  1. A few comments! But, but, but..... not even on account of the drummer? Not at all! Hard to pick a favorite player on this track. My favorite's the drummer!
  2. My pleasure! For some reason, I've been digging disc two more than disc one lately, but maybe that's just the mood I've been in. I find disc two to be much more relaxing than disc one. Guess you could say that this is my own little Moon Beams and How My Heart Sings. My biggest concern in all of this is that nobody would find anything substantive, much less enjoyable. Happily, I see that, for the most part, I was wrong on both counts!
  3. PM sent! Well, stuff is "new and exciting" if its been ages since you've dug out your copy of the vinyl. At least I know now what will be next in the "transfer to CD" pile. FINALLY!!! I thought nobody would pick up on this! I'd love to take full credit for this one, but the reality is that Booby is my default guess for vibes. So ... Hey, gotta take credit when you get it! Woody Shaw is my go-to guy whenever I'm guessing a trumpeter, and there's been a couple times I've been right! It ain't much, but I'll take it!
  4. PM sent! You would be correct! Great (and appropriate) play on words there! You are. FINALLY!!! I thought nobody would pick up on this! And I can't wait for your comments! Great guesses all around!
  5. Man, I love it when folks dig a BFT! Yes, but this isn't from that session. Are you thinking of that Bethlehem reissue from some years back that was actually under Trane's name? Interesting how a lot of folks are thinking this is a big band! Yup. Correct on all three points! Griff fools nobody! You are very much right on track! Breakin' it up again!
  6. I would gripe about the return of the RVGs, since I went out and paid more for them at the brick-n-mortar; but since that recent BMG coupon code got me a ton of other discs for about $50, and the brick-n-mortars could always use the help, I'm cool with it.
  7. Duke Pearson, eh? I can't hear that one. But it certainly is Blue, and he is the leader here! Can't believe you don't dig the tenor! Ah well, like I said earlier..... I looked through ALL my Blue Mitchell CDs and didn't find this. I should have looked thrugh the fuckin' LPs - oh bleedin' God! MG
  8. Is that his first Muse date? I didn't know that! If so, you nailed it, description and everything! Oddly enough, I just received Montara from BMG this week. If it's anything like the Barron date, as you say, then I can't wait to dig into it! I have that side. It's called "Sunset to Dawn" and Warren Smith plays vibes. That's the LP, indeed!
  9. Well, given that the article itself is almost nine years old.....
  10. And for me, the drummer absolutely KILLS on this song! Ah well, 'twould be a boring world if we all agreed with each other! Duke Pearson, eh? I can't hear that one. But it certainly is Blue, and he is the leader here! Can't believe you don't dig the tenor! Ah well, like I said earlier..... Again, can't hear the Pearson connection, but then maybe it's because I readily identify this sound with the leader on this date. Perhaps you're thinking of the Cannonball version? Wrong on both accounts. However, any recs you can give me for Michael Howell would be cool. I've never heard of the guy. Yet another reason why I love BFTs! I take it you're a Duke Pearson fan? Nope, not Hubbard. I had trouble getting used to the way they slowed down as well, but it grows on you after a while. IMHO, anyway! Wanna bet? I'm glad you picked up on the piano player. I've always thought that was one of his greatest strengths: the ability to be chameleon-like in emulating the Count and the Duke. But then, that may be giving away the answer to another tune (oh, like I haven't already done that repeatedly around here)! Lotta people calling this "lounge music" or the like. Yeah, I s'pose so. In the context of the album from which it's lifted, it's actually quite a nice respite. I guess that's what happens when one isolates a track away from its kinfolk! Boy, are some of y'all gonna be surprised when you find out who's playing vibes! Speaking of that, I've always wondered why this song was faded out. Maybe the tape was running and the trio started futzing around on this tune; perhaps they stopped abruptly only to find out they had something halfway decent. I could speculate all day. Sure seems like the bass player is throwing a few people for a loop around here. Good! Great guesses, MG! Can't wait to see your comments to disc two!
