(New) Album of the Year: Michael Formanek on ECM
David Ayers replied to MomsMobley's topic in New Releases
Put it this way, on a blind test you'd identify the label *long* before you got the musicians. -
(New) Album of the Year: Michael Formanek on ECM
David Ayers replied to MomsMobley's topic in New Releases
Well, I've listened this through, and am keen to give it more time. It's a good one and well worth investigating. Some great passages especially in the long 'Tonal Suite'. A bit - just a little bit - of ECM-itude to get past, as in the keening opener which could as easily be Garbarek, but we'll cope. -
How do I keep my posts from being combined?
David Ayers replied to Big Al's topic in Forums Discussion
Eventually ALL of your posts - and everything else you ever said or thought or will or might say or think, or even might have said, or would have said - will be combined into one giant blob. -
When Blue Notes were first translated to CD extra tracks were added whenever possible. ECM went the opposite way and added nothing. Who was right? Answer, O History!

Listening to it now. Bit ECM-y? -
If proven the cup should be withdrawn and given to Hungary. In fact all sports results should be suspended until infallible detection technology is developed, along with the time-travel technology needed to return to the past and do proper testing. Of course those results will only apply in a parallel reality... and since ours is by definition the reality in which time-travel will never be developed (little logical conundrum there for you) we will never know anything about it. So all results must now be reinstated! Sorry Hungary - you still lost!

Bertrand - thanks for all that detail! It will also be interesting to find out how they have sourced it. Same for the other first CD issues here, in fact. It may be they have a second generation tape. This TOCJ list has more collector appeal than usual.

Yeah I wondered if those Bud Shank had been on CD before. The LP of Michelle did quite well in its day and is easy to score but the CD might be an option. I regret I once passed on a mint-ish copy of Oliver Nelson's Michelle (on Impulse) which is not all Beatles, and I'd quite like a CD of that too - it was issued in Japan, but came and went. LPs of this sort of 'lounge music' are quite findable (or were, when any stores actually stocked LPs) but one's I've had have been quite crackly since they evidently got overplayed on furniture-type hi-fi by people who evidently enjoyed them and played them over and over!

I should say that the cover is posted by da bastids and is obviously an LP, so they are guessing the CD cover will be the same. Any thoughts on the other upcoming TOCJ at the link to hmv.co.uk I provided?

Ken McIntyre's UA titles were reissued by BN years ago along with lots of extra tracks. Am I right in thinking that this upcoming reissue is the first time on CD for a separate issue of this title presumably with original artwork? Rogert Kellaway's Stride! is there too, and there may be other novelties in the upcoming TOCJ listed at hmv.co.jp- I couldn't be sure. There's a few things there I have no idea what they are. The price is right, too. Already listed by da bastids.

Ahmad Jamal, Vindicated
David Ayers replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Hm. I think Jarrett's version of Poinciana is rather good. In fact I see it is on youtube (no video): So how would people who love Jamal's trios compare them to others which haven't yet been dissed, such as Bill Evans'? -

Would you like any more ham in that ham sandwich? I can enjoy Jamal the same way I can enjoy some Gene Harris. I suppose the difference is that Harris is (often) straightforward cheese and aimed at a, shall we say, less ept audience. Jamal is a better musican probably, but like Allen I feel quite resistant when large claims are made about his gentle noodling and dramatic pauses. That's entertainment, I suppose. Ham and cheese in the same sammich? Now you're talking. No-one heard Extensions then? -
Ah! Thanks for the tip. I have seen these around - I'm gonna buy some.

Have you heard that album Extensions from 1965? Sounds like he - uh, sorry Jim, *they*, the WHOLE trio - are auditioning for Bitches Brew. -
Agreed. It's a chance to pile through some stuff you might not otherwise get to. That said, the Quadromanias I've had were only half full on each disc, so were less bargainous than first appeared, given the low production values, invariably broken box etc. Still, they are as cheap as a magazine and you can always chuck them once you have skipped through them.
-
I didn't buy one! There is no name on the notes, and most of the notes are just a word-for-word quotation of the original notes. The company name appears (Jazz Wax Records), there is no address or even country of origin. Reference to the original label is removed. The sticker about DMM contains some hocus pocus and an engineer's name. I found brief mention of these on the SH forum (I don't read that forum, I was googling, honest...) and someone said the sound was fine though guessed it was taken from a CD. I think these are designed to cash in on the market for genuine audiophile vinyl and depend on confusion marketing. I'm not sure why Ray's bought so many. They seem to have pushed put genuine product. They are cheaper than genuine audiophile, though they resemble them, and dearer than the OJC and Blue Note new vinyl you sometimes see knocking around.
-
Well these are definitely from the same organization that is doing the CD 'pirates'. The covers are the same as some of those fakes. They are listed here at amazon.co.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=jazz+wax+records&tag=googhydr-21&index=music&hvadid=3435113706&ref=pd_sl_7w5ffa0qlf_e#/ref=sr_pg_1?rh=n%3A229816%2Ck%3Ajazz+wax+records&keywords=jazz+wax+records&ie=UTF8&qid=1287311264 Check out the fake Way Out West cover: :puke:

So here I am at Rays, looking through all the new vinyl. I am checking a copy of The Cooker in the light of a discussion in another thread. I'm expecting it to be a facsimile, but the rear cover is modified, though it quotes the original notes, and there is an EXTRA TRACK on the LP which I find odd. So I check other classic LPs which are all in this format (modified rear cover, peculiar extra track) and are all on the Jazzwax label. So someone tell me this is not just Andorran vinyl of a weird variety. All are DMMs (!) and come in at £15 which is maybe $20 so not cheap either. Anyone know anything about these?

Interview with Klaus Heymann on future of music industry
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Classical Discussion
The weak link may be UK broadband speeds. Might get there around 2099.. Agreed. Seems a long way off. The roll-out of fibre-optic cable will be the key to that. It will take time... -
Interview with Klaus Heymann on future of music industry
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Classical Discussion
It's interesting, isn't it? As you say, he's very candid. 12-18 months before the industry really knows what form the streaming industry will take - that's not long to wait! I would be interested to know why it is thought that growth in downloads has fallen off. I wonder whether the market of mainly older jazz collectors for physical product is similar to that for classical - stable but in sloooow decline. I predict a sudden meltdown, myself, but Heymann thinks not. Though Heymann doesn't talk about it, I get the impression that some small classical and jazz labels are basically a labour of love and so fall outside even these categories - i.e. the owners sustain them out of enthusiasm. So there already hardly is a market for some material and it can't really decline. I can hardly wait for the new streaming world, especially the video aspect. Music really does cost far too much compared to TV. As I already get with (good but not perfect) Spotify, I want things on tap and cheap, so when they get all their ducks lined up on very high quality streaming, I will be very happy. -
