was interviewed around that time, and somebody on the bench has asked him, "What are you gonna do if they call you out?" His response was, "I'm going to gonna go out and kick their ass!" The only thing that suggests staged was that he didn't actually punch out somebody, which I see as a positive -- other than that, I agree with Dan's response. Also, regarding the role of the evil empire and Billy the good Yankee, did anybody happen to catch Gammons' (whom I don't care for, btw) comments on the ESPN broadcast about the PTI (pine tar incident)? He called around and got... damnit, I don't have the name right now, hated cheapskate owner... argh... this is going to make me nuts... anyway, just to find how what the point of the rule had been in the first place. The guy had been on the rules committee that created that rule and stated that it was created because players were using too much pine tar and teams didn't want to incur that expense. That sort of speaks to Brett's comment at the time about being a lifetime .320 hitter (seems high, but that's the number he used) and not needing the 'help' of extra pine tar. Billy was a great strategist (I believe it was the same year that he told Willie Randolph, with a 3-2 count, to dive out of the way as though the ball were at his head, no matter where it was. He did, on a pitch down Broadway, and drew the walk. I'll bet Billy manages a great team in hell.

Just floating it out there that I have an open team in my fantasy baseball league. The team is in last place, but only because the owner went AWOL, not due to a lack of talent. Since I (commish) took over the team, they're 5-4, but have several injured players. their season record is 12-19, in a 45 game season. The wild-card leader for the division is currently 15-16, so there is plenty of time. This team also has several top players (Pujols, Hanley Ramirez, Kazmir, Vernon Wells, AJ Burnett, JJ Putz, Billy Wagner, K-Rod). Line ups are set twice each week (Monday and Friday) and there is no fee. Scoring is H2H/Rotisserie, meaning that points are not cumulative, but determine the results of each period's matchup. If interested, please drop me a line.

Maybe find a good library in a bad neighborhood. Perhaps a not-for-profit specializing in bringing the arts to the community. Either option allows you a tax write-off. It's tricky, but it seems to me that you should have options for a good home. If not, consider founding such an organization! If you don't need money, it would be very beneficial to a financially strapped organization if you could donate this material. That said, I would have something in writing that says they'll use the material for educational purposes -- don't want them turning around and doing the eBay thing.

Good, trade us Salty -- we *need* a catcher... oh captain, my captain is *done* (don't be fooled by that shot last night). Dan, now that's Lowrie's had a few games, are you still thinking he's an adequate solution? I've been busier than a hooker at a firemen's convention and haven't caught any games since the break (lame, I know).

Too many times... fortunately, none in recent history. Hang in there.

Interesting to read the thoughts on the Sox/Yankees on national TV. As a rule, I prefer out-of-market games on national broadcasts (and motherfuck Fox for their stupid regional schedule), but I was just commenting to my wife how sick I was getting of Chicago getting the national telecasts. A few weeks back, they had Cubs/Chisox for Saturday AND Sunday. I'm so bloody sick of Ozzie F. Guillen that I don't care to ever see him gaze at the dugout cam again... and as for Lou Piniella, he's owed one blinded-by-the-sun baseballs in the face by my count. 30 years... not too long to hold a grudge.

Eddie Jefferson Bitches Brew from THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER. Billy Mitchell - reeds; Joe Newman - trumpet; Mickey Tucker - rhodes; Sam Jones - bass; Eddie Gladden - drums; Eddie J - vocals Odd, but surprisingly hip.

He's also on Special People (same quartet), and shines on that as well. I don't know if him on anything else off the top of my head, and neither does allmusic.com This just in, he also shows up on AC's THE NAVIGATOR. You might drop by Andrew Cyrille's page and drop him a line for more information.

It just seems sad to me to watch great players get tepid cheers. Phil Neikro even pitched for the Yankees, and won game 300 with them...and barely got applause. That's because true baseball fans, in all cities, are a dying breed. Even NYC has its pink hat brigade.

Joe Torre and Jack McKeon were interviewed together prior to the All-Star game the year after they met up in the WS. Joe: "Well, we're gonna try to win and hopefully wrap up home-field advantage for the World Series." Jack: "Yeah, how'd that work out for ya?"

Quote of the night: [off camera to Morneau]: "How you feelin'?" [Morneau] "I'm tired. How the hell'd he hit 28?" What a friggin' spectacle!!!!!!

I've only played it once, and I love both guys. That said, there is better material from both. However, I think this is an excellent, very listenable set. If you're looking for a classic, this isn't it. But, as someone once said to me, "I'd listen to Mal set his drink on the piano." Waldron is not on fire, as he he gets on some of the live sets with Rouse and CROWD SCENE with Ricky Ford, but he's musical, tuned in, and professional -- listenable. Murray is Murray, and while that rubs some folks, he's one of the few guys I've seen and consistently been impressed by. If you like Murray and you like Waldron, this is a safe purchase (especially at the eMusic price). If you're questionable towards either, move on.

latest review of Jews In Hell
tkeith replied to AllenLowe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Allen, congrats. Is that the latest issue? Equal Time got in a couple of times (CD-Ring). Your plight has given me a great idea for a show theme (which will feature JiH prominently): MAINE'S UNSUNG Probably get me pulled from the airwaves, but what the hell -- needs to happen. -
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I gave up after 8 and went to bed! I just busted open a bottle of Champagne on the front lawn to celebrate (literally!). NO MORE JULIO FUCKING LUGO!!!!!!!!!

You're probably right, but I can't help but imagine Josh Hamilton in right field! :excited: :excited: Or just an every-day right fielder with a dependable bat. ... Actually, maybe what they really need is a new hitting coach. I don't know much about Henderson, but hitting is certainly the weak link so far. With their aggressiveness once they reach base, if this team could manufacture more runs with some situational hitting, stop hitting into double plays, etc., they'd be even more fun to watch. Right now, just getting somebody on base is an achievement. I can think of a left-handed hitting on-base machine who is available... if you really want to go there.

LOVE IT!!!! One of the many travesties of human life is that this guy never got any press.

And how does that make you feel?
