  2. Maybe he does need more time to think this through. He "can't regret it"... so, in the above comments, is he telling these millions of children that when they grow up, it's really okay to head butt if they are provoked seriously enough? He should regret it. He has a right to suggest that Materazzi also be punished, but he should regret the head butt. IMO.
  3. Is it just me, or is this like the oldest jazz bbs question known to mankind? No biggie, just curious...

  5. Well, he hasn't explained his position much beyond what we already knew through his agent the morning after the incident. And before that television worldwide had shows that obviously Materazzi had said something to upset him. The only new part now is that he apologises to Materazzi. As I understand it all, he was first very ashamed and denied to go out for the medal ceremony as he felt undeserving of a medal. Then I gather he went home and visited his mother in the hospital. Yesterday evening the statement came that he would talk on the telly today, so why do it earlier. He certainly is not proud of what he did and I can very well imagine he is not eager to talk about it. So he chose his own venue instead of a horde of screaming journalists. There really is not much to say to make up for what he did. I'm sure he wouldn't have felt eager, and there's still no way to make excuses for his action, I just think it would have been better to make a statement (or issue same via a representative or spokesperson) sooner, because the impression is given (to me, at least) that he is calculating and planning (perhaps even according to what Materazzi and media people have already stated) instead of speaking the simple truth as he sees it. Oh well, at least he's come forward now (Brad's post came after I made my "complaint", so that minimized it in a way).
  6. Obviously, this thread is (now) (in part) about Mike Ricci. It's also about the Funny Rat discussion, and perhaps a few other things, including JC, some of its members, and Stanley Ouch. I've had a few minor problems with Mr. Ricci, but I do think he's really a good guy. He just doesn't have time (or doesn't wish to devote much time) to the bbs portion of AAJ, and that has caused him to be a bit less than understanding and helpful in solving bbs problems. My experiences with Lois (who had turned me off somewhat by 1999 or 2000, when I began to spend less time at JC) were similar, but I think she has less common sense than Ricci or our Mr. Alfredson. If there's a mass exodous from JC (and I'm not saying I'm wishing for that), I hope we'll see more of Ron Thorne, Jimmy Cantiello, Steve Minkin (? is he still around?), Larry Nagel (?), and of course, steve thelil (goes without saying).

  8. They finally have seen the light, although after their respective performances in the WC, I know it seems like an odd time. I've been thinking about Zidane a bit, and what I don't quite understand is... why has it taken this long for him to make a public statement? I would have thought that a forthright person who wants to clear the air and explain his position could easily have done it within 24 hours after the incident. 48 would have been plenty, it seems to me. The delay only makes it look like "planning" a statement is more important than honesty and directness. At any rate, I still admire Zidane a great deal, and wish the best for him and his future legacy.

  14. My favorite Sarah Vaughan albums are the ones with sparse accompaniment. "After Hours" (Roulette) with just guitar & bass "Sassy Swings the Tivoli" (Mercury) with trio - she's in amazing voice on this one Those are two of my favorites as well, and I'm practically a Sarah completeist. I generally prefer the small group stuff, but if I had to pick one track from her entire career (not a practical or sensible thing to do ), it would be an orchestral track- "I'll Never Be The Same", from "The Lonely Hours" (Roulette), reissued on CD as part of "The Benny Carter Sessions" (along with The Explosive Side Of Sarah Vaughan"). I don't even have to play it anymore... I can just play it in my head, and the hair on the back of my neck stands on end.
  15. I'm with you, John, except that it's still not really clear/certain that video was used. It seems more likely than not, though (especially since even Lippi apparently agreed with Domenech). Someone with some integrity and some balls needs to come forward in the next day or so, and explain this shit. Sweep it under the rug, and things will only get worse. [edit]... and if necessary, someone with integrity and balls (and some influence) should come forward and challenge somebody (within FIFA) to explain.

  17. I not only looked at it again, I studied it. I even slowed down the slow motion replays, and saw it from all angles. I see it the same way I saw it when the game aired. Yes, Materazzi's left foot touched Malouda's right foot. Barely. Malouda dove (sold it to the ref), in my opinion. A rare occasion where I agreed with the ABC analysts (Balboa and Wynalda). I've read various worldwide news stories online, and the circumstances surrounding Zidane's red are still rather confusing, to say the least. There seem to be a variety of opinions as to which official first saw the head butt, and whether they saw it live or on video replay. The site with the least amount of info (or even conjecture) about the incident? The same site where I had hoped to find more definitive info- the official FIFA site. Maybe it's out of respect to a great player to avoid too much mention of the whole thing. I was just hoping to get some closure on that. If anybody has a link to a good, reliable source, feel free to share.

  20. Brad, I hear you, my friend. Too bad it had to end that way.
  21. Let's see... what was that old baseball adage... "If you're not cheating, you're not trying"? But I (and from previous comments here, I'd say WE) agree with that, Dan. There need to be more cards for diving- in the box or otherwise. I can understand why some people would find football/soccer boring. Like any sport, you kind of have to spend some time with it, get to know it, in order to really appreciate it. It's not always about scoring, although I've admitted that as a former offensive player, I do like to see good attacking and good goals. Anyway, I know this sport won't be for everybody.
