AotM - January 2008: Jimmy Heath THE QUOTA and TRIPLE THREAT
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
Yes, I accept the points you make about about Swamp Seed. It isn't quite the album that Really Big! is - or Triple Threat or Quota for that matter. But I personally prefer it to Thumper, which is much more of a blowing session. (I'm very much into arranged modern jazz.) Respectfully disagree with you guys about Swamp Seed; I think it is almost the equal of REALLY BIG! However, like BillF, I also really dig arranged jazz. -
As much as I love Mobley's playing and arranging on this album, I find it difficult to listen to all the way through simply because of the presence of James Spaulding. He overplays damn near every solo he has, screaming into the upper registers of his alto sax AND flute, so much so that I usually end up hitting the FF button through his solos.

When I went to Rapidshare, there were all these options of different softwares to choose from. Did I miss something?

Sweeeeeeet!

I think this is their way of clearing out the inventory without actually setting anything out on the clearance racks. This doesn't make sense to me, but then what does anymore?

AotM - January 2008: Jimmy Heath THE QUOTA and TRIPLE THREAT
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
Yes! I find a lot of similarities between Blue's mid-size (sextet & greater) sessions and Heath's albums. Both men's Riverside albums are extremely enjoyable! -
one should maybe add that it is somewhat doubtful whether that third box will ever appear... True. But we were saying that about the second box, so I remain hopeful.

OJCs, other Concords, some Verves $4.99 @ J&R
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous Music
If you do, it will certainly explain why so many titles are not in stock! -
That depends on which Trane CDs you have. I mean, the Prestige boxes released on Concord contain everything that was in the big Trane Prestige box released by Fantasy. That box contained everything Trane recorded for Prestige except the Miles Davis Quintet sides. The two Prestige boxes released by Concord--Fearless Leader (his leader sessions for Prestige) and Interplay (co-leader or feature sessions)--are all in the big Fantasy Prestige box; a third box, which will contain the remaining Prestige sessions not covered by the first two. When that box is released, the entire contents of the old Fantasy Prestige box will have been re-released and remastered. Hope that helps.

How the heck did I overlook this one? PM sent!!!!

Whoever got this is in for a treat if they haven't already heard this album, and if that person HAS heard this album, then the sound is gonna blow him/her away.

I've only ordered from them twice before, and I think the wait in both cases was somewhere around three weeks or so. Oh well, at least they don't charge you until the order ships. -
"Low fidelity!" I love it! Great spoof on the cover and the title!

Off campaigning for Huckabee. Hey, it's Chuck Norris: he can do a roundhouse kick from wherever he's standing and still hit his target from thousands of miles away!

All discs were mailed out today. I put Mr. Bassman's discs in the same envelope as mikeweil's. The link to the download will (hopefully) be up no later than Thursday night/Friday morning (depending on where you live). It's two CDs with no theme. If you find a theme or two, you get extra points. All I did was start grabbing CDs off the shelf and when it was all said and done, I had two CDs of songs I really enjoy and no desire to trim it down. If you remember my last BFT, you could easily call this collection "More of the Same, Only Much More of It." Nothing challenging, nothing too obscure; just two CDs chock fulla groovy tunes! In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if someone aces this thing! Hopefully, once the link to the download is up, more folks will join in!

Don't tell me you still HAVE that!!! It's not my fault, actually: rostasi dumped it on me a couple years ago, and really he gets the credit for the Bird stamp as well!

I second that! PM sent on a possible trade.

AotM - January 2008: Jimmy Heath THE QUOTA and TRIPLE THREAT

Totally agree! It probably also didn't help that they were both (along with all the other Heath titles) released as Ltd. Edition OJCs! Thanks for posting those! Totally agree with your comment above! AFAIC, these and most of Blue Mitchell's output define what I like to call the "Riverside sound:" nicely arranged small group sessions that sound a lot bigger (ie. more personnel) than they really are. -
Totally agree with the big fuckin' dog idea. Bummed that his happened to you again, and agree that this has to be someone who either knows you and/or knows your patterns. Scary to say the least.

yeah, but did he uplift the field of jazz journalism?

So I thought I'd start a thread. But I found I didn't need to! My take on Cannonball is different; I started buying his albums because I loved Nat's playing so much. "Work song" was one of the early Soul Jazz albums I bought, in 1961, really before I knew much about it, and therefore had quite an impact on the development of my ideas. A funny thing is, until the last few months, I never bothered with other Riverside albums by Nat. I've got tons of his stuff, but mostly later recordings. But I'm really enjoying Branching out Much brass In the bag Little big horn Others I've had for a while that are in regular circulation on my player are Sayin' Somethin'/Live at Memory Lane - Atlantic twofer on Collectables with Joe Henderson (from 1966/67) A little New York midtown music - Galaxy (OJC) (1978) Noble & Nat - King Snake (1990) (great joint effort with Noble "Thin Man" Watts) Talkin' about you - Landmark (1990) The old country - Enja (1990 again) Workin' - Timeless (live in Berlin 1992) A Night in Manhattan - Alfa Jazz (also 1992) Good company - Challenge (1994) Live at the Floating Jazz Festival - Chiaroscuro (1994) - Nat tells some great stories on this 2 CD set, as well as the music - like Cannon, he had the gift of the gab Mercy mercy mercy - Alfa Jazz (Evidence) (1995) As a sideman, Nat played on some great sessions. Some of my favourites that haven't been mentioned are King Curtis - The new scene of King Curtis - New Jazz (OJC) King Curtis - Soul meeting - Prestige (OJC) Gene Ammons - Goodbye - Prestige (OJC) Gene Ammons - And friends at Montreux - Prestige (OJC) Don wilkerson - The Texas twister - Riverside (OJC) James Clay - A double dose of soul - Riverside (OJC) Bennie Green & Gene Ammons - The swingin'est - VeeJay I am SO glad you didn't post this BEFORE the J&R OJC sale this past weekend! Couldn't agree more! Slightly off-topic, I've always felt Blue Mitchell's best dates as a leader came on Riverside.
