  1. One of the most discussed crossover artists between classical music and jazz in the last fifteen years ... do a search ...
  2. Wes Montgomery's alternate takes from the Milestone years - he was one of those artists who took a different approach each time. Agree heartily on the Prez takes mentioned above !
  3. Happy Birthday, once more!
  4. The many Candid dates marred by the piano at Nola's were the first to come to my mind, too

    The Who

For me the Who died when Keith Moon died.
  7. ... looks even better in red. Now how about the transparent cloth version ...
  8. Agreed on all levels. Other forums have strict rules like this, and I don't think it will inhibit the liveliness of this place in any way.
  9. In the nay - ight, ooh baby in the night .....
  10. Yeah, that's my favourite, too - didn't ya read my post above?
  11. Yes, che was on the active users list just before I posted this, and what shall I make of the fact that the newest registered member (no posts yet) calls himself Fidel .....
  12. It's all over my personal bar and bookmarks in Opera - maybe you have to change your automatic refreshment settings?
  13. No need for refreshing - my personal bar in Opera displayed the neat little Org icon all by itself! Thanks Jim! One minor qualm - could you remove the white edges around the circle? If look at the favicon on a dark background you will see what I mean.
  14. A friend of mine simply uses Windows 98 and a coorespndingly old version of WinOnCD - no problems with burning copy controlled CDs of any kind.

    Herbie Hancock

The varied personnel on this make me think it is a collection of leftovers and abandoned projects. There is one track - Shiftless Suffle - by the Headhunters band with Harvey Mason, an absolute killer track! A shame it wasn't added to the Headhunters CD as a bonus track. There is an early live bootleg of the band with that track.

Basically I like Dis Is Da Drum and Future 2 Future, only that the drum machine beats kill any rhythmic subtleties in the music. I'd wish for an alternate version without them - the Hip Hop audience sure wouldn't buy this, however.
  17. King Ubu, royal ambassador for Swiss Jazz!
  18. Herbie himself expressed extreme dissatisfaction with this session, that he had no idea about funk at that time. Cuscuna released that one track with his consent, strictly for historical reasons. I seriously doubt this will ever be released in complete form - if so, the Herbie Blue Note box would have been the place.
  19. McCoy Tyner's Tender Moments is one example where I regret selling my 1970's German stereo LP before comparing with the CD reissue. Both the first CD and the recent RVG sound worse than this LP. Tape deterioaration may play a part in many a case, the ones you mention seem to me like tape stretch at the beginning of the reel. Cuscuna has reported one instance where they had to edit on the beginning of a different take, so bad was the stretch.
  20. I saw Juan Marcos Gonzalez' orchestra live a year or two after the movie was out, and was disappointed, as it was a rather conservative approach towards Cuban casino style dance music. The classic tunes he played sounded like routine jobs - check out Arsenio Rodriguez' original version of Dundumbanza! - available on a Tumbao CD. Most modern bands sound cold compared to the groove of Arsenio! Recently saw Cachaito's band on TV, again nothing innovative, but excellent descarga stylings. Their conga player Minguel Anga Diaz has a new disc coming up on World Circuit - I was sent a review copy. This disc is much more representative of modern Cuban stylings. For an example how lively this Cuban big band style already sounded in the 1960's, try a Palladium CD titled "Tumbao Cubano" - Juan Marcos Gonzalez hasn't added one note to this music.
  21. Yes, that was Atlantic SD 2-905, recorded in London. The first official release of that group. Re-mixed, edited and sequenced by Michael Cuscuna ...

    PM Records...

like i said, that is the one PM album i have and it is one of my favorites. i was looking for more music in this vein. I'm afraid this is one of a kind - the closest is found on the Mosaic Blue Note Elvin, but with horns and percussion added.

    Herbie Hancock

Didn't remember there were such big differences between the edits and the Sleeping Giant mix - will have to ask that old friend if he still has the LP. I remember reading about the US Warner box set in down beat. I wasn't aware there was a single from the Mandishi tracks before you mentioned it - the Bruyninckx disco doesn't list it - same with the Spook soundtrack.

    PM Records...

The first Stone Alliance is a raw thing, just Grossman, Perla, and Alias (overdubbing congas on some tracks), and representative of how they sounded live. Jim Sangreys description of Grossman squealing is accurate, but I have to admit I like it much better when he does it than with anybody else ... The nest two are collaborations with Brazilian or Argentinian musicians, and IMHO are masterpieces in Latin fusion music. Nice tunes, energetic joyful playing - I wouldn't part with these under any circumstances. The one with Marcio Montarroyos invloves some overdubbing, but it stays organic. The fourth is closer to a standard fusion album than anything they did, but still nice. Kenny Kirkland is on it. Saw that band live, too. The Grossman LPs are very raw, but I dig em - the Jeremy Steig LPs with Hammer, Perla and Alias are the closest comparison, but, as Jim said, with a totally gonzo (positive, to me) tenor player. Their sound quality is not so great, so MP3s would do in this case. The Open Sky LPs are free form, sometimes lacking a bit of direction, to these ears. That Doug Riley album is a minor gem, IMHO. And PM promoted Ed Bickert and Don Thompson - I think I had all of their albums at one point.
