  2. Most of the reference books give his dob as May 17, 1932, but I've heard from more than one source that the real year is 1931, and that for some reason he had shaved a year off long ago.

  5. Neither would I. I simply thought that Genell knew something I didn't, as a simple check with the AMG itself reveals that 'Waltz' was recorded several years before the Clark tune. Right... although generally I wouldn't use AMG as a way of trying to date anything. I wouldn't either, but Evans' own first recording of the tune was in September, 1956. This is well documented, and is long before any of Clark's recordings.
  6. I've never heard this either, but I guess it explains the 1946 year of birth that most jazz references give for Rene. Jackie would have been 14 or 15 (depending in which year of birth you believe for Jackie) when Rene was born. Not impossible, but unlikely.

  10. Pity the band never came to the States - I only got to enjoy them on record. I like the early stuff a lot, especially "Now Hear Our Meanin'" (Columbia) and "The Golden Eight" (Blue Note). Another really adventurous record they made was "Change of Scene" with Stan Getz. Took me years to track this one down!

  12. RIP, Jackie. I feel like I've lost an old friend. Actually, I have. Jackie was one the most individual voices in music, always instantly recognizeable. His tone is swirling around in my head as I type these words. What a drag. He gave us dozens or really classic recordings. My favorites include: A Long Drink of the Blues Bluesnik A Fickle Sonance Destination Out One Step Beyond Action (I'll stop here, 'cause I could easily add six more.) Farewell, old buddy.

  14. AMG gives Mickey Baker as the guitarist on this set. Not that they are more trustworthy than you, but is your source the actual liners or something else? Are we sure this is Kenny Burrel? This set contains music recorded at several sessions. On six tracks recorded 1/24/57, Burrell is the guitarist.

  18. I haven't heard all of them. Frankly, I thought the Freddy King was nothing special, the Gatemouth was good but not essential. The BB was very good, but then again, how can you go wrong with BB live? And, as you noticed, the sound is adequate at best.

  20. Yes, Dan, it was I who annotated several volumes in the series - the BB King, Freddie King, and Gatemouth Brown. I was hired by the man who supplied the tapes to Charly, which were cassettes with absolutely no information. Whatever information I provided was what I was able to dig up on my own. I believe that these were originally radio broadcasts, taken off the air by a fan, and almost certainly not authorized by the artists.
