  1. Yes, I like the Pablo small group stuff a lot especially the "Basie Jam" series. Norman Granz certainly had a way of putting the right musicians together for maximum blowing potential. Also like the albums with Joe Turner, Zoot Sims, et al. Most of the big band sides on Pablo are a little mechanical for my tastes.
  2. It is from "The Rill Thing", which is pretty strong throughout. As I said, the next two albums were dogs.
  3. Chill Wills Bob Wills Hugh Hefner
  4. I have the Art Tatum - no extra material, no significant sound improvement.
  5. Willie the Pimp Willie the Shake Shakey Horton
  6. I bought "The Rill Thing" when it came out and liked it a lot. The subsequent albums were disappointing. Of course I've never heard the unreleased album, but I really don't think this set is a must have.
  7. Studebaker John Kaiser Bill Lewis Nash
  8. (you dog) Hans Brinker David Brinkley Chet Huntley
  9. I tried responding with a "f#$% you" and a "kiss my ass" only to be be informed that I had entered an invalid password! Best to forward these things to the spoof departments at Ebay & Paypal.
  10. Mike Love Brian Wilson Al Jardine
  11. Monica Lewinsky (did she?) Monica Vitti Veni Vidi Vici
  12. Moe Howard Larry Fine Dianne Feinstein
  13. Jacques Cousteau Jacques Chirac Jacqui McShee
  14. The Charly LP contains the same eight tracks that are on the Red Bird compilation. Apparently that's all there is. It also contains ten tracks recorded for Imperial, six of them originally unreleased.
  15. We are two towns away from Revere. It doesn't look like we got that much to me. My guess would be closer to 6 or 8 inches. Of course, I haven't set foot out of the house yet.
  16. Paul Winchell Jerry Mahoney Knucklehead Smiff
  17. Thanks for the answers, Stefan. I was so sure I had #3, and I'm surprised about #7, a musician I usually like. That's what so great about these BFT's. We get a chance to reevaluate musicians we take for granted, and to have our eyes (ears) opened about musicians we may have ignored or taken lightly in the past.
  18. It's not stereo. If the individual disc is mono, that would be an improvement over the box, which is rechanneled stereo, perpetrated by Pablo in the 1970's, and carried over by Fantasy when they issued the CD version.
  19. I agree completely. It's the Ray Charles-esque testifying vocals and the funky New Orleans feel that makes him so special! And he can play some git-tar too.
  20. Blind Lemon Pledge Blind Melon Chitlin Melanie
  21. There's plenty of live Tatum out there. I highly recommend "God Is In the House" originally on Muse, currently on High Note.
  22. Mary Kay Place Loretta Haggers "Baby Boy" Charlie
  23. Thanks for the link. I saw Alvin Robinson with Dr John back in the 1970's, and have managed to gather many of the singles he put out on various labels over the years. One of the best unknown New Orleans guys! Charly released a nice LP of his Tiger/Red Bird/Blue Cat stuff back in the 1980's - "Shine On" (Charly 1181). Don't know if it ever made it to CD.
  24. Weather people are saying 6-12 inches of the white stuff starting about midnight. Fortunately I don't have to leave the house tomorrow!
  25. The show started at 8; the Sly tribute began just before 10; Sly appeared just after 10, so about 2 hours.
