  1. welcome, OLD FRIEND!
  2. it depends on which realm the master currently resides.
  3. wkcr will be airing its customary tribute until midnight eastern time http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/
  4. wkcr is now playing some of their frank lowe quintet archives. i dont know about you, but i have never heard any frank lowe that wasnt worth hearing. www.wkcr.org/
  5. one of the things that i need to hear before i pass is a pipe organ (and vocal) arrangement of the symphony of sorrowful songs. how a vocalist could compete with a massive pipe organ would appear to present severe difficulties, however. i presume it is considered a neoclassical piece, so please forgive if offtopic.
  6. (we see these kind of stories every year. they become routine, and well worn, or are they) http://www.lvrj.com/sports/58001277.html "It was 8:53 a.m. when we began talking. He told me he had broken off with his employees. They had gone down an express elevator to the ground level, and he had gone back to get some personal effects. For whatever reason, he just went back. "His (office) was on the 78th floor of the South Tower. It was part sky lobby and the rest offices. We were talking on the phone, and he looked out the window, and saw Flight 175 make that left-hand bank turn on line with his office. "He said, 'Oh my God, Andrew, here comes another plane. I love you. Take care of the family.' "That was it. The next thing I heard was the roar of the motors and windows shattering. "Then the phone went dead. "Pretty shitty thing, huh?" Imagine that being the final conversation with your father. The roar of the motors and windows shattering. The phone goes dead. Imagine that horror. Andrew Levine lived it, and to this day can't get past it. He never completely will. Since that moment he has sort of wandered through life, searching for answers that will never come and for a path that might lead him to some sense of normalcy beyond the day America was attacked and his father murdered. "I don't know how you even approach the idea of processing something like it," he said. "Sometimes the brain will just not let you forget. There is no closure. I've gone for a lot of help. I would love to get past it and to be better and better each year. ............................................
  7. this milk stout, conceived by british settlers in ceylon(sri lanka) near the end of the 1800s, is both a tribute to mankind's love of beer, and excellence in beer, judged from any perspective. it was made with great difficulty in the mountains under difficult conditions. the first things that come to mind, with a lion in hand, are timeless, understated balance and excellence, and the passion of some exported brits for needing a beer they love. miles, files de kiliminjaro, the balance and perfection of those few magnificently balanced understated sides with herbie on piano, or maybe captain beefheart, come to mind. if you love extraordinary dark beers, balance, and fine music, seek out lion stout. you will be much the richer. STAY AWAY FROM THE LION DARK STOUT. IT'S FROM A DIFFERENT BREWERY AND IT SUCKS.
  8. thanks. i will check out the senns. the portapros are definitely clunky.
  9. thanks. i'll be at the 'stop.'
  10. jazz times has resumed publication a new issue is out enright is the new editor 75th anniversary edition is planned. lovano is on the cover. of course, the contributors arent paid.
  11. i'm very sorry to learn that. this is this my favorite "o" thread, and at once one of the most decadent.
  12. and i, an old english spirit, lost in the new world.
  13. The ruin is a tin mine - you find these dotted all over parts of Cornwall. Normally thought of as a rural idyll, Cornwall was actually one of our earliest large-scale industrial areas. The island is St Michael's Mount near Penzance which was, indeed, founded by monks from Mont St. Michel, a (not so) short boat ride away! Enjoyed those NY shots - it is such a photogenic city. Must go back! Love the cow too...I hate to think how many 'cows in a field' photos I've taken. Can't resist! we may be birds of a feather. just bettin' you dig elgar(especially gerontius and the cello concerto), delius, and finzi, too.
  14. koss portapro headphones these early 1980's headphones absolutely unchanged (about $30 including shipping, from amazon) are awesome sounding. to my ears, you wont find better for $150. mine sound great, and they have a free replacement warranty, no questions asked. send koss 6 bucks for shipping, and get a new pair. if style isnt your thing, and sound is, and, like me, you dont have that much money, do your ears a great favor. true, they arent closed ear, but you'll love them, very likely. i bought another set, just in case i lose this pair. (bluelake, wkcr, and kbcs replays sound awesome on the pod). after about 3 hours of the very slightly overemphasized bass, i've had enough. that's about my listening limit. they fold neatly into their little bag/case for travel. they blow my sony earbuds away.
  15. ...havent hungered for steaks or burgers lately. ............................ must be getting old.
  16. lauren reminds me of that awesome beezboll term, "over but low".
  17. that was helpful. thanks for taking the time, and for the clarification. have you moved? i dont recall seeing 'florida'?
  18. when i heard or read ' on the' ....................musical instrument, a musician sitting or reclining on their instrument comes to mind, a funny picture indeed. isnt 'at the' or something else more accurate and appropriate?
  19. glad you caught them. i was thinking the same thing.
  20. there were no commercial billie-basie recordings that i know of.
  21. kcr now and for next several hours playing basie broadcasts from the mid 40s with billie and jimmy.
  22. i relistened to the entire midnight-3am bloc on my walk/run today, editting out the very few promos, of course. that was pure heaven. thanks for the jessica, too. she has softened her touch a great deal.
  23. an awesomeshow . its already on my ipod, and will be for quite some time. if i owned only early lester, early bean in europe, and 30's billie, i would never thirst for music.
