  2. The problem with Fess (and I love him dearly) is that he tended to repeat tunes a lot, sometimes retitling them or altering them slightly. As brilliant as he was, his repertoire is not all that varied. A box set might be a little redundant for many people. That said, I've picked up everything I've ever been able to find!
  3. I park my car in my driveway next to the house. Several years ago I was awakened in the middle of the night by the police who had received a call from my neighbor that someone had smashed the window and broken into my car. The cops caught the prick in the act and had him in handcuffs. Unfortunately they wouldn't let me at him. Needless to say, I was very grateful to my neighbor, and fortunately I lost nothing - had to get the window replaced but insurance covered it.

    Bernard Purdie

Purdie has been claiming this for years, but never names the tracks, perhaps he can't. A few years ago, somebody in Goldmine magazine suggested that there may be some truth to Purdie's claims. The Hamburg-era tracks by Tony Sheridan with Beatles backing were issued on Atco as by "The Beatles", and the drumming reportedly is more pronounced on the Atco release than on other releases of these tracks. Of course, the original drummer on the Sheridan sides was Pete Best, anyway, not Ringo. Personally, I think Purdie's insistence on this matter may have tainted his reputation with some people, but there's no denying that he's one of the greatest.

  17. The Art Farmer "The Time and the Place" is a fine record, but unfortunately, it's not really live. The band did record at the Museum of Modern Art, but the sound was not up to snuff, so they went back into the studio and cut the album, then fake applause was added. Amazingly, the unissued material that turned up on the 2-fer reissue also has the fake applause. Mosaic makes no mention of this, so evidently the myth will be perpetuated. I wonder if undoctored tapes actually still exist? The Slide Hampton "Drum Suite" is another rare item that's nice to see available again.

  19. There's more than one way to look at this, Jim. The transaction isn't complete until both parties are happy. When the buyer pays in a timely manner, the seller is happy, but this is only the first half of the transaction. When the buyer receives the merchandise and is satisfied, then he is happy, and the transaction is complete. When the buyer gives his feedback, then the seller knows that a successful transaction has been completed. It has been my experience that only about 60% of buyers leave feedback, anyway. As a seller who used to leave feedback as soon as I received payment, I found on more than one occasion that certain people turned out to be ballbusters, after I had already left them positive feedback. I'm not talking about legitimate claims like disagreements over condition grading. I usually offer a refund if the item is not in the condition I claimed it was in. I'm talking about people who were completely unreasonable. As a seller, I've never left negative feedback. If somebody stiffs me, I report them to Ebay. If somebody busts my balls, I block them from bidding with me in the future. In regards to shipping delays, I've had customers give me grief over late deliveries that were not my fault. When you receive the item, check the shipping date. If it was shipped on the date that the seller claims to have shipped it, blame the post office.

  25. That was my point. Great musicians don't necessarily blend together very well. In the 1930's & 40's, Metronome magazine held similar polls, and would assemble recording sessions featuring as many of the winners as they could assemble. These all star sessions resulted in some pretty good music. By the mid 60's, the public's taste in music, and perhaps the music itself, had diversified so much that putting together an aggregation such as this would indeed be a nightmare. The sax section is a pefect example - five great musicians, but could they really play as a section?
