The Art Farmer "The Time and the Place" is a fine record, but unfortunately, it's not really live. The band did record at the Museum of Modern Art, but the sound was not up to snuff, so they went back into the studio and cut the album, then fake applause was added. Amazingly, the unissued material that turned up on the 2-fer reissue also has the fake applause. Mosaic makes no mention of this, so evidently the myth will be perpetuated. I wonder if undoctored tapes actually still exist? The Slide Hampton "Drum Suite" is another rare item that's nice to see available again.

There's more than one way to look at this, Jim. The transaction isn't complete until both parties are happy. When the buyer pays in a timely manner, the seller is happy, but this is only the first half of the transaction. When the buyer receives the merchandise and is satisfied, then he is happy, and the transaction is complete. When the buyer gives his feedback, then the seller knows that a successful transaction has been completed. It has been my experience that only about 60% of buyers leave feedback, anyway. As a seller who used to leave feedback as soon as I received payment, I found on more than one occasion that certain people turned out to be ballbusters, after I had already left them positive feedback. I'm not talking about legitimate claims like disagreements over condition grading. I usually offer a refund if the item is not in the condition I claimed it was in. I'm talking about people who were completely unreasonable. As a seller, I've never left negative feedback. If somebody stiffs me, I report them to Ebay. If somebody busts my balls, I block them from bidding with me in the future. In regards to shipping delays, I've had customers give me grief over late deliveries that were not my fault. When you receive the item, check the shipping date. If it was shipped on the date that the seller claims to have shipped it, blame the post office.

That was my point. Great musicians don't necessarily blend together very well. In the 1930's & 40's, Metronome magazine held similar polls, and would assemble recording sessions featuring as many of the winners as they could assemble. These all star sessions resulted in some pretty good music. By the mid 60's, the public's taste in music, and perhaps the music itself, had diversified so much that putting together an aggregation such as this would indeed be a nightmare. The sax section is a pefect example - five great musicians, but could they really play as a section?

If you are referring to the quartet sides recorded August 13/15, 1962, I only know of one - "Hawkins! Alive! At the Village Gate" (Verve 8509). All the Things You Are Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho Mack the Knife It's the Talk of the Town The CD reissue contains two more tracks: Bean and the Boys If I Had You "Hawkins! Eldridge! Hodges! Alive at the Village Gate" (Verve 8504) was recorded August 15, 1962: Satin Doll Perdido The Rabbit In Jazz The CD reissue contains four more tracks, Hawk & rhythm section only: Mack the Knife It's the Talk of the Town Bean and the Boys Caravan (these are different performances than the ones issued on the previous album)

"Alive" was recorded the same week as the one with Hodges & Eldridge. It is one of my favorite Hawkins records, and was one of the first CD's I bought (to get the bonus tracks). There is a version of "Joshua Fit the Batlle of Jericho" that demonstrates just how timeless Hawk was. Unfortunately, I think it is now out of print. All of the Prestige albums are good. The weakest is probably "No Strings" on which they do the music from a Broadway show. The tunes, for the most part, are forgettable, although Hawk & company play well as always. I don't think "Good Old Broadway" and "Make Someone Happy" have been mentioned yet, and I seem to recall that they are available on a 2-on-1 CD. For those who like "At Ease" and "Hawk Relaxes", these are every bit as good.

When the poll began in the late 50's it was primarily a jazz poll. By the late 60's, people like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and others were regularly among the winners, which just pointed up how silly the poll had become. I recall one year that Peter, Paul & Mary were the top vocal group. Can't say that I remember for certain that Streisand ever won, but I was just making a humorous point anyway.

Obviously he's pissed that you "won" (got your money back). Most honorable sellers would have just moved on.

As an Ebay seller myself, I feel I must defend the majority of us who are honest and who respect the buyer. This asshole Cruisetunes has 11 negatives - I'm surprised that Ebay allows him to continue doing business, but I guess it's all about the volume of business he's done. I've only received one negative in the years I've been doing business, and it was from a jerk who didn't even give me the opportunity to make things right. I've never had to appeal a negative feedback, but a high volume seller I know told me that he did petition an unfair feedback to Ebay and they did rescind it, even though it took a few months. Maybe they've changed their policy, I don't know. Others have told me that Ebay usually sides with the seller in a dispute - which certainly sucks for the buyer who's been cheated. Maybe it's not worth the trouble, Kevin, but this asshole has accused you of theft, and perhaps you should file a complaint with the police if that's your only option.
