  3. Thanks for posting that, Tom. I've seen it before, but I hadn't saved it. I had another site saved for Mercury discogs, and that one no longer comes up (I think this one you posted might be the same one, at a new location).
  4. The Cole set is one that I was going to ask about in terms of a complete discography (there are several older sets where I have most of the data in my database, but not complete discographies from the Mosaic site). Nobody else seems to find it convenient to copy and paste here, so I haven't popped the question(s). Anyway, I do have quite a bit of data for the Cole set: Partial Discography (taken from an online Oscar Moore discog): THE KING COLE TRIO : Nat "King" Cole-p-v / Oscar Moore-g / Johnny Miller-b New 5. I can't pick just one, but in addition to GO, I think my personal favorites are OUR MAN IN PARIS, DEXTER CALLING, and GETTIN' AROUND.
  6. I was still hoping for an alternate board skin. B-) I recently downloaded a newer browser for my Mac, but the board still appears in these glorious pastel colors...
  7. One advantage of recording LP's onto minidisc instead of CDR is that you can index the tracks whenever you want to (after the recording is made). With my stand-alone CD burner, I have to monitor the recording and hit an indexing button after each track. If an OOP LP I've recorded on MD comes out on CD, I can easily erase that LP from the MD and reuse the disc space. I don't know the average size of an MP3 player, but my portable MD fits easily into a shirt pocket for walks and bike rides. How is it "easier" to record onto an iPod than an MD recorder? I don't see how recording an MD (whether from radio, LP, CD, CDR, or cassette at the stereo; or from the computer using a portable) could be any easier.
  8. I've had my Sony MZ-R30 portable since around 1998. I've also had a Sony MDS-JE510 stereo component for several years. In terms of performance and utility, both of these have been nothing less than superb. I'm still using the same rechargeable battery pack for the portable, and it holds a charge far longer than any other rechargeable device I've ever used. Recording with either has been a breeze (I've used the portable to record off the computer). I haven't explored the capabilities of MP3 players, but I wonder if they can do all the things an MD recorder can do (the things that CD recorders- at least the stand-alone type- can not), such as dividing and combining tracks, moving (sorting) tracks, etc. I've always enjoyed the editing capabilities of MD. No doubt you can travel a bit lighter with MP3 players due to their storage capacity, but I've never wanted for more when I've traveled with my MD's. In one of those CD travel cases (that were designed to hold a portable CD player and a few discs), I can get enough MD's for a three week vacation and never listen to the same thing twice. I guess it would be nice to have the capacity of an MP3 player, but then again it would be harder to decide what to listen to!

The single exception I s the first version of "Runnin'" (session F) which appears out of sequence because the CD timing. There are minor defects like the bass buzz toward the end of take two of "Autumn Leaves" (session I), which were in the original source. The edit at 1:12 into take nine of "Scotch and Water (aka Joe's Avenue)" was necessitated by loud eletronic noise that momentarily marred the original recording.

Session notes indicate that a portion of the piano solo from take 3 was edited in. *** The bass solos and four-bar exchanges between the tenor saxophone and drums were edited out of the original issue of "Introducing Wayne Shorter" and all its subsequent LP and CD reissues under that title except FHCY-1014. Although Vee Jay FHCY-1004 claims to contain alternate takes, the only alternate take is "Blues A La Carte". The master take appears for the other three titles. To further complicate matters, the titles of "Blues A La Carte" and "Harry's Last Stand" are flipflopped. All titles except "Pug Nose" (take 2) appear on FHCY-1014, which reverses the master and alternate takes of "Harry's Last Stand", "Down In The Depths" and "Black Diamond". __________________________________________________________________ WAYNE SHORTER - SECOND GENESIS (G) Wayne Shorter (ts), Cedar Walton (p), Bob Cranshaw (b), Art Blakey (d). Web site: www.mosaicrecords.com. PRODUCER'S NOTE This set contains all the sessions led by Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan for Vee Jay as well as the Young Lions sessions that they essentially co-led. They also appeared together on a Wynton Kelly album entitled Kelly Great, which will be included on a forthcoming Mosaic set of Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers sessions for Vee Jay. Because the music from these sessions has been issued in so many different ways, we elected to present the music in the strict chronological order in which it was recorded. With master improvisers like Morgan and Shorter, this approach is especially enlightening. It also puts into perspective the issued alternate takes, some of which have performance flaws in the melodies and arrangements. With the exception of three performances from "Here's Lee Morgan" and six from "Introducing Wayne Shorter", the masters for this set were transferred from the original session tapes. The shifting of the drum placement at the piano solo during the first take of "Blues A La Carte" (session E) was done by the engineer at the original session. The overload distortion on the drum solo in the first take of "Black Diamond" (E) is also in the original tape. The occasional trumpet distortion of sessions C & D, especially on the master take of "Expoobident" (D), occurred in the original recording process.

