WTF? Give me a break, man. In case you hadn't noticed, this thread is just the opposite. All I did was react to a seemingly harsh generalization. In other words, your moods change... like ALL of us!

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I didn't really intend to knock it (haven't heard it in years, and don't pretend to "know" it), btw... just a bit put off by Ubu's way of putting things I guess (and the general Mogie bashing, which I couldn't resist reacting against). I suppose it's the difference between understanding a piece of music and enjoying it naturally... although I will admit that understanding can lead to better enjoyment. But in this case, probably not for me. But that's life, and of course I realize I'm the poorer (would never argue otherwise, and hopefully you'll never see me bashing CT or anyone else). Btw, Jim, your eloquence is real, and doesn't necessarily have anything to do with your knowledge of music or musical subjects. You gots a real good way with words. Period. Anybody who doesn't recognize that needs to sit down and study.

I guess I'm generally not much for music that's so difficult that you have to study and "read up" in order to have it work for you. As for your comments on Cornbread and Mogie's BN's... well, I actually feel a bit sorry for you. Maybe you need to study them harder and read up? Btw, let's hear you play "Ceora".

You don't mention what label actually released the Hendricks CD. Lonehill, right? For better or worse, shouldn't you mention that somewhere in your description? -

Very narrowly missed the cut for me, along with Minor Move... and Leapin' and Lopin'... and Horace Scope... and... RT, I think you're trying (way) too hard to find "truths" in all of this. Seriously.

Dude, they used up all their food there! They used up all their gas. THEY BURNED THEIR TIRES! He and his wife didn't eat, so the children would have food. She BREAST FEED the the 4 year old. He had to do what he did. Couldn't hope to be found in time. Um, I think Jim said he was foolish to go off the road, not that he shouldn't have ventured out. Oregon may not get the number of arctic blasts that Michigan gets, but... the west coast states are large, with a wide variety in elevations and climate types. Maybe your Mom spent all of her time in the lower elevations, but even then I'm sure she must have known that it snows in the mountains in Oregon. It's no fluke to get snow in the mountains at that elevation and at that latitude... it snows in the mountains here in the coastal ranges in California, though less frequently.

As I said before, I think some of the logic/assumptions here are the basis for some of the disagreements and confusion. Who ever said that all of Freddie Hubbard's BN's were exceptional? Who said that everything on BN is "automatically great"? Even if someone did, that counts as one opinion. If two people said it, that's two opinions... so what am I missing here? Maybe I'm just not exposing myself to the same sources of hyperbole as some of you. There are a lot of BN's that I don't own, and that's based on how I have reacted to the artists and styles on other recordings. I've never gone around telling people that everything on BN is essential or great, and I don't know anybody who has. I think we can agree and feel confident in saying that BN was a great label, but that doesn't mean we all think that all of it belongs on all of our shelves.

Well, I think the term "overrated" tends to imply that there's a body of people who are doing the "overrating", and the individual expressing the opinion is reacting against that. If each one of us wants to have our own definition (and yours doesn't work for me) of "overrated", then this discussion is even more pointless than I already thought it was. And don't worry, because I'm not even sure if I understand what I just said.
-
Oh, COME ON... NO SHIT?!?
-
There's an important distinction between "overrated" and "popular" (in the sense that a majority of people- members here, let's say) enjoy something. I haven't been able to get much out of Andrew Hill personally, but I'm not going to climb up on a box and suggest that he's "overrated". "Overrated" is always a tricky concept. We don't all agree upon even what is highly rated, or "classic". I guess I just don't much like this topic... but at least it's remained civil.
-
Well. that's what this is, the thread on overrated Blue Note albums. So I'll try to do a tally when the traffic stops. Hmm... I probably disagree with roughly half of the opinions that have been posted (and something tells me that this is probably true for many others). I guess I'm still not sure I see the point. Not only do I disagree with some of the sentiments, I find myself disagreeing with some of the logic/assumptions. For example, I never thought Dexter's "Gettin' Around" was hyped all that much- even by Dexter fanatics, yet somebody listed it as an overhyped "classic" (I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist). I don't have a strong opinion to offer on that album specifically, but I would say that it has tended to be lower on the totem pole in terms of people's ratings of Dexter's albums. Anyway, I've seen other examples like this here, so the whole topic seems kind of confused. Like I said before, it's all subjective, which is only natural. The moral, imo: Listen and decide for yourself, and encourage newbies to do the same.
