  1. Speaking of Schoenberg, the fire has done some damage: https://www.ludwig-van.com/main/2025/01/13/schoenberg-archive-incinerated-historic-blaze/
  2. Yes. Right now I am listening to the Boulez piece, Le Marteau Sans Maître
  3. Composer, conductor, polemicist and iconoclast Pierre Boulez was born 100 years ago and, on his death in 2016, left classical music utterly changed. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2025/jan/08/pierre-boulez-centenary--he-jolted-us-out-of-our-comfort-zone-antonio-pappano-martyn-brabbins-and-more-on-the-composer
  4. I believe several people on this forum have lived in Austin, TX. They might remember Waterloo Records - here is some recent news: https://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2025-01-03/waterloo-records-owner-john-kunz-saves-his-42-year-old-baby-by-selling-it/
  5. For those who have not yet seen this blog: Charles Mingus’ final public appearance took place on June 18, 1978 when he was invited to participate in the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Newport Jazz Festival that took place on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., organized by President Jimmy Carter’s office and George Wein, the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival. https://www.charlesmingus.com/blog/farewell-president-jimmy-carter?ss_source=sscampaigns&ss_campaign_id=677ca01e5990f33c21180de7&ss_email_id=677caae6a0cdf81e577e54cf&ss_campaign_name=Farewell+Jimmy+Carter%2C+Mingus+anniversary%2C+shows%2C+festival&ss_campaign_sent_date=2025-01-07T04%3A18%3A09Z
  6. It is located outside the venue where Gallagher played regularly throughout the Troubles in Northern Ireland. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ced8jpdevjeo
  7. Mahler's Symphony No. 3 in D minor, Fourth Movement, here is one performance:
  8. Speaking of Spotify, here is Rick Wakeman's view of Spotify (he uses a more colorful word):
  9. A wax cylinder containing the oldest recorded country song was discovered in Pennsylvania. The track 'Thompson's Old Gray Mule' was recorded in 1891 and sung by Louis Vasnier, a black man from New Orleans. https://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p0kcmb16/listen-to-the-earliest-known-country-song-ever-recorded
  10. Speaking of the Velvet Underground, here is what a 5-year old taught a cartoonist about the VU: https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2024-12-27/op-comic-navied-mahdavian-velvet-underground
  11. Gato Barbieri's "Tupac Amaru"
  12. Even if not a fan of the Rolling Stones, I would still thank the band for letting me hear a Sonny Rollins solo while shopping at a grocery store. Yes, sometimes "Waiting for a Friend" is the background music in the grocery store I go to. When I hear the song begin, I stop in some aisle (maybe the aisle with the toothpaste) and wait for the solo.
  13. Herbie Flowers (1938-2024):
  14. A passenger in a plane helped ease the pain of the other passengers when they were stuck waiting on a delayed flight He took out his saxophone and performed a few tunes. 15. Probably the first time I heard Zakir Hussain was in George Harrison's Living in the Material World, maybe 50 years ago. At that time, I had no idea who Zakir Hussain was, but as years went by I became a fan.
  16. Happy to see Alex Acuña remembered on this forum. The Peruvian government has still not given him any recognition. Here he is giving a quick merengue lesson.
  17. "The sitar is quite painful": https://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p0k6r1mv/explore-anoushka-shankar-s-genre-defying-style
  18. A Robert Fripp guitar solo, starting at around 1:25
  19. ...They inspired two popstars – The Boom Town Rats’ Bob Geldof and Ultravox’s Midge Ure – to write the charity single Do They Know It’s Christmas? It was hastily recorded by the super-group Band Aid. But the lyrics did not paint a full picture of the famine. They recycled many of the old colonial tropes of Africa as a barren land requiring western salvation... Geldof: “Colonial tropes” my arse. https://theconversation.com/band-aid-at-40-how-the-problematic-christmas-hit-changed-the-charity-sector-241649

    Nicky Hopkins

He helped shape classic songs by the Rolling Stones, the Who and the Beatles but his influence on music has been largely ignored…In some cases, he didn’t get proper financial compensation either. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/nov/06/nicky-hopkins-pianist-rolling-stones-who-beatles
  21. Lena Horne's "Push de Button" - found a used inexpensive copy
  22. Yes, Klaus Kinski was not someone you messed with. Still, I recommend the 1982 movie that Werner Herzog made with Klaus Kinski: Fitzcarraldo. The documentary Burden of Dreams (about how Fitzcarraldo was made) is also good.
  23. The US Postal Service will probably release a stamp commemorating Quincy Jones in a few years.
  24. I am not a fan of "Greatest 50 or 100 or whatever" lists. Nevertheless, here is one on salsa: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/best-salsa-albums-1235139298/la-33-la-33-2004-1235139611/?fbclid=IwY2xjawGSQaBleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHYFL9fe8YwzJddvXggy5kSkoprkaqq6PNBzFXEyQgeS3nQb9F4MWDAUNuA_aem_5ft-TmYZYacxgFw2mYPc0A
