one of my favorite bbc 3 podcasts for more decades than i can remember has been choral evensong. a choral and spoken contemplation of the night to come is somehow essential to the jumbled brain of this hardened atheist. the local nearby episcopal church (descended from the church of england) has monthly evensong worship services. last sunday, on their lawn, blessed by splendid weather, was a beautiful jazz evensong service, of mostly duke ellington music, with readings, responses, choir, vocal soloist, alto, tenor, piano bass, and drums, followed by a generous picnic on the lawn. the priest is a daily exercise buddy, whose wife blows a mean alto and son sports a new degree in jazz performance from UK. he, knowing of my feelings toward religion, the priest never mentions religion to me; i never mention it to him. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006tp7r

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/19/red-wings-arena-new-mike-illitch_n_3467092.html "Looks like the Detroit Red Wings are really going to leave their riverfront digs for a new downtown Detroit arena. The city's Downtown Development Authority announced a plan and approved a memorandum of understanding to build a new home for the Original Six hockey club, owned by Olympia Entertainment founder, pizza magnate and Detroit Tigers owner Mike Ilitch. The 18,000-seat arena will pack 650,000 square feet of total event center space north of Comerica Park and Ford Field, in the area long rumored to be eyed for a new hockey stadium."

http://www.sacbee.com/2013/07/26/5593674/the-beer-run-what-to-look-for.html "Moments before sitting down at home to write this, I popped open a beer – the deliciously malty Coloma Brown by American River Brewing Co. in Rancho Cordova – and poured it into a tall glass, admiring the toffee-colored foam as it climbed to the rim. It made me think: This beer experience would be much better shared. Yes, beer is social. It's inclusive. Men and women share it, analyze it, celebrate it. And yet it's not necessarily easy finding reliable beer drinking companions. So I've come up with a list of appealing – and not so appealing – traits of a beer-drinking buddy. The fast-food company confirmed to Mashable that the series of odd and confusing tweets that were sent out over the course of an hour on Sunday were not the work of a hacker, but actually a publicity stunt attempting to garner buzz for the company's 20th anniversary campaign."

grand central station, another historic marvel still standing. well worth the read, plus an interesting podcast by the author. http://johnbatchelorshow.com/podcasts/2013/02/27/fourth-hour "A rich, illustrated - and entertaining -- history of the iconic Grand Central Terminal, from one of New York City's favorite writers, just in time to celebrate the train station's 100th fabulous anniversary. In the winter of 1913, Grand Central Station was officially opened and immediately became one of the most beautiful and recognizable Manhattan landmarks. In this celebration of the one hundred year old terminal, Sam Roberts of The New York Times looks back at Grand Central's conception, amazing history, and the far-reaching cultural effects of the station that continues to amaze tourists and shuttle busy commuters."

Now, New York is finally trying to rectify its mistakes: the city council has given MSG 10 years to vacate the premises. The Madison Square Garden Company's 50-year permit to operate the arena expired earlier this year, but it has been lobbying hard for a renewal in perpetuity, sending the likes of Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, and Spike Lee to argue the case for staying. But the city has granted only a 10-year permit, after which the Garden will be knocked down for the redevelopment of Penn Station."

"And I think the model has a good chance of working. Some of our free web streams of performances at Smalls have had ten thousand views in a night. Often it’s four to ten thousand. So we think that we could really generate a lot of business worldwide, which could translate to more revenue for us to pay bills and some more revenue for musicians whose music is popular. It would even incentivize musicians to try to get more traffic to our site and to their music, which would also help build our site." Spike