  11. Yay! Someone else who enjoyed the BFT! Nope! Wrong on both accounts! Nope! Wrong on both accounts! This is what I love about BFTs: y'all make a call like this and I go back and listen to the tune and think, "Hey, I can hear it, too!" It's not the tune you mentioned, but I can certainly see where you're coming from on this! Again, another guess that made me listen to this tune with new ears. I've only ever listened to this for the arrangement; I've never really paid attention to the soloists because the color of the arrangement took away from the prominence of the soloist. Which is not a bad thing, mind you. So I listened to it again tonight and focused on the soloists; by themselves, eh, we could probably agree to disagree, but again I think the charts either mask any shortcomings or give the soloist more meat to chew on. Take yer pick. Wow! I'd like to hear your definition of "modern" sometime! I tell ya, when I put this thing together, I had no theme in mind. In listening to these tunes again, quite a few themes have developed, and if I remember them come answer time, I'll tell y'all about 'em! Breakin' it up again! I can't resist commenting on y'alls groovy guesses!
  12. Judging by your choice of Eddie Harris and Paul Desmond tracks you're o.k. with a smoother , more commercial sound , and so I think you'll really enjoy Montara . It has similarly 'slick' production values , but plenty of atmospheric , hypnotic , low-key grooves . Cool. Now I really can't wait to dig into it! True, it's not from his Christmas album. I guess you could call this one of his Peanuts records, but I don't know if this tune was ever used in one of the specials. Good call!
  13. On the one hand, it's nice that albums like "Blue Soul" and "Adderley in NY" are finally getting some kind of sonic upgrade. On the other hand...... what, isn't this the 2nd or 3rd sonic upgrade for the other three? I know for a fact that the Evans and the Bags/Wes discs have been released as K2's and Hybrid SACD's. But I guess it's like John L said, it's worth it to have OK's "insightful comments" about the sessions.
  14. Drat! I'll bet that first half of disc two triggered it all!
  15. He gets the award for Most Ironic Comment After The Incident.
  16. Is that his first Muse date? I didn't know that! If so, you nailed it, description and everything! Oddly enough, I just received Montara from BMG this week. If it's anything like the Barron date, as you say, then I can't wait to dig into it! Are you gonna comment on the rest of the tracks? I hope so!
  17. Why, yes it was recorded at RVG; I just checked this CD for that info for the very first time! Guess I don't know that VG sound as well as I thought I did. I fully agree with you about Earl Klugh making a record like this, as well as the way the beauty of this song grabs you right from the start. It had the same effect on me first time I heard it. The rest of this album is as much a treat as this track, but this one REALLY stands out! The irony here is that on your BFT #4, on the Horace Silver track, I correctly guessed Ron Carter as the bassist. Now it's come full circle: you correctly guessing Ron Carter as the bassist on my BFT! I don't know about you, but during the climax of the piece, Carter plays that little octave drop that is instantly recognizable as something he'd play. And no one else can play it like him, AFAIC! Yup, that's the one! Abso-freakin-lutely! The rest of this album is the same way. This album had all the potential to be something schmaltzy, and it's not like the leader's other A&M dates were all the substantial (pardon me for not liking anyone covering Simon & Garfunkel. Too much nothing there to be any of something). Something about this album sets it apart from the others, and just because I can't identify it or describe it doesn't mean it don't exist. Kinda like my argument for God. Arlington Public Library's having their spring sale in a couple months! Y'never know! I'm honored by the compliment!
  18. Nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this tune more than what's on the surface. I got this album (CD) as a birthday present some years back, and instantly fell in love with this song. IMO, there are few albums in any genre that start off as nice as this! Ever imagined what that opening scene might look like if someone had scored it with this? I have, many times! Me three!!! I fully agree that this ain't Chet at his strongest, but that frailty serves this song well, IMO. Isn't anyone gonna comment about the lovely piano playing, especially the solo? Drat! Not that I really thought I could fool you, but..... drat!!! Gotta split it up again, too many quote blocks, not enough posts!
