  2. No, but I once ordered a copy of "The Best of Dobie Gray" for my mum and sent it to the wrong address.
  3. Testifying from the album of the same name, by the Larry Young trio. Amen

  9. First of all, thanks Steven. I really enjoyed this disc! I don't have too many guesses but here goes: 1 - The alto sounds a bit like Dolphy to me. Not being a big fan of Dolphy (I listen when I have to, so don't have much), I wouldn't be too confident though. 2 -Absolutely no idea. Quite nice though. 3 - "Pannonica" - the trumpet put me in mind of Art Farmer 4 - Again, no idea. Too free for me, didn't like it. 5 - I'm a bit cloth-eared when it comes to flute players - all the flute in my collection seems to be played by sax players doubling up. Having said that, I REALLY liked this, and am keen to hear more. 6 - I thought this sounded like Stan Getz. 7 - Stephane Grappelli? 8 - The first soloist reminded me of Hank Mobley. Did he do any of those two tenors dates? No idea about the second tenor. 9 - This is a bit of a guess, but it sounds a bit like Jean Luc Ponty. Thought because of the electrification and the French connection. I've never heard Ponty play jazz, only Zappa, so like I say, a guess. 10 - Is the trumpet Kenny Dorham? Tenor player sounds familiar - I feel I should recognise him, given his distinctive tone. 11 - No idea 12 - I recognised this from the first note - Pepper Adams! I love this record - "Encounter!", with Zoot Sims and Tommy Flanagan. 13 - Haven't listened to many organ players, so couldn't say. 14 - "All The Things You Are" - I confess I saw MG's post on this one and the rubato opening had me expecting Hampton Hawes. I was expecting the rhythm section to kick in swinging at any time, but it never happened. Don't think it is Hamp myself, no idea who though.

  13. That's the type of vibe I'm hoping for, thanks! It's becoming ridiculously difficult to track this type of music down..anything a little off-center. Hard to believe 10 years ago BN released the complete Gil Melle; if i'd only known then what i know now.... I bought "Patterns" years ago, and it sat virtually unlistened until last year. When I rediscovered it, I bought the OJC "Primitive Modern/Quadrama" (think it's a very similar line-up of musicians but don't quote me as the CD itself is in the attic). I didn't like that one as much as "Patterns", but, inspired by this thread, I'll try again.
  14. It's my favourite Gil Melle album, for what it's worth. Nice tunes, swings, has that "Jimmy Giuffre 3" vibe.

  16. I like the Chet Baker version, from "Let's Get Lost"
  17. Randy Newman Alfred E Neumann (spelling?) Neumann from Seinfeld (again, spelling?)

  19. I heard that joke on a Bill Hicks show - "Smoking causes low birth weight - fuck it! Found my brand!"
  20. By "too flat" do you mean "too dull, or boring", or are you talking about problems of pitch? If the latter, I have no complaint about Jackie, but always find Gigi Gryce too sharp. Any views on this? I mean flat, as far as pitch is concerned. And I don't like his tone that much. I listened to the CD this afternoon, and I can hear that he plays very well, and I appreciate it, but I just don't like his sound. I hear that Gigi Gryce is sharp, sometimes, but since I like his tone and phrasing, I don't mind. It's a personal thing: You like a player's sound and conception, or you don't. As Ornette famously said, "You can play flat in tune and you can play sharp in tune." IMO Jackie usually plays flat in tune, especially on Blue Note; in his Prestige days a bit less so (i.e. less in tune and more just flat), though his sound still moves me. Some time ago, I expressed my unease about pitch/intonation in the late recordings of Serge Chaloff, but found no one who was prepared to say about him the sort of things which are being said in this thread about Jackie McLean and Gigi Gryce. Any views on Serge in this context? Bill - I only have "Blue Serge", so I couldn't compare with any of his other recordings. But, talking of "sharp" alto players, how do you like Charles McPherson?
  21. I like the Penguin Guide's description - "menthol sharp". I think it fits - his tone blows away the cobwebs, unblocks the ears as it were.

I too love Gryce's tone and phrasing. If you haven't heard Rat Race Blues I'd recommend it, my favourite Gryce album.

  24. Giant Steps, a recent purchase.