Producer's note: This set collects the Pacific Jazz studio recordings by Bud Shank between 1956 and 1961, which focus essentially on his mid-fifties quartet with Claude Williamson and early-sixties quintet with Carmell Jones and Dennis Budimir. Although his collaborations with Laurindo Almeida and Bob Cooper attained more attention and success at the time, this overlooked body of work captures one of the West Coast's finest reedmen at his best. No master tape has survived for Tangerine (B) and Misty Eyes (E). These selections were dubbed from LP pressings. As with any project that involves Pacific Jazz, there are tapes that are in less than first class condition. There will be sound flaws springled thoughout the set, such as the drop outs and slight phasing at certain points during Tertia (B). Where these occur, they are unavoidable and irrepairable.

    Eddie Bonnemere

I was looking for something in the Prestige discography today, and noticed the following (anybody ever heard it?): Eddie Bonnemere Sextet Eddie Bonnemere (p) Kenny Burrell (g) Joe Scott (b) George Brown (d) Moncel (bgo, cga) Jimmy Coloway (tim) VGS, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, September 10, 1964 Oriental Mambo -PR 7354 Why Run Away? - East of the Sun - Ankle Bells Night Song - Man in the Raincoat - * Jazz Oriented / Eddie Bonnemere (PR 7354) Eddie Bonnemere Sextet Eddie Bonnemere (p) Kenny Burrell (g) Joe Scott (b) George Brown (d) Moncel (bgo, cga) Jimmy Coloway (tim) VGS, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, September 21, 1964 Mr. Lucky -PR 7354 When I Fall in Love - Mountain High Valley Low - Lotus Land - Calm Beauty - Theme from a Boy Ten Feet Tall - * Jazz Oriented / Eddie Bonnemere (PR 7354) Fantasy never reissued this, afaik. Bonnemere also had a couple of LP's under his leadership on Roost, neither of which I've ever heard...
  15. Well, I think Fischer would have to be the one to say what is "accurate". I don't see how there's any arguing with that. That doesn't mean that I think it's the only way to play it, of course. B-) Here's an interesting page: http://archive.keyboardonline.com/master/c...her/index.shtml
  16. Mike, after I posted the question, I had the same thought in the back of my mind. I can't recall now either. I have my collection databased, but can't find anything to clear this up. "Mark 1" is also on Burrell's recent BLUE MUSE CD, but that's not it, obviously...
  17. No, I don't have any fake book version, actually. My changes are just my interpretation, not really based on any one version. I'm sure Mr. Fischer would probably not approve. If I was going to try to learn an "accurate" version (and if I played piano instead of guitar, AND if I had more reading/writing skill), I would definitely try to emulate Fischer on that Shank date for PJ (the original recording, afaik). My brother and I had an e-mail exchange about this tune awhile back, and he gave me some ideas which I haven't fully explored yet. There's also a reference to the fact that Fischer objected (I think) to the Hubbard / Blakey (?) changes: I went back to the Clare Fischer web link and took another look at the "turnaround" with the controversial changes. Actually it isn't what I would call a turnaround, but measures 9-12 where you call out Gmaj7b5 etc. The boppish version goes G6,9,+11 (which I like; the +11 is the same as the b5 so it is essentially your chord) then two-fives at F#-B and E-A; this would lead naturally to Dmaj7, as in your change, but they show another two-five at D-G. The alternative approach shows Gmaj7 (clearly a mistake), then Dmaj, then Em, then Em/D. The Dmaj could be a Gmaj7b5 with the root dropped to F#. So the root movement goes from G to F# to E to D, then to C# for the final passage, while the harmony is basically Gmaj Dmaj Em. I don't care for the two five at D-G. I like either Gmaj7b5 - Dmaj/F# - Em7 - Em/D, or Gmaj7b5 - F#m7 - B9 - Em7 - A9 - Dmaj7. The voicing I'm playing for Dmaj/F# sounds like Am; the Em/D sounds like Gmaj. I also like Amaj7 - Bbdim in place of C#m7 - F#7b9, although either one works fine. Again, FWIW. He and I tend to hear things similarly, but sometimes not...