  19. Nope! Nope, not a Vanguard date! Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for those. I'm going thru a pretty serious JH jones right now!
  20. Hell yeah! HELL FREAKIN' YEAH!!!!! I dig the way Roy comes shoutin' in for his brief chorus and Papa Jo doesn't just accentuate that entrance, he slaps the shit outta it!!! Anyone else diggin' the guitar player here? One moment soundin' like Freddie Green, then slipping into a Wes bag for hizzown solo? Too young to be that Auld. (couldn't resist) Are YOU in for a surprise! You got THAT right! Much as I love this album, it took a loooooooong time for the sound of the bass on this album to grow on me. NOW I understand! Y'know, I never really looked at it from that angle, but then after reading this and thinking about the various Evans songs I really enjoy (and there's a good many of them), I start to remember the use of those left-hand chords and realize I love his playing as much for his left hand as his right hand! I'm pretty sure Larry Kart couldn't've said it better! Thank YOU! Your commentary was extraordinary, as usual. Nice to know you nailed the Silver tune! I was kinda hoping you would!
  21. Nope, it's not a clarinet. In fact, it's the only appearance of a reed on this album, all the more shameful because as you can tell, there's no solo. Never understood why..... That's cool. I put this track on here just to gauge reactions; my first reaction when I heard this album was one of comfort, and it sounded like the musicians fed off that feeling of comfort. But given how many times I've seen this in the used bins, I guess I'm in the minority on this one. OH well..... Somebody say AMEN and HALLELUJAH!!!! Actually, I found this at an Arlington Public Library book sale, walked outta there with an armload of records for about six bucks! This was one of them (and another record from that sale makes an appearance on disc two). When I first saw it, I thought it was the record you sampled for YOUR BFT #4 waybackwhen! Obviously it wasn't, but oh whatta find it was! I totally agree with you that Mosaic needs to get on the ball with this project! You're freakin' welcome!!! Yup, that's the one! I'm only allowed so many quote blocks, so I gotta split this up. Oh well, more padding of the post count!
  22. I got mine on Saturday, which was two days after the deal was done! Yet another endorsement for the Aggie fan! :tup
  23. Agggghhhh - Of course it is ! And it was staring at me from the shelf ! I hate it when that happens!
  24. Well, you've always been a good improviser on the tenor sax, and your guesses follow suit! Yup! Right tenor, wrong album. 'taint Drakes on the trumpet, neither. Man, the way you were describing it, I thought you were about to hit the nail on the head! This whole album is "in another class altogether." Right about everything except the studio. Depends on who the boss is, probably! Especially when you find out who the arranger is and who the leader is. Correctamundo on Woods & Cleveland, not tellin' who the tenor is, but I've never seen him talked about. RIGHT on, brother! Testify!!! All right all 'round! This is the track I use whenever someone says that Miller couldn't swing. Bullshit he couldn't, despite the fact that 99 times out of 100 he chose not to. Actually, I thought your biggest objection would've been on the choice of drummer for this date. Like I said in my last BFT (400 years ago), this drummer is my favorite small-band drummer, and doesn't look I'm gonna change anyone's mind about that! Yup! All around yup! Yup all around a-GIN!!! May have to find that Dorham Showboat. What label? This post about made my day until I read your commentary on the rest of the disc! All of y'all are making good guesses, and I'm having a blast reading them!
  25. trying to find out i stumbled across this odd article (peculiarly self-centered but then it is 11 pages on KD) http://ecommons.txstate.edu/cgi/viewconten...mp;context=jtmh Dave Oliphant. Kenny Dorham & Leo Wright: Texas Bebop Messengers to the World, Journal of Texas Music History 2001 footnote 21: someone with a credit card should get the book for 55 cent: http://www.amazon.com/Born-Under-Sign-Jazz...1449&sr=8-1 (don't think all editions have the cd but this one apparently has) YES!!! I've been looking for the answer to this question for years! Pity this song never got the recognition it deserved. I wonder why he didn't record it for his own vocal album. Did KD compose other songs with lyrics?