  18. I edited my post above to indicate that those opening chords are in the key of G, not D. I always play it in G flat. Besides the Jack Wilson version on RAMBLIN' (Vault / Fresh Sound), I also have it on: Bill Evans- The Complete Fantasy Recordings- Fantasy Ed Bickert- Bye Bye Baby- Concord Heiner Franz- A Window To The Soul- Jardis Marian McPartland- Live At Yoshi's Nitespot- Concord Marian McPartland- Live At Shanghai Jazz- Concord Art Blakey- Free For All- Blue Note Bud Shank- Bossa Nova Years- Ubatuqui (Pacific Jazz) J.T. Meirelles e Os Copa 5- O Novo Som- Dubas Various Artists- FORMA / A Grande Musica Brasileira- Polygram (Luiz Carlos Vinhas, pianist)
  19. Ah yes. One of my favorite tunes! The chords (in G) in the opening are Gmaj7 and G#7-5. I had a feeling the apostrophes were indications of octave changes. Is it just me, or did you forget one on that last "D"? I've been in the habit of going: D F# A A F# A F#' F#' D' E' G' E' G This is how Bud Shank and Fischer did it on Pacific Jazz (the most "colorful" version I've ever heard, although I love Jack Wilson's version too). FWIMBW, this is what I have on file: PENSATIVA (Clare Fischer) F#maj7 G7b5 F#maj7 G7b5 llll llll llll llll F#maj7 Eb7#9 Dmaj9 G#7 llll llll llll llll Gmaj7b5 F#m7 B7 Em7 A7 Dm7 G7 (or Am7/Am6) llll ll ll ll ll ll ll 1. G#m7 C#7b9 F#maj7 C#m7 / C#m6 llll llll llll llll Bridge: Cmaj7 Am7 Dm7 G7 llll llll llll llll Dm7 G7 Cmaj7 Cmaj7 llll llll llll llll C#m7 F#7b9 Bm7 E#7b9 llll llll llll llll Amaj7 G7+5 Dm7 G7 llll llll llll llll
  20. BW, I'm trying to get a handle on this, but I'm not hearing anything recognizable yet. Being that I'm an ear player, you're probably more advanced than I am in terms of notation and theory, so please bear with me. Is this the melody line: F# A A F# D' F#' F#' D E' G' E' G What does an apostrophe indicate?
  21. I have the Dexter and I've seen the Getz. I might have been tempted to look for more if they didn't look so damned cheesy. They couldn't even spring for a photo of the artists on the cover. And why do videos so often not have the same kind of basic discographical info on the packaging that CD's have?
  22. Forgot to mention... I don't follow you here, Mike. Which two tunes are you comparing- "Mark l" and... ?
  23. I agree 1000%. A great session. This has always been among the first things by KB that I recommend. Another overlooked gem, and from the same era, is MOTEN SWING (Columbia sessions, formerly titled BLUESIN' AROUND). 'ROUND MIDNIGHT was a good solid session, with plenty of Burrell lyricism and a nice dose of swing here and there. KB sounded great- he had developed that big sound by that time (using 18" guitars), and was probably at the peak of his powers. Nice selection of tunes, too. The only negative (for me) that brings it down a notch is that an electric piano was used (on 5 of 7 tracks, the other two being a g-b-d trio and a solo guitar piece). Joe Sample and Paul Humphrey replace Wyands and McBrowne on the title track, BTW.
  24. George Shearing
  25. Hmm... there was already a Steeplechase boxed set, "The Complete Trio & Quartet Studio Recordings, 1974-1976". A complete Steeplechase box would be HUGE (there are close to 30 Dexter albums on Steeplechase now, and there are still a few more previously unissued CD's of live material yet to come).
